If a wormhole factions wants to move a fleet from system A to system B, do you have to specify which wormhole stations open the wormholes and then point your fleet at the wormhole? Or is it automated - just click in another system and the game figures out a system of wormhole stations to use and your fleet moves accordingly? Or can you do both?

I imagine the first option can become... quite repetitive in large empires.

It's obviously automated. You click on another system with your fleet selected and the fleet will head to the closest wormhole station available and jump. If the voyage spans various systems, then the fleet will simply head to each system's wormhole independently.

Wormholes are two-way. They can send wormholes from their home system to the external system and fleets can be returned through those. Instantaneous communication is assumed, probable quantum entanglement whatever, so your fleet just "calls in" a wormhole to take them home.

Another pertinent question: Can wormhole factions build wormhole stations in an ally's systems? Otherwise there would be situations where they can't even help their neighboring ally attack an enemy on their side, or maybe not even help defend them from assault if it's done to distant systems.

Overall, it seems very difficult for wormhole factions to move far afield to battle away from their systems. How will this work, will they need to build wormhole stations along the way? How long will this take?

The silly solution I'm thinking of involves pushing wormhole stations through wormholes, then activating them and crawling along that way...

Wormholes are mainly drives for defensive & tall empires.
Still, I would like to see some streams using them to see how they work.

I see it as the ultimate offensive weapon - open up a gateway anywhere. F things up. While the enemy fleet is scrambling towards to the attacked position, you pack your things and leave, attack another world in your enemy's empire. Rinse and repeat. You need a much smaller navy because you can be everywhere at once. Kinda like Mot Infantry vs. normal Infantry.

What if your front wormhole can only reach 30% of their systems?

What if the enemy is on the opposite of your ally and you can't even reach them?

But that station does not need in the same system as the fleet, so you can use the same station to return once it recharged. Or they use a different station in range to open the wormhole.

Federations share techs for ships - so I assume that if at least one member has wormhole tech then the federation fleet can use wormholes. I wonder if the federation tech sharing also allows the federation president to build wormhole tech?

I do recall one of the devs in a video saying that currently allies cannot share wormhole networks but that it was something they were discussing.

Where did you get this information from, because I've heard so many people claim this and I'm dead sure it's wrong. I've heard from devs directly atleast 30 times that stations opens 2-way wormholes that lasts for a short time. Exactly how short is unclear so that gives me a few questions.

  • Can 1 wormhole be used to both send a fleet home and bring one back if they are both in position. Say you've scouted with you military fleet and deemed it safe and now you're going to move back your military fleet and send a science vessel.
  • if you jump to a system and instantly see an enemy fleet and want to retreat do you have a short moment to decide to do that.

  • Can you send your ships to systems outside the nearest stations range (aslong as it's in your entire networks range). For example if I've conquered half the galaxy and I want to send 1 fleet from one side to the other, can I do it with one command or do I have to send it manually every jump. And if the first does it have a user friendly interface to overview it.
    Example: If you select the fleet in system A and hover the mouse over system E would the game automatically calculate a path and draw up something like this that shows which path it would take and maybe how many days it would take.

I would guess that the stations can be upgraded and increased in range. The limited range around the station is a tradeoff you make for getting instanteneous travel to any point you like. If you can't reach your allies "other side", then it sucks to be them, gotta hold out untill your reaserch greater range and upgrade your stations. Alternatively, they should allow you to colonise a world that they can't inhabit / build an outpost in a worthless system on their other side. It's a tactical tradeoff you get for hyper defensiveness and ultimate aggressive hit and run strategies enabled if you DO have the range

Something I'm curious about is whether or not a race with wormhole ftl will start with a wormhole station in their home system or will the player need to build it. I'd assume they'd start with one so they can explore the surrounding systems straight away like the other two types of ftl can.

It has been confirmed that you start with one and do not need to build you first one.

Its no wonder they recommend 'advanced' players for the wormhole FTL. Its got great advantages and some worry disadvantages. If i remember correctly you wormhole in and out from the edge of a system, so you are still vulnerable to defenses even though you may have a larger range you can 'worm' to. That does not help when you are trying to get a large fleet somewhere. Its very much a D-Day scenario with the exception being the beach where you are landing is rather small. Perhaps as you upgrade the wormhole stations you increase the amount of ships you can put through in a shorter amount of time, along with increasing its range.

I am rather excited to try it. You will have superior ships but an overall smaller fleet. Expansion seems more internal rather than external and as someone mentioned, focused more on defense as it will be easier to wormhole into your own systems rather than an enemies, but with great opportunity to do some behind the lines assualts. Another factor for it being more defensive is that wormhole stations must be protected at all cost or else your fleets will be stranded.

Well, can vassals and protectorates who have wormhole as their FTL at least borrow your wormhole stations to actually assist you in times of war? If not, it seems like their fleets might easily be stuck in the backwaters of your empire.
