Germany 1936. Game Setting Hard / Aggressive.

History of Germany from 1936 to the End.

This is a detailed history of my current game, I thought I’d post it!

The build up to War.

Prologue.

In his book Mein Kampf (1926), Hitler outlined his political goal - to undo the 'injustice' inflicted upon Germany by the Treaty of Versailles and he was well aware that this goal could only be reached through another War.

In 1933 Hitler became the German Chancellor with the help of the former Nationalist Chancellor Von Papen and the agreement of the very old German nationalist president General Feldmarschall von Hindenburg who had been the most famous general of World War I.

Only a few months later Hitler was the Dictator of Germany, he ruled Germany alone and had banned all political parties except his own NSDAP.

By the summer of 1933, the Nazi Party was in complete control of the country.

Hitler solved the economic problems of the early 1930's by having the Reichsbank print money. As the prices were under strict control, the money available ballooned and a bubble economy was the result, a bubble expected to burst in about 1940. Starting in 1933, Hitler began the process of German rearmament and militarization, the state invested heavily in armament, and infrastructure projects such as the Autobahn which also had a military aspect: in case of another two-front-war, it would enable the German military to move columns quickly from one front to the other.

After Nazi power as consolidated, Hitler in 1935 focused on expansion. In 1935 he ordered small units to march into the demilitarized Rhineland and establish a fait accompli. The English were not prepared to react, the French did not want to go alone, Hitler had achieved his aim. Also in 1935 the population of the Saargebiet, hitherto administrated by the French, voted overwhelmingly to rejoin Germany. Germany also reintroduced General Conscription, another violation of the Treaty of Versailles.

This was the beginning of one of the worst times in German and World history. Under the rule of the tyrant Hitler and his followers, millions of people were to lose their lives in war.

German 1933 - 1938
The year is now 1936: We now take up the story.

Hitler had put together, at the end of the previous year, his priorities for his technological research teams for the next year; this was to improve the industrial infrastructure and agricultural output of the nation.

To help achieve this end Hitler appointed a new member to his cabinet Konstantin Hierl replacing Werner Von Blomberg as Armaments Minister. Hitler informed him that his main priority was to increase Industrial Capacity through Industrial research.

Hitler's Cabinet Reshuffle January 1936.

Hitler informed Konstantin Hierl that he had three research teams at his deposal to devote to industrial research. One research team was prioritized to develop new Luftwaffe Fighters and Bombers; he had the resources for one more research team which he would give priorities to after meeting with the leaders of the armed forces.

To build up Germany's strategic reserve of resources Hitler instructed Foreign Minister 'Constantin Von Neurath' to trade surplus energy resources for hard currency, rare materials, oil and metals.

On January 2nd Hitler held a meeting with the leaders of the armed forces, present was Wehrmacht Headquarters (OKW) Chief of Staff 'Ludwig Beck', Luftwaffe Headquarters (OKL) Chief of Staff 'Hermann Goring', Heer Headquarters (OKH) Chief of Staff 'Werner Von Fritsch' and Kreigsmarine Headquarters (OKM) Chief of Staff 'Erich Raeder'

Hitler “Good day gentlemen, Ludwig current status of armed forces please”

Ludwig Beck then proceeded to give the current status of the armed forces.

Hitler “Gentleman at this meeting we will concentrate on the future of the kreigsmarine. The primary enemy of the Kreigsmarine is the Navy of Great Britain; in any future war we must destroy it. The British navy must not and will not be allowed to blockade Germany and starve the people as in the Great War. Erich what plans are being made to increase the strength and ability of the Kreigsmarine?”

Erich Raeder “Mein Führer, both myself and Karl Dönitz have been formulating the concept of ‘Rudeltakik’ Carrier and U-boat group tactics.”

Erich Raeder handed Hitler a folder Stamped 'Top Secret'. Contained in the folder were papers describing in detail the concept of Rudeltakik ('pack/group tactics').

