I was just wondering how many of you would be pro-3D. It is very likely that HOI3 will be 3D like EU3, and it's obvious HOI3 would be better off 2D like it is now, which in my opinion would be an enhancement if it stayed 2D.

The 3D interface of EU3 is in my opinion a clunky, not pretty, waste of memory.
My hope is that enough of an uproar could be made here to entice PI not to go 3D with HOI3.

P.S. I would like HOI3 to come with a resolution selection built in.

P.S.S. why can't I form a poll?

I think that some people miss entirely the point on all the 3D issue. The game is made with a 3D map, because they want to get it across producers. They don't aim to sell this game to that über-Crysis-hardcore-gamer with the latest Alienware rig (well, of course, if he buys the game, PI won't have a problem with that).

They make a 3D map because, this way, producers see the game and they say "Hey, a rather modern game, we can put it on the shelves", and once the game is on those shelves, any pal can come, see it, and decide if it's worth his money. In other words, 3D is a condition by producers, commercial centers, and so on; all those despicable people who thinks that appearance is far more important than what's inside. Normal people, they call theirselves. :p

And there is also, the need to make a 3D map because in a certain way, it's a better way to focus CPU in tasks like AI, game logic and so on.

I think 2D would be better and way nicer than 3D, and with all the recent multi-core CPUs, I suppose that raw computing power will not be a problem anymore, but until all these 3D games fashion dies we'll still see 3D games made by Paradox.

umm... this just too precious and hard to pass by.
:D

I have had my Alienware 4 core CPU (or four-headed dragon) for nearly two years now, (with three 3 21inch monitors) religiously running HOI2_1.3a heavily modded.

But I am wondering about that, über-Crysis-hardcore-gamer feeling... I will not ask close friends or family as they would side with you on that description.

However, I distinctly vote, 2-D. Layered opac so you can see political and terrain for instance at the same time.

Er, and a fully 'moddale map'. Still 2-D however.

But if I do not get it, I'll understand that 'normal' people still abound.

I'm not opposed to 3D by any means, I just don't think what happened with EU3 was beneficial. Yeah, it's 3D - nominally - but the map has essentially the exact same functionality as the EU2 2D map. If they'd combined it with provinceless combat/movement, or made it into a geospherical map then all that 3D effort might have been justified.

Vector based 2D would be nice but i dunno if vector-based game engines are available on the market or to be used under license...

If an HoI with 2D works fine, why must we make it slower only for unuseful 3D graphics? I player EUIII and I hate the 3D graphics that it have and his zoom. I love zoom in HoI2, but it would be better with mouse-wheel utility.

2D, please!!!!

well, does it really matter?? :p

If you're hardcore strategy gamer you shouldn't care about 2D/3D. All I care is playability, good AI, gamebalance, nice (realistic?) economic model, tech tree and so on. Therefore I don't know why ppl whine about 3D. It doesn't really matter how the game looks as long as it has 'the touch'.

Well said, thats why I think we should have... Both!

A 3D map by default to help Bless people new to Grand Strategy and ease them into this kind of gameplay. And a "2D map" button switch that will make us hardcore veterans more happy as we don't have to watch the 3d rendering eat all our precious little hardware that we want to use for running Extreemly fast mode to test our newest ahistorical ideas :p.

Doenst have to be much harder than the "use counters" button we already got in HoI2. After all its only about getting a topdown snapshot of the 3d map and some conversion of the unit sprites. If the 2d mode only have counters It would be even easier to implement. And counters give it a more realistic strategic map feel.

One mode for the common of the shelf buyer, and one for the strategists. Everyone happy? ^^

I honestly can't see what would make it cost so much more to develop...

Im not saying that there should be a parallel development with equal resources on 2D & 3D. I doubt counters for HoI2 took as much effort to develop as the animated sprites did, Yet both made it in to carter for both these demands.

The map is already there since there must be a texture for the 3d map.

The units either can be made entirely of counters for the 2d mode, and that wouldnt require much extra work at all. Or they could be sprites that are captured "images" of the 3d models in motion. Don't think that option would be overly complicated either the stuff is already there...

About coding, uhm no idea but cant see any major problems really since its a provinced based game. Things are either in a province or they are not. Thats not gonna change even if its 2D or 3D.
Might take some time to code the transition to work in an ongoing game, but even thats not a required feature.

I would think that the simplest possible 2D mode with counters could easily be thrown together in a single work month by a guy that know what he is doing. Testing, debugging and all included.

So 4000€ to pay for his extra work and other stuff like tax. Even if HoI3 only sell 10'000 copies worldwide thats an extra cost of 0.4€ per copy :S And Im pretty sure that EUIII sold more that that ;)

Im not that involved in the bussiness but from my viewpoint Implementing a simple optional 2D mapmode would be a winwin situation. Im fairly sure everyone in this thread wouldnt mind an extra 0.4€ to be able to play with a basic 2D mode.

Most that needs doing is already there in HoI2 if not elsewhere, new users will see it as a nice feature even if they all won't use it.

a 2 in 1 solution would be very very nice, but I don't think that will ever happen.

Get your torches and your pitchforks ready, cause I smell a mob attack on PI, if they use the EU3 engine for HOI3.

i love making some aspects more modern but this is so oldskool that it's great and i'm an 2d rebel so don't dare to make this game one of 20 in a dozen!! ( who's got a floorplan of the PI building :p:p )

There will always be 2-D, even when things move on design wise, the best remains and gets better.

Use opac layering for 2-d.

I am all for 3D if it makes the game engine concentrate on game mechanics and not display rendering.

Also as long as Modding the map becomes easier then i am all for it.

EU3 is not that bad once you get used to it. And i am sure that there are a multitude of HOI fans out there willing to do graphics mods for a HOI 3D....

Or is the game titled HOI3DDD..... hmmm might get some lonely guys out there to buy the game thinking it is an adult title. :p
