I am a Vicky newbie, and still trying to understand the WM. My question right now is this:

If autotrade is off, will the AI buy for me the goods according to the settings that I have selected, or do I have to go personally to the WM and conduct the transaction manually everytime I want to get them?

Also, if I turn autotrade on, will the AI conduct the trade according to the settings I have specified, or does it buy and sell goods according to it's own calculations?

Thanks in advance.

You will have to do it manually, but it is alot more effective than having the AI do it.

Using Auto trade is a good way to go bankrupt if you're not careful.

All you need to do is turn that off and then occasionally go in there and modify what you want to stockpile or dump onto the world market. Set it to Buy or Sell and the amount of units desired. Click Confirm Trade and you're good to go.

I check mine every few weeks to a month and see if anything drastic has changed and make adjustments if I need to. You can hover your mouse over a commodity and see what you produce/use/need to help you make the decision.

So if I set X product to buy at <50 while autotrade is off, tha AI will buy it automatically??

Yes, if it is available.

The way vicky economics works is the highest rank gets to buy the commodity first. Anything left over the second highest rank gets to buy. This continues to filter down until all available units are sold out. In which case if you are ranked below #3 you may not be able to purchase that item or just sporadically depending on the demand.

You can see the demand by how much is on the market and what its going cost is.

Yes, it will try to maintain your stockpile at 50 by buying the good on the WM if your stockpile falls below 50. There are 2 cases where this WON'T work:

1. There is not enough of the good being sold onto the WM for you to buy. Buying nations are "queued" according to their prestige, so being high in the prestige rankings makes it more likely that you will be able to buy the good (whilst a country with lower prestige than you misses out).

2. You are producing more of the good than you are using (as inputs for your factories, or to build railroads, colonial claim buildings, new factories, forts etc). In this case, because your order is set to BUY, your surplus of the good will not be sold onto the WM and will be added to your stockpile instead (even after your stockpile reaches 50). Your stockpile will grow continually (and can become HUGE) until you change the order to sell.

Well, I'm a total newbee since I'm currently thinking and planning my first GC (should I play to learn rather learn to play? ), but this seems weird to me that you cannot simply specify the amount of stockpile you want, like "sell or buy until 40 Coal"... I hate repetitive and tedious micromanagment  . That's exactly what has made me stop playing EU2 (merchants!  the only one single thing that really sucks in this game IMO) and CK (you said "bride hunting"? :( ). That doesn't look so drastic with Vicky WC though :) .

It’s not too bad. There are a few catches, of course. For example, I put small arms and canned goods at <120. This ensures I’ll always have the goods necessary to build divisions, but because of the standing order, I have to remember to have enough cash on hand to pay for the divisions and restock my supply of goods.

Another gotcha is when you produce an article that’s used by another factory (say, steel->machine parts) you may set steel to sell but end up running short. So watch the items used by other manufactories and ensure you’re producing an excess; if not, buy it even though you’re producing it.

EU's merchants are tedious.

Well, Vicky has lots of management. Much of it you might call micromanagement. However, there is so much to manage that it seems that you are always micromanaging something different. Plus, there's always something to do...so it never gets boring...but tedious...yes. A problem even for a heavily addicted player, I fear.

AutoSend? Oh my! Have you played difficult games in EU2 without going banckrupt??

Well, I'll not insist since that's a bit out of topic here...

I'm not absolutely against micro-management, provided it's not a mindless repetitive task like checking every two minutes the very same page of your ledger just to see where you can find an empty space to send your bloody merchants after they've been kicked out.

I can bear micromanagement if only that involves political/strategic choices, if you see what I mean. I can't tell for Vickie yet, since I'm at the very beginning of what seems to be quite a rude learning-curve...

You'll probably find that most of the micromanagement involves strategic choices, but realizing that you're short of steel because you haven't looked at the ledger at just the right time can be somewhat annoying.
