I never ever have seen anything like this in any Hearts of Iron games ever. And it is very likely, I will never see such thing again.

I do not know how many torpedoes WW2 submarines carried, especially the Japanese. But it is surely nowhere near to sink 58 convoi ships. And since both sides are locked in combat, Admiral Tadashigo Daigo will eventually sink the entire convoi. I have also no idea what the US were doing with 800+ liberty ships in one single convoi.

This literally screams for a "Strange screenshot"-thread for HoI IV. ;D

I am left speechless. This battle lasted 4 months. The AI did nothing to prevent it - their Pacific fleet sat the entire time in San Francisco. Tadashige Daigo was promoted to Grand Admiral of the Combined Fleet after the battle. With a skill of 9 that is a given.

And when they ran out of ammo I imagine they started boarding ships and taking them over with whatever pistols and katanas they were carrying. :p

I guess that would be rather time-consuming against anything beyond a single ship ;)

Might be necessary to add some sort of escape mechanism depending on the size of the fleets, something that allows transports to scatter and have at least parts of the fleet removing themself from battle if the enemy couldn't possibly take on the entire fleet. It's not like every ship stops its engine and waits until it's its turn to get sunk :p

What would bother me is that I don't think that the USA would have that many transports in the stockpile. So where does the AI get them?

Much craziness! There's definitely room to improve how commerce warfare works in HoI4 :). On strange screenshot threads, there's one here, and the final shot I think more than qualifies :).

Make it so engagements are broken after a certain point based on fleet size and makeup in order to simulate ammunition depletion? As a simple example: a sub is worth 1 tick (unspecified time) and a battleship is worth 4 ticks, so a fleet of two subs and one battleship will disengage after 6 ticks? Perhaps ending after the largest fleet runs out of ticks.

Some kind of ammunition store and having individual ships break off when down to 5 per cent or so of ammo would be my preferred approach, but I'm not sure if that kind of thing would be bad for the engine (although, given there aren't too many concurrent naval battles happening at once, it shouldn't be too bad, but it's easy for me to say if I don't have to code it :)).

I wasn't suggesting ammunition storage exactly, more as a simple way to to prevent situations like these. 'Ammunition' would replenish after an engagement is broken. Though naval supply does sound interesting, albeit complex. Are there any instances of ships actually running out of ammunition during World War Two to he point where they could no longer fight?