Erich Raeder “The Carrier Rudel” (carrier battle group) “will comprise of a permanent organization of surface ships comprised of a carrier, battleship or two heavy cruisers, four light cruisers and twenty destroyers with supporting ships to keep it supplied with replacement aircraft, fuel, ammunition and supplies whilst at sea. As a permanent organization, the men and ships will serve together and develop a level of expertise and tactics superior to that of any contemporary naval task force. I believe that the Carrier Rudel, when equipped with the latest German Aircraft, especially the BF109 fighters and new 'Stuka' dive bombers that the Luftwaffe have under development, will be a deadly opponent when commanded with skill and daring.”

image0133ji.jpg

image0155lo.jpg

Junkers Ju87 ‘Stuka’ Dive Bomber.
Erich Raeder continued “The U-boat Rudel, 'wolf pack' as Karl Dönitz likes to refer to it, will comprise of ten U-boats, the tactics will be that one or two U-boats will lure the enemy vessels onto the rest of the rudel 'the pack' which will then destroy them. I propose to use the 'wolf packs' to attrite the British Navy, sinking Naval ships should be the priority and attacking convoys should be of secondary importance and then only if the escorting vessels have been sunk. I don't believe that we can afford the 'wolf packs' to suffer the heavy losses as experienced by the U-boats of the Great war, as the British are bound to re-adopt the convoy system in any future war.”

Hitler “I like what I'm hearing, how many of these rudels will you need to sink the British Navy?”

Erich Raeder “Mein Führer, at least four carrier rudels and twenty U-boat rudels, but we need the resources to refine our ideas and build the ships we need.”

Hitler “After we have defeated the British Navy it may be necessary to invade Britain itself. No nation has achieved this since 1066. Every nation that has tried to achieve equality with the British has failed - not because of the lack of will, not because of industrial inferiority, but only because they have failed to destroy the British navy and its power to blockage, we gentleman will achieve this, Erich you will develop a marine corps to lead any invasion and Hermann you will develop a air 'paratrooper' corps to support.”

Both Goring and Raeder nodded there heads in agreement.

Hitler “OK we will release the necessary resources as they become available, a research team will also be allocated to Naval Matters. Werner how is Heinz Guderian progressing with he concept of mobile warfare? ”

image0163wd.jpg

Heinz Guderian
[Heinz Guderian was born in 1888 at Kulm. He was educated in Prussia and in 1908 gained a commission in the German Army. He served as an infantry officer. From 1914 to 1917, Guderian served in Flanders and would have experienced the lack of mobility first hand that existed on the Western Front. He would also have been acutely aware of the carnage that took place on the Western Front. Guderian joined the General Staff and by the end of the war, he had developed a specialized knowledge in motorized transport.

Guderian concentrated his idea on developing a highly mobile mechanized army. He wrote "Actung Panzer" which came to the attention of Hitler. This was Guderian's plan to make war mobile by having a force that was consistently moving forward, never giving the enemy the time to regroup etc. From July 1934, Guderian was given the task by Hitler of perfecting the fighting techniques of the Panzers - light tanks, supported by infantry and planes - which were to become the legendary Blitzkrieg mode of attacking an enemy.

Guderian faced numerous obstacles within the Wehrmacht's hierarchy. He was told that an attack on Belgium and France would falter because of the river systems that flowed through the region. How could tanks cross rivers - especially the wide River Meuse?

Guderian's plan included the use of specialist engineering units that could assemble pontoon bridges quickly that could take the weight of tanks and supporting vehicles. In this way, his Panzer units crossed rivers with ease - and those senior commanders who had failed to support Guderian in the development of his idea, had to admit that they were wrong. A Blitzkrieg attack could also include the use of paratroops]

Werner von Fritsch “Mein Führer, 'Heinz Guderian' is progressing well, we now have three Panzer Divisions which have been training and refining the tactics of mobile warfare, we are eagerly awaiting the new Stuka's, which Heinz refers to as flying artillery, so he can refine the communication links and tactics for close support and cooperation between the Luftwaffe and the Heer. Mein Führer we need to develop better Panzers as the Pzkfw I which equips the panzer divisions is only any good for training, not to fight a war.”

image0193vn.jpg

PzKfw I, equipped with two MG34’s machine guns
Hitler “All in good time Werner, I do not expect to be fighting a war any time soon, we will build better panzers and more panzer division's, as soon as possible. Hermann you have been quit, we are interested to hear your ideas.”

