While nearly everything seems fine, the naval tech tree appears increasingly nonsensical.
We now have a light cruiser built in 1914 (C-class) and a battleship built in 1936 (Scharnhorst) both being represented as 1922-tech ships.

Battlecruisers :

1922 : Ersatz Yorck (late WW1 paper design)
1936 : Scharnhorst
1940 : O-class

And you can add HMS Hood as UK's 1936 BC

There is no point in BB/BC distiction as separate types, model system can take care of it.

As it is, it cannot.
I agree a single capital ship designing tool could allow to create BCs, BBs and SHBBs. However such a tool would need to allow the player to set different values. For example, choosing the displacement, which would unlock superior levels of armour and firepower while increasing the industrial cost and reducing speed if set high, or limit firepower and armor while decreasing the cost and increasing the speed if set low. Such a system could allow you to design a Yamato, a Richelieu or a Scharnhorst, but would be quite horrible to balance.

The variant system in HoI4 doesn't do that. It gives you a base value that represents the bare minimum of what a 1922 BC or a 1944 BB can be, and from there you can increase Firepower, Speed, Armor and Reliability. You can't reduce one stat to improve another, you can only go upwards from the base level. It's easier to balance, but it means BCs, BBs and SHBBs are different units.

The devs went for the second option : now it's too late to envision another system, the only good out come would be for this second option to result in an accurate tech tree.

And you can add HMS Hood as UK's 1936 BC

Admiral class (of which only Hood was built) fits the 1922 slot better than the older Renown. UK 1936 BC should be, like the 1940 model, a fictional class.

Also, naval tech trees need unique drawings, like the land and air trees.
The naval aspect seems so neglected I can almost smell the 10€ DLC from here.

Bloody Hell, you're right, why is it in CA tree right now, hopefully this is just early gameplay and they won't require a DLC to fix this. If all else fails, there's always mods

That's the Admiral-class, which is (for some reason) a heavy cruiser at the moment.

The Admiral class battlecruisers other than Hood was cancelled, the Courageous class were all converted to carriers, so that only really leaves the Renowns as a "class" to bear the 1922 BC name, although Renown and Repulse were technically Revenge/Royal Sovereign class battleships when they were laid down.

Given there was no mid war Heavy Cruiser class for the British, but the player might well develop one, it needs a name. Admiral class is a reasonable name as the Brits do like to name stuff after previous big naval figures.

Bloody Hell, you're right, why is it in CA tree right now, hopefully this is just early gameplay and they won't require a DLC to fix this. If all else fails, there's always mods

All pre 1936 ships have been simplified to one class with a notional date of 1922. The class name for the British is Renown, presumably because there was Renown, Repulse and Hood. This doesn't mean that HMS Hood will be a 1940 tech Heavy Cruiser because they're called "Admiral Class", she'll be a 1922 tech Battlecruiser, possibly with some variant boxes ticked?

It's a bit messy, but given the design decision to limit designs and tech levels to 1922/1936/1940/1944, there's going to be some mis-labelling of ships.

Is it just me or does the trade system seem a bit stale? "x civilian factories lost --> get whatever resource you like".

This is early game, with resource-rich but industry-poor countries all offering their wares and producing a glut in the markets. Later on, I expect these resources will be much harder to come by, and trade relations / trade bullying will come into play. Personally I think the system looks extremely interesting, but of course it will all come down to how they balance it.

On an entirely unrelated note, I was very happy to see convoy escorts listed on Johan's production screen..

I guess Nelson class will be a heavy improved Queen Elizabeth class (1922 tech battleship). The tech tree may look messy but the developers have said that it is a game they are making not a simulator or history book.

UK did not build a heavy cruiser in the games timeframe as far as I know so they just took some names from other older ship classes and gave them to the UK heavy cruisers. It do look better then calling the heavy cruisers something like Heavy Cruiser II, Heavy Cruiser III and Heavy Cruiser IV.

The more I see of the naval tree, the more it looks phoned in if I'm being frank. I'm hoping they will at least use the model system to try and represent the wildly varying classes that were in existence before 1936. Even a couple more early tech levels would help immensely.
+1

It is, sadly, one of several disappointing aspects to this game I've seen so far. There is a lot to like about HoI IV in terms of interface and improved accessibility compared to HoI III, but I keep seeing things and thinking 'why the hell have they done this?'

First impression on WWW-2:
  • Troy Goodfellow taking over for Jackob, throwing him under the bus throughout the stream. :(
  • Love the Theater Groups concpet. Quick way to head to your generals in the region. As well as a count of home many divisions are there.
  • The green and red arrows on modifying division is a nice UI feature. Clear cut explanation for your actions when modifying a division.
  • Glad to see the trade interface.
  • Not a big fan of the German Naval Bomber tree. The Ar 196 was more ship board recon plain. NOT known as a naval bomber. Should be FW 200. Also the FW 300 art, granted never producted, clearly is wrong due to the description of the design. The art doesnt reflect a plane with 4 engines and a crew of 8. Looks like it was rushed into place IMHO.
  • Not a big fan of the German Support tree as well. Yes the JU 87 in 36' is correct, but the JU 87G in 40'? Cmon, not even close to realistic production timeline. I would stick with the JU87 in 36 and allow the stats modification to simulate a D, R, or G variant of such model. Put in place the HS 129 for the 40 slot.
  • Dont like the Itally AI not covering their borders.
  • There should still be Air Commanders. You have Naval and Ground, no excuse to not have them in game. The only reason I heard was, "No one knows who they are". You can say the same for most Naval commanders. Give us Air Commanders and there bonues to CAS, Air Superiority, Bombing, Escort, etc.
  • I get it, its crunch time. Need to finish the game. But answering a couple questions at the end of the stream would go a long way with the communities need for info.
Questions:
  • Generals select for Military staff, will they be unavailable to the front line?
  • When building all these factories and dockyards, what resources are these taking away from other aspects of the game? What can I not do as well because I am building a ton of factories?
  • Does building LOCATION of units matter?
  • Why are we not seeing any type of Security/Intelligence screen. Espeically during peace time. As far as I can tell, I do not see a tab for it. With all the information, or lack of it, I am going to say its not create OR even close to done. Please confirm status of that feature of the game.

As I understand it, factories and dockyards and other construction is built using whatever civilian factories are not already being used for consumer goods or to purchase resources. So it seems you have a choice of using civilian factories for construction projects or resources to run the military factories.

I don't like that German player changed during game, they have different plans about country development. This may lead to great problems during war time.

There really weren`t any new BCs bult, as fast battleships made them rather obsolete, and huge displacement made cost prohibitive. BB is a ship with balanced armor and speed, BC is a variant with less armor and more speed. It is perfectly fine for a game, since battleships weren`t even major combatants of WW2 navies, being mostly relegated to secondary roles. For WW1, more accurate system wouldn`t hurt, for WW2, the HOI4 variants are perfectly enough. I was under impression you can design 2 separate variants of same ship, can you not?

Chuck me in the, "It's a shame the German player changed" camp. I was interested to see if "Build no tanks until you've researched the Panzer 3" was a viable strategy.
