This would be incredibly cool. Not sure how many people actually know what spelljammer is though, it is after all 27 years old.
Don't think it would matter. All you need to know that it's basically D&D in space. I'm sure even people who hadn't heard of it before could still become interested based on that.
And even for the people who don't care about D&D: It's half Treasure Planet logic of galleons in space and half a bunch of phlogiston that was mostly just an excuse to have crossovers of every fantasy trope the GM would allow.

you would have to do so many ship models, which could be rather challenging. Portraits should be easy enough.

The jewelled spheres probably makes it impossible? Like, each solar system is in it's own universe contained within a rigid frame?

Each solar system in Stellaris appears to be an independent miniature map anyway, represented on the larger map by a point. Is that so different to the spheres? Besides, Spelljammer is pretty liberal with its fluff.
You can't just fly out of them, you'd have to sail to the edge of the solar system, them fly through the right hole to get to the solar system you're going to. So no FTL that you can inside a solar system? but also no travelling in space outside of solar systems?. As an abstraction, in the setting the spheres are in movement so you'd also have to wait for alignment but that wouldn't work.
Basically it's just, solar system to solar system, never being outside of a solar system?
Hyperlanes would be the mechanic.
Mostly I'm just bumping this because Spelljammer is awesome and hopefully some crazed modder will take it on.