Hermann Goring “Mein Führer, the Luftwaffe should be an independent force, able to attack an enemy ware it hurts strategically, bombing its factories and destroying its infrastructure, thus destroying its ability to wage war, ' bomb them into the stone age, that's what we should do'. We should be building bombers and escort fighters not close support aircraft for the heer, after all they have there own artillery, if there panzers move as fast as they say, then why don't they put there artillery on the back off trucks so it can keep up with there panzers, instead of leaving it pulled by horses or tractors.”

Hitler “No Hermann, the Luftwaffe will concentrate on supporting the Heer, with close support and tactical bombers. When we defeat an enemy we will need there factories and resources to expand our great and mighty nation, but you can develop defence fighters just in case! You never know someone else may take up on your ideas. Thank you gentlemen we will convene again soon, you can then update me on how things are going”

July 24th Spanish Civil War Intervention.

image0208kv.jpg
July 24th, Hitler called a meeting with his Intelligence Minister 'Wilhelm Canaris' to discuss what the likelihood was of Great Britain, France or Russia intervening militarily in the war on the side of the Republicans, if Germany were to intervene militarily on the side of the Nationalists.

Hitler “Wilhem, if we were to intervene to help the Nationalists in the Spanish Civil war, what in your view is going to be the reaction of Great Britain, France and Russia?

Wilhem Canaris “Mein Führer, Great Britain does not have the stomach for a fight and will do nothing bar send a few volunteers to assist the Republicans. The French are stuck with the Maginot syndrome, defence is all they think about, and will do nothing bar complain about Germany having an ally on there southern border. Russia is determined to help, but all they will be able to do is send volunteers and arms and equipment to help the republicans. Stalin has started his purge of the Red Army, he's got a phobia about his Generals, thinks they might stab him in the back or something'.

Canaris continued “Mein Führer no one wants a war and they will do nothing to prevent Germany intervening in the Spanish Civil War.”

Hitler “Good, that's what I wanted to hear, we will be sending forces to help the Nationalists.”

Hitler instructed his Foreign Minister 'Constantin von Neurath’ to inform the Nationalists of his decision.

Hitler then instructed OKW to come up with a plan of intervention in the Spanish civil war, armed forces were to be sent to Spain to help the Nationalists in there struggle against the Republicans, they had 24hrs.

July 25th. OKW, Chief of Staff Ludwig Beck presented the plan to Hitler for his approval. Heersgruppe A, commanded by Field Marshal Von Rundstedt, totaling of eight infantry and three panzer divisions, supported by three Luftwaffe Tactical Bomber Geschwaders, to provide ground support and a Fighter Geschwader to provide air cover, would be sent. The Kreigsmarine would supply two Battle Groups to keep the sea lands open and two transport flotilla's (with one being added later) to transport the Heer Divisions. Ludwig Beck informed Hitter that he was confident that these forces would we enough to guarantee the defeat of the Republican Forces.

I'm guessing that as well, having said that, great AAR. Very good stuff.

Intervention in the Spanish civil war doesn't only give your troops more experience but yourself also. I learnt a lot about using armies in HOI2 during the campaign in Spain I did in my AAR.

Good luck with your AAR.

Hi,

Thanks for the feedback. Glad you like it.

I thought I had posted it in the sub-form, thanks for moving it.

I've already done the Spanish Intervention Campaign I'll post it later Today.

October 6th Guadalajara.
October 9th to 17th. Due to 2 and 3 Panzer Divisions defeat Rundstedt orders a pause in offensive operation's to takes place so he can take stock of the position, reorganize and redeploy his forces. One of the first things Rundstedt does is to order 1. Panzer Division is withdrawn from its exposed position in the province of Albacete and re-deploy to the province of Valencia.

Rundstedt blames the defeat on the poor performance of the Pzkfw I, and the lack of Infantry support for the Panzer Divisions.

