28 February 1933

... Several people were found alive inside the burning Reichstag building yesterday. These people have been initially identified by police as NSDAP members Joseph Goebbels (a publicity officer in the NSDAP), and two lower members of the NSDAP's SA forces. Also a Dutch communist called Van Der Lubbe was found bound nearby. Police believe that this may have been an attempt to discredit communist groups which went drastically wrong. The election is expected to go ahead on the 5th of March...

1 March 1933

... President Hindenburg yesterday signed a "Decree for the Protection of People and State" which removed Adolf Hitler from the position of Chancellor and forbade NSDAP members from taking part in the elections this March. Leading NSDAP officials are subject to arrest...

3 March 1933

... The rioting in Munich has been blamed on Nationalist groups in the area. The main group behind this appears to be the NSDAP under the leadership of the former Chancellor Adolf Hitler. Hitler is the subject of an arrest warrant issued by police following the fire at the Reichstag last week. So far the death toll for the rioting stands at 105 and is expected to rise until order is restored...

6 March 1933

... Yesterdays election results have been released with votes being distributed as follows:-

Communist Party of Germany (KPD) - 181
Social Democratic Party of Germany (SDP) - 265
Centre Party - 91
German National People's Party - 57
German People's Party - 7
German State Party - 16
Bavarian People's Party - 21
Other Parties - 9

It is believed that the SDP will attempt to form a coalition with the Centre party in order to form a government...

9 March 1933
... The SDP announced that it will form a government with the KPD yesterday...

12 March 1933
... Renewed rioting in the various parts of the country threatens to result in all out civil war in Germany. Nationalist groups are demanding the removal of the Communists from government or they will be removed by force. Government officials declared that they were elected fairly and that they would not surrender to terrorist demands...

16 March 1933
... Nationalist groups throughout Germany yesterday started openly arming. Police clashed with these militias in Nuremberg late last night...

19 March 1933
... French forces yesterday moved into the Rhineland in "an attempt to restore order in the critical industrial heartland of Germany". Some believe that this is actually nothing more then an attempt to conquer German territory. So far government officials are not provoking the French government over this issue...

This AAR is based around an alternate chain of events starting at the Reichstag Fire. The communists gained power in the German government and outlawed the nationalist parties. Nationalist groups then led an uprising against the leftist government and created a state of civil war in Germany. French troops then moved into the Rhineland to protect the industrial region (in reality out of fear of a potential spread of the uprising into Alsace-Lorraine).

By 1936 the Rhineland has become a puppet state of the French government and the civil war in Germany has led into two completely seperate states, a nationalist Germanic State and a leftist Weimar Republic. The civil war is still going on between the two groups, the Germanic state being backed by Austria and Italy, and the Weimar Republic is backed by the Soviet Union (however, neither is involved in an alliance and none of the other states are involved directly in the war).

*Note* this AAR will use a modded version of HOI2 1.3b and not Doomsday. I would appreciate any feed back anyone wishes to give as this is my first AAR.

After almost 3 years of civil war the nation of Germany has been wracked by fighting. Only the North-Eastern area has remained relatively free of violence. Borders have changed several times with one side gaining the upper hand and then the other. At the start of 1936, however, for the first time the outcome of the war no longer seemed in doubt. The Weimar Republic now outnumbered the rebels in key areas, and the defeat of the rebel pocket around Bremen was just weeks away. Unfortunately, the German people were beginning to loose their will to fight and it seemed that if there was no decisive conclusion soon then there would be trouble getting enough people to support the government.

The layout of borders at the end of December 1935

The plan drawn up at the end of 1935 called for an offensive from Kiel and Lubeck to occur no later then the 5th of January 1936 to take Bremen and Hannover. At the same time, divisions from Kassel and Gottingen would attack south. After this first phase was complete, units in the North along with divisions from Munster would defeat the remaining rebels in the area while units in the south would combine to take Dresden

The plan of Operation Swiftsure

Now the only thing to do was to wait for the right time to launch the attack.

