Given that the next patch/DLC is going to focus on (amoung other things) disease and medicine, it would not surprise me if the wounded trait got a few new events/mechanics.
It should in this case give some new modifier, like "Infection", and not the common illness, that would make it extra deadly as they could then make the infection different from the illness, and you could get both at the same time.