Rundstedt convenes a battle field meeting with the commanders of the Panzer Divisions, General Paul Hausser (1. Panzer Division). General Erich von Manstein (2. Panzer Division) and General Heinz Guderian (3. Panzer Division).

Rundstedt “Gentlemen I need to know what in your view is the reason for the defeat in Guadalajara, we need to urgently learn the lessons of defeat and put remedial actions in place. We can not afford another defeat. I can tell you that Hitler is not too pleased at the news of this one. I have assured him that it’s just a temporary set back and that overall things a going well! Heinz!”

General Heinz Guderian “Gert, I believe the main reason for the defeat is the fact that we are supposed to lead an attack with the Pzkfw I which is next to useless, there machine guns are useless against the Republican Russian T26 Panzers. I have ordered our engineers to mount 20mm cannons on some of our panzers, but there’s only a limited number available. We have also captured a number of T26’s which we are putting into service in the Panzer Divisions.”

image0257qr.jpg

Rundstedt “Thank you Heinz, Erich!”

Von Manstein “Gert I agree totally with Heinz, one should also be aware that we rely on the Infantry’s support in the attack especially there Artillery and Anti-Panzer Brigades. Our Panzer Divisions have been equipped with engineering brigades to assist in the speedy advance into enemy territory not engage in prolonged breakthrough battles.”

Rundstedt “Thank you Erich, Paul”

Paul Hausser, “Gert, I totally agree with Heinz and Erich. I would like to add that we are able to defend against Infantry attacks but at Guadalajara we came under attack be the enemies Panzers, which we were hard pressed to defend against having no Artillery or Anti-Panzer Brigades. It is my view that we could have defeated the Republican by now if only we didn’t have to constantly wait for the Infantry to catch up and give us support, we need to make the Infantry more mobile, which I believe is the view of Heinz and Erich.”

Rundstedt “That may be the case Paul and I will put your suggestion’s to OKH, in the mean time we will have to make do with what we’ve got. Do I need to ask OKH for re-enforcements?”

Putting the Captured T26 in Panzer Division service and with the support of the Infantry, they could continue with offensive operations against the Republican forces. Hi Brasidas,

Great to see that you have read my AAR, hope you liked it?

No I didn't know that research bonuses didn't work, but it does not matter, one has to use the best ministers for the Job even if it does not actually have any effect.

I hope to be in a position to post the next gripping installment soon.

Ah, this will make war with the British somewhat easier. It will be less difficult to get supplies and troops to Northern Africa with Gibraltar captured by an ally. Good work.

The Build up continues.

The Campaign in Spain is Over 'Victory' for the Nationalists and Germany.

December 17th. OKW Briefing, 'Victory' in the War in Spain. Nationalist Forces supported by the Forces of Germany have been victorious in there fight against the forces of Republican Spain. Nationalist Spain was now a firm ally of Germanys.

Intelligence briefing Nationalist Spain have Annexed Republican Spain, which is now part of there nation.

Hitler considered the Victory in Spain as a German one and was overjoyed at the news. He instructed the Foreign Office to give Nationalist Spain all the assistance that Germany could, blue prints, materials etc, to improving there infrastructure and armaments industries, in return Germany not only gained an ally but also received blue prints for a Basic Strategic Bomber.

December 20th. Armaments briefing from Konstantin Hierl, New Technology Developed Konrad Zuse has completed his research into Basic Encryption Devices. Hitler realized that due to the problems that the military had in Spain that more research effort should be diverted to the military, Mauser Werke was therefore given the project to develop Basic Infantry Division.

Year 1937.

January 2nd, the last of the Victorious German troops return from Spain to a hero's welcome.

