Henrique---> I think the fact that Cabral in 1500 sent one ship back to Portugal is prove enough that Portugal did´nt know about Brasil. Because if they knew, they would definatly have told Cabral, who was going on this long and difficult journy.
Maybe some of their seacaptains knew about this continent, but i dont think the rulers of Portugal knew about it.
The Tortillas treaty was made so far west to protect their interest in India more effectively.
Anyways,i guess this is something the historicans will never be sure on.

About the falkland Islands:
This islands were first colonized by the french in 1764, but the islands were given to Spain in 1770. The spanish abonded the colony the same year, and the british colonized it in 1832.

When I read your message, about Malvinas, this makes me remember that I have learned that in school once. The Malouines were first colonized by the French, in fact the inhabitants of St-Malo, a very important port in Britanny that participated actively to the french exploration in the classical age. Malouines, the original name means the women of St-Malo. Malvinas is only the spanish translation.

About what you say on the Tordesillas treaty and the Cabral discovery, just have a look at my message earlier. I think the only thing we can say is that nothing can be decided yet with certainty.

Venice was a cultural, financial empire first and forth most but also strong millitary. Many famous families originated from there (some of their ancestors still today has considerable financial power) Brugge, Medici family, Marco Polo etc etc.

A good game that focuses on this is Merchant Prince by QQP. Don't know if it's purchasable anymore but you can probably find in some abandonware site otherwise.

Sorry I'm getting to these late.

Raphael 30/05/2000 -

You asked about the BG EU. I'd say that Calais and the Antilles were made bigger for game purposes. Not that they suddenly grew bigger, but how could one stack a large army counter on basically a city? So it was probably just for stacking value.

I don't know about the other mistakes

Greven 30/05/2000 -

You talked aobut the Portuguese sending a land expedition to Ethiopia waiting for the ships to round Africa.

This was also to look for Prester John, the mythological Christian emperor whow was to fight and destroy the Muslims and free the Holy Land (thus conveniently allowing for a freer passage through that area to India and the Spice Islands).

Prester John had origianlly been located in Asia, but over the 1300 and 1400's had somehow migrated to Africa.

Re: Coaling Stations

The15th-18th century equivalents were EXTREMELY important in stopping Scurvy. The idea of sea attrition in Eu should represent a large portion of scurvy (as well as getting lost, hitting reefs, storms, etc). Anyway, until about the time of James Cook, Scurvy was still a big killer, though no one knew why. Though they did know that stopping more frequently did reduce the debilitating effects of scurvy.

No luck, Ethiopia is a christian nation, except fo parts of it. It lose contact with the other christians when Islam conquered Egypt; so Ethiopia developped an autonomous church, with some cult differences with Roma and Constantinople, I don't remember which ones. They had new contact with Europe starting in the XVth or XVIth. And I'm not sure now, but I think they've been included back in catholic church.

No, I am afraid not. I think the Ethiopians still have their own Christian church. All the rest is correct, I think. I remember reading a book not a long time ago that stated that Ethiopia was first Jewish, but when Christianity arrived to the country this became the dominant religion. However, the Ethiopian Jews remained in the country until they were all moved to Israel in the early 1990s. To my knowledge, the Ethiopian church still has a strong Jewish (meaning Old Testament) influence in its rites, and no unification with the Roman Catholic Church has taken place.
It is even said that the Ark of the Covenant (familiar to anyone who has seen the Indiana Jones films) is kept in Ethiopia.

By the way, thank you for all the information about the Falklands/Malvinas. I did not know that 'Malvinas' could come from 'Malouinas', although I had a look at the Encyclopaedia at home and it said that the French had established a colony there in the 1760s. Once again, thank you very much to all contributors!

Yes, I believe they are called Coptic Christians. It is an ancient form of Christianity that is interesting because it is so close to the original religion (read: before Christianity was 'polished' by the Catholics and the Orthodox).

Yes, Ethiopia was 'conquered' by Mussolini in the 30's. It was basically the last bit of Africa untaken at that time and Mussolini wanted his piece. Other parts along the coast (Somalia, Eritrea, etc.) had been taken previous to that. The Duce used gas and planes and nearly botched it anyway.
