There's a new video from the kings and generals channel that was sponsored by Paradox/CK3.

It is about the world in 867, one of the start dates!!

Wanted to give everyone a heads-up, as its a great way to get introduced to the world that you are about to dive into in a month or so when the game comes out!!

I am shocked to have learned that Charles the Bald was not bald.
Well yeah but no. The devs (and apparently and surprinsingly a lot of people in the anglo-saxon sphere) decided to favor a certain hypothesis about that nickname...
In France, we have several medieval rulers who were nicknamed "the Bald" because they were lay-abbots or monks before becoming kings/dukes/counts. It's the case for Charles the Bald, who even shaved his head at the beginning of his reign (but not necessarily maintained his baldness) as a sign of respect to the Church, hence the nickname.
At the time it was especially significant because long hair has long been a tradition fro frankish kings.

Maybe it's a mistake in french historiography, but it would be really odd that it wouldn't have been debunked in the past half century. It's more likely that it's an english mistake.

We should also note that "bald" is a Germanic archaism meaning "bold". There are records of men named both Archibald and its Germanic form Erkanbald as far back as the early 10th century. It's quite possible, given the ties the Carolingians had to Germany, that "the Bald" is a moniker referring to his personality or actions. It's odd that I've yet to see a historian raise this possibility, though.

Very unlikely, as the English version of his nickname is not based directly on (or related to) a contemporary Frankish form, but rather a translation by historians of the Latin description calvus, equivalent to the French "le Chauve" and German "der Kahle".

A very nice video; good quality animations combined with usage of the CK III map. Looking forward to the 1066 one.

I'm fascinated by the guy's voice, though - he sounds exactly like a text-to-speech engine, so I'm curious where he's from.

Ah, that would explain it. In that case, my best guess is the "ironic epithet for a hairy man" theory. That, or he went bald in his 40's.

Occam's Razor: he was bald, and Paradox just haven't bothered to make him bald in-game.

Does William the Conqueror actually look like a Norman this time around, or is it another 19th century painting?

he actually was bald in earlier images of the 867 start, so they have apparently intentionally changed it to give him hair. I saw people complaining previously about him being bald

The thing is, it's not only CK3 which depicts him with hair.

In fact, this is the only depiction I've come across that suggests he was ever bald at all.