Hitler held a 'Status of the Nation' meeting on January 5th, Present were Foreign Minister 'Constantin von Neurath', Intelligence Minister 'Wilhelm Canaris', Armaments Minister 'Konstantin Hierl', Wehrmacht Headquarters (OKW) Chief of Staff 'Ludwig Beck', Chief of the Luftwaffe 'Hermann Goring', Chief of the Heer 'Werner Von Fritsch' and Chief of the Kreigsmarine 'Erich Raeder'

Hitler, “Gentleman, first I would like to congratulate you all on the Victorious outcome of our intervention in Spain. This Victory will prove to the rest of the world that Germany is once again a nation to be respected. You can now update me on the current status of our Nation; I also would like to hear your views on our armed forces performance in the campaign in Spain. Constantin you will please give an over view of our current Diplomatic relations."

Von Neurath, "Mein Führer, after our 'victorious' intervention in Spain. Nationalist Spain is now a firm ally of Germany, who we are helping as much as we can to improve there Industrial and military infrastructure. Our relations with Russia, France and Great Britain have been damaged, but I'm sure they will get over it! Mein Führer, Hungary are leaning Very closely to our way of thinking and could potentially be an ally, they just need a little more persuading!"

Europe January 1937.

Hitler, "Good, keep up the good work make it clear to Hungary that by joining with Germany there will be great benefits use Spain as an example, Industrial Military and Research assistance will be given to all those who join with Germany. We will pursue our expansion goals in Europe through peaceful means, by persuading our friends in Austria and Czechoslovakia the merits of unification with Germany. Constantin you are to subtly make clear to the other countries in Europe and the rest of the world that Germany pose no military threat and has only peaceful intent. Wilhelm, please present your intelligence briefing"

Wilhelm Canaris, "Mein Führer, there is no significant build up of military forces to oppose Germany"

Canaris handed out documents outlining the current status of armed forces of the major powers.

Hitler, "Thank you! Konstantin your briefing please."

Konstantin Hierl, "Mein Führer, we have been researching heavily in industrial projects and they are now starting to show good results, our project teams are currently researching, Basic Decimetric Radar 'Siemens', Advanced Machine Tools 'I.G. Farben ', Basic Infantry Division 'Mauser Werke', Improved Air Carrier 'Kriegmarinewerft' and Basic Fighter 'Messerschmitt'."

image0104kw.jpg
Industrial Capacity Jan 1937

Hitler, "Thank you! Wilhelm. Ludwig status of the armed forces please!"

Ludwig Beck, "Mein Führer, over the last year our armed forces have grown slowly with the addition of a couple of ships and a few Infantry Divisions. We are currently carrying out major research projects before we expend effort in major expansion, Currently under construction are Two Battleships, One HQ Division, Two Infanterie Divisions, Four Junkers Ju87 'Stuka' Geschwaders, 2 Tactical Bomber Do-17 Geschwaders and Six Garrison Divisions for boarder security, we also have a few Artillery and Engineer Brigades being formed to support our Infanterie Divisions. Mein Führer, we have also finished upgrading our armed forces to the latest equipment, for example our Bomber and Interceptor Geschwaders are now equipped with the Do-17 Bombers and BF109D Interceptors."

image0122sx.jpg
Bf109D Interceptor - Model

Ludwig handed out a model of the BF109D for those present to look at, when Goring got hold of the model he started waving it through the air in imitation dog-fights and making machine gun noises, after a few seconds Goring realized what he was doing and sheepishly placed the model on the Table.

Ludwig Beck continued, "Our Armed forces performed well in the Interdiction Campaign in Spain, the only major problems being the slow deployment of Divisions to Spain and the time it took to tactically deploy divisions in the field, with the exception of the Panzer Divisions. The Panzer Divisions only performed well when supported by the Infantry, this I believe was manly due to the poor performance of the Pzkfw I. The Kreigsmarine only had a couple of minor skirmishes with the Republican Navy, with manger damage to four of our ships, one which had to return to port for repairs ‘KMS Liepzig’, the other three in the last day’s of the war and so returned to base with the rest of the Flotte ‘KMS Deutschland, KMS Admiral Scheer and KMS Emden."

Hitler, "I see, its good the war ended when it did then! Erich your briefing please."

