I picked up FTM last night, without applying the patch.. (have to do so about this game). I was looking forward to the apparently better use of cores (explained in one developer article I believe), as I run a quad core 2.3Mhz with a large (but can't remember) amount of RAM, but by 1939 my PC turned into a hairdryer just like SF and before I could save and exit it crashed. Early days yet, but all I can say so far it that you have more thingies on the screen and it feels smooth to traverse the map, but I fear you might be have to endure the usual poor QA these games go through. Early days yet though.

I am confused, why would you not apply the patch? We fixed some crash issues in some of the FTM patches. definitely run 3.05 to get the best experience. Performance is also even better in later patches and there are hundreds of fixes and balance problems sorted after community feedback

Patch it. Run the required steps in tech support for improving your overall systems performance. My system is very significantly worse than what you've stated and it runs the game perfectly even during the war.

So I read the DD. I think I will still try a game sans FTM. I think it would be much more enjoyable to be able to reduce my own neutrality instead of relying on trying to increase the threat of a nation 3,000 miles away.

You could also increase another threat/country nearby and alingn yourself to the allies(Diplo action) Thus the Axis nations(alligned more to them) are more "threatening" you..

Thanks to the UK I was already moving towards the allies pretty quickly. I don't know how much effect it had.

Too quick off the blocks is the answer there. Am installing patch as I type, so will get a chance to try it again shortly.

Well, I have to admit that I am very disappointed to find out that all of the Asian/American events from HOI2 were left out of this game. :(

Don't get your hopes up, usually the naval battles are fun but in the end its just a matter of stomping a few ants on an island(garrison brigades /lol). Its really dependent on alot of things though. The second things start happening at random from january 1st 1936 the game can really go any way. Your pacific war depends ALOT on China putting up a good strong fight hammering away at Japanese MP while the UK has some sort of fleet to divide japan in 2 for you. I've had some trully epic pacific wars but my most fun navy games have always been as japan fighting the UK with a close second being the US fighting Italy around the boot.

USN vs RM isn't a challenge unless the Italian naval bombers get involved. Navy to navy in the Atlantic or under a strong fighter umbrella, the RM is no challenge. The IJN is supposed to be the challenge for the USN. If they can't provide it, then the RN might have to.

I'm just relaying my observations of the years of me playing the game in all its versions. AI's are not players.
I agree. That is why I need the best possible Jap ai. I cannot do mp anymore. I agree mp is 100% better than sp. The current vagaries of life prevent me from indulging in mp now though.

Meh, its pretty easy to find a friend or two who are willing to play the game like one plays chess. A few moves every now and then. Its really dependent on finding avid fans of MP who are willing to do it.
