A few moments ago, as a fairly bored Vicky player, I was attempting to choose a country to play with, but under fairly unconventional conditions and attempting an odd goal. I thought it'd be a good idea to play as Switzerland, but then what? Do the old fashioned "small country CONQUEROR OF EUROPE" thing? Nah, I've done it too many times. Attempt to industrialize it to the max? Nah, too little population. How about doing so through immigration? Nope, POPs would be very hard to assimilate, and the pie charts would look ugly... Europeans like to emigrate out of the continent, either way... Wait.

Then, I had a pretty odd thought. What if I went to province.csv, and made European territories... American ones (change from "Europe" to "America")? If such worked, then POPs would assimilate easier, and I'd get more immigrants! A bizarre thing to do, so to say.

But, of course, I'm concerned about potential problems that doing this could bring. I can't really think of any, but surely there must be some...?

Hence, I ask you nice folks whether if doing this would work without any problems.

I have to say that I had never thought of that. :eek:o
How do you remove the European barriers to immigration? Remove Europe! :p
Now you can get Chinese immigrants as Switzerland.

I actually don't see any potential problems with it. Just make a backup Province file, as per normal. ;)

Good news, the game loaded alright with the change. I also did some party editing so to make Switzerland more immigrant friendly. Now, onto the game. Let's see how it goes. :D

Oh, and more good news: I've made it to 1846, purchased Lombardia and most of Venetia from Austria, got some reforms done and a Liberal party into power... and now Switzerland is an immigrant magnet! There are at least 3K POPs coming to live in the mostly neutral country every month. :)

I'm also creating some unemployed Italian POPs so they can move to the Alps and be assimilated.

So now we know that... should someone wish to change the hardcoded immigration bonus, and make it more of a level playing field, they would just have to change the province.csv file.

This is such a simple thing, I'm surprised no1 mentioned it before (maybe they have??). What is it that you have changed then?? the bit where it says about regions?? Or continents?? Or what??

Another interesting question is would this affect colonization? If the game thinks Switzerland is in America, would you be able to make American colonies States from the get go, rather than wating for Swiss POPs to turn up, as would be the normal route?

You change the continent part.

So, if you want to turn all European provinces into American ones, go to "Edit" -> "Replace With" (that's if you're on Notepad) and then write ;Europe; on the first line and ;America; on the second one. Do not forget the semi colons, though, else you'll also change the name of some regions and that might screw up a number of events.

I just confirmed this. I neville'd Bahamas from Britain, and it was already a state, although none of the British Caribbean provinces were anywhere close to having a British majority.

Ehm, a short update. I got distracted and let the Conservatives (whom has Residence as a policy) win the elections, and my immigration flow went to zero. I managed to get the Liberals back into power a year later... but now I'm getting close to no immigration, and I've got no clue why's that.

My plurality is at 100%, the ruling party is Liberal and has Full Citizenship + Pluralism, I've got spare RGO and factory slots, a precious metal RGO (recently purchased Slovenia) and no debts... I really have no clue why no one wants to come to Switzerland.

Perhaps if people wished to remove that hardcoded immigration bonus then they could change all Americas to say, Oceania?? I suggest Oceania as I don't believe there is an immigration bonus here, and there aren't many nations/provinces here that would be affected by the ability to grant statehood. Moreover, if Americas were changed to Europe, European nations can grant statehood all over the Americas; if Americas became Africa, then American countries will get an advantage in Africa. Oceania only has 2 countries (IIRC) in basic revolutions -Australia and New Zealand. They are unlikely to colonize the Americas, as American countries are unlikely to colonize them (the powerhouse of the UK has them to begin with!).

These are just suggestions for any would-be modders interested out there.

There are very few "available" colonies in America (that's if you play VIP), so it's not a major concern to "share the same continent". It's another story if you play Vanilla, as much of Canada is still up for grabs...

And the idea of removing the immigration bonus is interesting - I thought about doing it with Europe so to also drastically reduce assimilation, too.
