I was just wondering how many of you would be pro-3D. It is very likely that HOI3 will be 3D like EU3, and it's obvious HOI3 would be better off 2D like it is now, which in my opinion would be an enhancement if it stayed 2D.

The 3D interface of EU3 is in my opinion a clunky, not pretty, waste of memory.
My hope is that enough of an uproar could be made here to entice PI not to go 3D with HOI3.

P.S. I would like HOI3 to come with a resolution selection built in.

P.S.S. why can't I form a poll?

I would like to see 2d graphics that can be smoothly zoomed in and out. Also wrapped around a true sphere (though you would not be able to zoom out far enough to see the edge of the sphere) with accurate day/night and a north and south pole, but not with exaggerated mountains, giant trees, or iconographic cities.

What would be really great is different layers that you can turn on and off or fade the transparency of. There would be two choiced for base layers, a realistic Google Earthesque base, and a strategic beigey coloured map with lines for oceans and rivers and lakes and such. Overtop of these maps you can layer the political borders, the military activities, the weather, the domestic unrest, the partisan levels, the terrain etc etc. The weather should have a small scroll wheel that can move the date ahead to show predicted future weather up to 3 days or so. This would obviously depend on techs and be limited in accuracy and forecast time accordingly.

I like 2D in a WW2 game, because it is like you are a general and you move troops in the operation map that is in your HQ's table. Especially when you play with counters. 3D is not for HoI, map does not have much value in it.

Now that would be a hell of a map, I really like the ability to customize the map layers, and of course the ability to smoothly zoom(I'm sick of using -,and + for zoom, I want to use the mouse wheel damn it!)

It is the 21st century after all

Most players will not buy their game directly from Paradox but in a shop/store somewhere in or near their hometown. The people who run those shops/stores are the ones who have to buy the game, they won't buy a 2D strategy-game.

Just face it, YOU are not the customer to which Paradox will have to sell their game to.

Good point, but you didn't really answer the question at hand, do YOU want a 3D map? honestly? Seeing what EU3's looked like, I would have to say no, it just doesn't look that good, especially considering the cost in performance.

Read my first line :)

3D

Does it mean that I think the 3d graphics in EUIII are good looking ? No, but it is Paradox's first 3d game, so I hope they will improve.

Performance-wise EUIII is better then HoI2DD, people who know something about hardware (I myself don't have a clue about such stuff) say that is because of the 3D engine that lets your graphics card do a lot of the calculations that in HoI your RAM has to do.

2D. I have also read that for EU3, the graphics card memory is supposed to help take the strain of the system because it can do the 3d acceleration, but in practice I have to say that I don't notice it. Most people dont have super computers built soley to render god in 7D 128 bit colour (the best way to view god of course ;)), and for me HOI2 runs much faster. Even end game HOI2 is faster than endgame EU3 for me. (And i have a reasonably good 256mb gc, so its not that)

And yeh, its just not WW2 if its not 2D. Panzer General 1 ftw! The map thing would be cool, because atm north america just looks silly :).

So yeh, 2D ftw.

2D.

However, the only-way-to-sell-games-is-to-make-them-3d argument sadly has some substance. :( Therefore I think the best solution would be that paradox released both. Like today we can play with both counters and 3d units. That way paradox can sell games to the stores and get reviews and all that. But still keep their large and loyal 2D core of players that are so many of here on this forum.

I know that this involves a lot of coding, and I´m glad I dont have to be the one coding it :) But if paradox decides that this is too much. Then I would really love that maps become a moddable part of the game. There are so many players willing to sacrafice oh so many hours to improve the game. Just look at the many mods. DanDaMans proposels seem real good and I would love to see them implemented. But not at the valuble AI coding time.

So please Paradox, give us a 2D map. Or at least the possibility to create one. Thanks.

2D!

I don't know if the "more people will buy 3D for the look" argument is a good one. Compare that ugly EUIII map with other actual 3D strategy games. For people who really care about fancy graphics that's rather a reason to not buy EUIII.

That version would cost quite alot more then...

yeah i know that :(

More coding == more money == more :(

Code:
if graphics == '2d':
[INDENT]rewievs = 'no'[/INDENT]
elif graphics == '3d':
[INDENT]fangroup = 'sad'[/INDENT]
elif graphics == '2d and 3d':
[INDENT]game_price = game_price * much_more[/INDENT]
else: ## ?? Posibility ??
It was a attempt at a compromise. One to satisfy both the loyal fanbase who loves the millitary style map ( like me ) and the 3d needs. But i suppose that might not be possible without driving the price too high, although personly i doubt i will buy HoI3 with EU III style graphics. I love the realistic "'youre the general" feel that 2d gives.

Btw has paradox decided on it yet?