*Note* at the current time both the Germanic State and the Weimar Republic are using the same flag. This will be changed soon so the pictures should become less confusing. Many appologies.

Lifeless - At the moment I'm just worried about ending the war with the Germanic state. I know that I can win in the NW easily but the S might be hard. Later I might go for the Rhineland except it's part of the allies (in this game the axis is taken by Austria at the moment, Commintern is the usual, and the allies are normal but with the Rhineland included). Also, the German nations are weaker then usual (I felt that airports and aa guns might not have been built to the same level. Also there is no westwall).

Ayeshteni - To be honest, I'm using the DDR for Weimar Germany (Me) and the DFR ministers for the Rhineland.

Thank you. I chose this idea because I felt that it was fairly realistic because of the recent view that van der Lubbe could have been set up by the Nazi's (this isn't proven but is possible). Also, I felt that a Communist victory would have been violently opposed in Germany such as with the Alsace Soviet Republic and the Bavarian Soviet Republic.

That right time came on January the 2nd at 8am. The first moves succeded in taking the provinces of Schweinfurt, Hannover and Bremen. The rebel forces at Erfurt were now surrounded by the loyalists and it was only a matter of hours before the rebels were destroyed, the survivors melting back into the general populace. At the same time rebel forces succeeded in defeating the loyalist militia defending Munster.

At this time the first armoured corps was created, consisting of two corps of MS-3 tanks built under licence from the USSR. These obsolete tanks were a Soviet version of the French Renault FT-17 and had limited use in the modern era.

These tanks were involved in phase two of the assault which began on the 13th. The first armoured corps was used in a large attack on Dresden which saw them coming up against the first rebel tank division (made up of FT-17's and British Whippet tankette's). The rebel forces at Dresden succeeded in defending Dresden from the loyalists even though the loyalists made large inroads. Loyalists did successfully retake Munster, however, eventhough the rebels had been armed with modern weapons by Austria. Within 2 weeks the forces at Dresden were defeated through superior numbers.

In the final phase of the assault, Nuremburg withstood the combined forces of 8 infantry divisions and 2 armoured divisions while the rebels in the North were finally completely defeated. With the additional 5 infantry divisions from the north moving to Dresden it seemed that the civil war was almost over.

As a response to the successful campaign against the rebels, the USSR began sending some much needed Oil to the Weimar Republic in return for electricity. This also turned out to be the start of continued improving relations between the USSR and the Weimar Republic.

On other news, the USA began preperations for war, possibly directed towardsthe Weimar Republic. As a result, two new divisions of infantry were set to begin training.

With the civil war almost over there was a sense of joy throughout the loyalist regions. However, this was to be short lived.

On the 27th of January the rebel forces began a major offensive to retake Dresden with forces increasingly equiped by Austria and Italy. In fear of a second Great War, Britain and France called on all parties to agree to a cease-fire. On the 28th Austria and Italy confirmed that they would back a cease fire as long as Dresden was returned to the rebel forces. Under a great deal of presure the Weimar Republic agreed to an 18 month cease fire with the rebels on the 29th.

On the 30th of January the rebels formed a seperate Germanic State in the former territory of Bavaria. The newly formed state immediately embarked on a program of relations with Italy and Austria. The success of the rebels also inspired other groups to begin uprisings in various nations, such as the successful revolt in Paraguay and the failed revolt in Japan.

The nations of Germany at the start of February

With the civil war over, the Weimar Republic now began to look towards its long term survival. The armaments minister (Willi Stoph) was replaced with Albert Kuntz, the minister of security (Karl Steinhoff) was replaced with Wilhelm Kulz and the head of intelligence (Wilhelm Zaisser) with Ernst Wollweber. All of the new ministers were commited to increasing the industrial capacity of the republic. The first step of this program was the construction of a new factory complex in Berlin, which began at the start of February.

The program of rearmament which was begun near the end of the war now saw the completion of 2 modern infantry divisions and a flottila of destroyers. Unfortunately the destroyers were forced to remain in drydock due to the destruction of the major ports in the civil war.