Erich Raeder, "Mein Führer, the Kreigsmarine performed well in the Interdiction Campaign in Spain, with 'KMS Deutschland' being victorious and sinking 'Flotilla Torpederas No 2' of Republican Spain in a significant naval engagement, the rest of the time the Republican Navy hid in Port. They only sent their navy out to fight in the last days of the War even though we were out numbered we still managed to achieve a great Victory. We are a great way in refining the tactics of the Rudel and eagerly await the first of the Battleships, under construction and the Carriers. Once we have finished researching the 'Improved Air Carrier' we will start building them, as soon as possible, the construction time for these carriers will be about a year. These carriers will be able to carry the Ju87 'Stuka' and BF109 fighters and will be a match for anything Great Britain or any other navy could put against us. I am confident the Carrier Rudels will be a potent offensive weapon for Germany to rule the seas."

Hitler, "I Agree, we will start building the Carriers as soon as possible and as resources allow, Werner please your briefing."

Werner von Fritsch, "Mein Führer, first I will give a brief overview of our victorious forces performance in the interdiction campaign in Spain. Our Infanterie Divisions performed well and were able to meet all tasks and objectives set for them. Our Panzer divisions performance unfortunately were not so good, they lost in the major battle for the province of Guadalajara and were forced to withdraw to regroup, this was predominantly due to the pore performance of the PzKfw I, which was no match for the Republican (Russian) T26 Panzer, which mounted a 45mm gun against the MG34 Machine Guns of the Pzkfw I. After the battle our Panzer Divisions put captured T26 Panzers into service and even mounted 20mm Cannons on the Pzkfw I to make it more effective, this improved matters and from then on the Panzer Divisions performed well. The only major problem was that the Panzer Divisions had had to wait for the Infanterie to catch up to consolidate the captured territory and support the next attack."

image0148mr.jpg
PzKfw I, mounting a 20mm Cannon, Spain 1936.

Werner Continued, "Mein Führer, we need better Panzer's and more Mobile Infanterie to work with the Panzer Divisions in the Attack, I have plans to form Motorized Infanterie Divisions that will be able to keep up with the Panzers and give support and consolidate captured territory."

Hitler, "Good, we will develop new and better panzers as the resources become available. How is Heinz Guderian progressing?"

Werner von Fritsch, "Mein Führer, Heinz is progressing well and is now able to put the lessons learned in Spain to good use. He is refining his concept of Lightning War (Blitzkrieg); I will instruct him to send details to your office"

Hitler, "Thank you Werner, now Hermann your briefing please."

Hermann Goring, "Mein Führer, we are currently developing ‘an all out fighter’ version of the BF109 and which will be superior to every current Fighter and will be able to rule the skies for years to come. We have finished developing the Ju87 'Stuka' and have currently four hundred in production, with the first batch due for completion shortly. We have received plans from Nationalist Spain of a Strategic Bomber; I believe we should develop this as soon as possible. Our Bomber and Fighter Geschwaders we sent to assist our forces sent to Spain performed well and the BF109D Fighter was more than a match for the Fighters the Republicans were able to put against them."

Hitler, "Hermann, as I have stated before we have no need for a Strategic Bomber, but as we have the plans we can design one, but there will be no plans to put it into production."

Hermann Goring had at least got Hilter's approval to design a Strategic Bomber and Germany would be able to build them if needed.

Hitler, "Thank you gentleman, we have a lot to do, but alas with only limited resources, which I'm working to resolve, when we have finished developing the Improved Air Carrier we will put a research team onto researching better Armor and Artillery, but we should wait until Heinz Guderian reports to see what type of Panzer's will be best suited for his concept of Blitzkrieg warfare. Good Day Gentlemen!"

Hitler, "Good day gentlemen, I've call this meeting to be briefly updated on Foreign Affairs, Intelligence and the current status of the Armed Forces. Constantin if you would like to begin"

Constantin von Neurath, "Mein Führer, we have had a good year and have managed to persuade Hungary to join our military alliance with Nationalist Spain, Portugal I understand from Wilhelm, are most likely to Join before the end of the year, they just need a little bit more persuading of the benefits. We are giving both Hungary and Nationalist Spain all the assistance we can to improve their military and industrial capacity, they have both already seen major benefits of being in the alliance."

Europe January 1938.

