So it is 1595 in my Burgundy->Netherlands game and I joined the protestant league to try out the new mechanic. For some reason GB got leader over me and decided he'd like to be emperor and declared war.
All good so far, however for some reason, the Ottomans joined the Catholic League, I am not sure why this would happen as the Ottomans aren't even Christian. This caused a giant alliance web to kick in since everyone is able to call in allies whenever they want now that called in the Timurids and a bunch of indian states on the side of Catholic Austria. It even broke the alliance between Lithuania and Poland as Poland joined in on our side and Lithuania on the other. Even Muscovy joined in on this war.

Now it's not that I mind much, I mean, ever since the latest patch, lucky nations cannot roll any general under 2 stars with regular 3 stars which makes em trash anything my allies throw at them but makes them utterly stupid whilst fighting me but it's a bit much when at the start of the war over 1.3 million units have been involved over a Christian fight within the HRE.

Not sure if this is intended by paradox to make it a lot harder to become emperor for nations other than the Netherlands but I'd quite like to know so I can prepare myself next time accordingly(aka, not joing a league and vassalize everyone who lost afterwards)

(Edit: Sorry about dem images. Finally got them to upload properly)

I'm not sure why any Ottoman Sultan right in their minds would ever support HRE Austria... but that war looks epic.

I had a similar war in my Byzantium game.

On the Catholic side, there were :
- Austria (war leader)
- Byzantium (I was called in by France for some reason even though I'm not Catholic)
- France
- Spain
- Commonwealth
- Half of HRE

On the Protestant side there were :
- Hansa (war leader)
- England
- Scandinavia
- Russia (for some reason)
- Hungary
- Half of HRE

It was very big. My main battles were with Russia and Hungary, but it was pretty messed up in the HRE. I white peaced the Hansa when I received call for peace (Catholics were at 80%+ warscore and the war leaders did not want to peace out).

I love it that people with absolutely no idea of history are posting here.

It's not an uncommon point of view. Of course, while the involved countries did spread over six continents, Europe was the one which saw most of the fight, if not all of it, so the global nature of the war is pretty shaky.

The ottomans siding with austria is actually quite funny in itself, maybe it would be appropriate for the calling of allies to be limited to the same religion as the league (and maybe check out the fact that every nation involved seems to become co-belligerent if they can all call their allies in).

You are right, it's quite funny. IRL, they supported the Protestants.

Historically it would be appropriate... but this is totally awesome. Please don't remove it.

The Ottomans intervened in the 30 years war by providing direct support to Gábor Bethlen who was a key figure of the war. Had the Ottomans supported him more, it is conceivable that the 30-years would have ended 25 years earlier with the capitulation of the emperor and Wien being seized by combined Bohemian and Hungarian protestant forces.

The Ottomans siding with Austria makes less sense though, especially if Otto rivaled Austria in-game.

Sounds like this war will be a lot of fun.

The "Catholic" side has about twice the amount of troops. Shouldn't there be a religion check for this? The Ottomans didn't actively take part in it but they did support against Austria and the HRE.

Your problem is that youre seeing the whole mechanic as "Catholics" vs "Protestants". In fact its actually Catholic "cause" vs Protestant "cause".

So if youre Ottomans and your worst rival is Austria, who is the Catholic Emperor, of course you are going to support Protestant cause, because if they win - Austria is no longer the emperor, and you just gave your biggest enemy an epic middle finger.

Its sneaky, its devious, its real life like, and im loving it.

But in this case, Ottomans is supporting the Catholic Austrian side.