At the start of April, several other nations began to increase diplomatic relations with the Weimar Republic. This started quite suprisingly with an envoy sent by Japan (a rather right wing nation). At the same time another right wing nation was expanding its empire, Ethiopia was finally annexed by Italy expanding their holdings in East Africa. Also Nationalist China began to expand its holdings through a war against the Guangxi Clique.

Rumours began to spread in the middle of June about secret talks taking place between the Germanic State and Austria. The Weimar Republic was naturally fearful of a renewed war and set about reinforcing its forces along the southern border.

In both of the last two pics they were 10 divs of my troops. The second picture was taken before they redeployed to Berlin. Don't worry, in the next update they'll have a different flag to make things easier to understand. Also, both sides are mainly 1918 of militia infantry with just a few 36 infantry.

Oh, and I'll try to use the other link for the pictures next time to see if that helps.

Next update should be up tomorrow.

With the spread of the communists into Germany now secured, many nearby nations were becoming wary. This was shown throughout the world with individual nations increasing their research and defence budgets. It was this environment that allowed the final failure of the Versailles Treaty. On the 16th of June 1936, Austria and the Germanic State declared that from now on they would follow a joint economic and defence policy. The Germanic State was from now on a subsidiary of Austria following their new Anschluss. While they would enjoy some automony they would forever bow to Austria's overall plan for the future.

The border of the new union of Austria and the Germanic State

Following new research the Weimar Republic began construction of a division of Tankette's. These units would be almost twice as fast as the existing tank divisions (which moved at approximately the same rate as the infantry divisions) and would hopefully become the spearhead in any future war. Unfortunately, they were still far behind the technology level of any other state in the region except the Rhineland Free State and the Germanic State.

On the 1st of July the world finally saw some more good news for communism. The Communist and Nationalist factions in China came to a cease-fire, with the Nationalists recognising the Communists for the first time. This would allow the out numbered communists valuable time to reorganise their troops. For the first time in over 5 years there was peace in the world, unfortunately this was not to last.

The failing situation in Spain would come to a head on the 18th of July when a group of highly nationalistic people, disapointed with recent election results (which saw left wing parties doing well), decided to overthrow the rightful ruling government and set up their own. Although they managed to take Madrid, the government managed to flee before they were captured and set about organising a counter attack.

An overview of Spain and its colonies at the start of the civil war.

Other countries waited for at least three days before becoming involved, probably waiting to see how successful the coup d'etat would be. On the 21st, Italy decided to send troops and supplies to the Nationalist faction after realising that they would be more likely to be treated favourably by a fellow right wing nation then a left wing one. France however decided that it would not be in its best interests to become involved as long as its forces were required to back up the Rhineland Free State. 2 days later the United Kingdom followed France's example and declared neutrality, probably due to the isolated and vulnerable position of the Rock of Gibraltar. On the 24th the Austrian and Germanic "Axis" backed the Nationalist faction economically and militarily while the Soviet Union began to send supplies to the Republicans. Remembering the violence that Germany suffered in its three year civil war, the Weimar Republic decided to send a large amount of supplies to the Republicans in return for a small amount of desperately needed metal.

In August, violence began to spread once more throughout the Weimar Republic, this time it was the Communists striking against the few remaining capitalists. This violence was a result of the Anshluss of Austria and the Germanic State with people seeing the capitalist nations refusing to lift a finger against the nationalists while they had responded to the legal election of the left by invading Germany's key industrial region.

A poster from the KPD calling for the destruction of the capitalist created Weimar Republic.

The government responded to the violence by following a key part of their philosophy, the introduction of a socialist system of government. On the 23rd of August the Weimar Republics Reichstag and the Reichsrat both voted in favour of the dissolution of the Republic by over 90%. The new state was to be the Deutshe Sowjetisch Sozialistisch Republik, otherwise known as the German SSR.

National Flag of the German SSR

Battle Flag of the German SSR

This new state was formally made a member of the Commintern alliance system on the 25th if August as the fourth member after the USSR, Tannu Tuva and Mongolia.