Hitler, "Constantin, you must improve relations with the USA, with its Industrial Capacity the USA must be kept out of any future war in Europe."

Constantin von Neurath, "Mein Führer, we have been trying, but they still have negative feelings about us. I will instruct our ambassador to try harder."

Hitler, "You do that! Now Wilhelm, what intelligence do you have?"

Wilhelm Canaris. "Mein Führer, things are looking good in Europe, Portugal is sure to join our military alliance with Hungary and Nationalist Spain before the end of the Year. Italy, Bulgaria and Rumania are showing signs that they may join the 'Axis' alliance, this is the term the British and French have given to the German military alliance with Nationalist Spain and Hungary, they call it the 'Axis of Evil'. Stalin is still 'in his paranoid way' killing all his Generals, at this rate he will have corporals leading his armies instead of Generals, looks good for us, even thou he has a huge Army 'of peasants', he's no threat to our security. France are still stuck in there Maginot mentality and are still building fortresses on the German French Boarder, to blind to see that an attacker can just go around them, the French make me laugh, they still think there fighting the first war. The British are our only real threat in Europe with their huge Navy they rule the sea, but they only have a small Army which will not be a threat to Germany on land."

Year 1939

Hitler held a 'Status of the Nation' meeting on January 3rd, Present were Foreign Minister 'Constantin von Neurath', Intelligence Minister 'Wilhelm Canaris', Armaments Minister 'Hjalmar Schacht', Wehrmacht Headquarters (OKW) Chief of Staff 'Ludwig Beck'.

Hitler, “Good morning gentleman. I have called this meeting so you can update me on the current status of our Nation, Constantin you will please give an over view of our Diplomatic relations.”

image0297wr.jpg
Europe January 1939

Constantin Von Neurath, "Mein Führer, we have again had a good year and have managed to persuade Portugal to join our military alliance with Nationalist Spain and Hungary. I understand from Wilhelm that Italy, Romania and Bulgaria are most likely to join the Military Alliance soon, they just need a little bit more persuading of the benefits. We currently have very good relations with Argentina and it may be worth persuading them to join the axis alliance in the future. We are giving our allies all the assistance we can to improve their military and industrial capacity; they are already seeing major benefits of being in the alliance. Austria and the Sudetenland have been integrated into the nation and we have been working Very hard at improving our relations with the US, our relations are now very positive. Great Britain and France are wary of our intentions but they have not withdrawn diplomatic relations with us or any of our alliance countries”.

Hitler, “Good news regarding the US, Wilhelm your briefing please.”

Wilhelm Canaris handed out documents outlining the current status of armed forces of the major powers.

Luftwaffe January 1939.

Wilhelm Canaris, “Mein Führer, things are still looking good for us in Europe; Czechoslovakia is on the verge of breaking up, we will soon be able to integrate the rest of Czechoslovakia into our nation. Great Britain and France are wary of our intentions, but do not want war. Poland have approached and joined a military alliance with France, Great Britain and its commonwealth countries, for some reason best known to themselves they have amassed at least ninety percent of their Army along our border, at the last count there's at least sixty divisions.”

Hitler, “I'm not surprised! I have demanded land access to East Prussia; they have been told that my patience will only last so long! We have no plans to attack Poland at present, but who knows what tomorrow will bring. Constantin, you need to reassure the Poles that Germany only has peaceful intentions. Now Wilhelm please continue.”

Wilhelm Canaris, “Mein Führer, Mussolini is ambitious but he is wavering regarding joining the axis alliance, he wants to be on the 'winning side' and will not join the axis alliance until he is confident. Bulgaria and Romania are still looking likely to join the Axis alliance soon.”

Hitler, “I was in Italy recently were Mussolini showed off his military, I tell you I was not impressed! Who needs the Italian's anyway! They will come crawling and begging to join the axis alliance you wait and see! Wilhelm please continue.”

Wilhelm Canaris, “Mein Führer, there is no significant build up of military forces in Europe bar Russia, France and Great Britain do not want a war, as was proved regarding the Sudetenland. Nothing has changed in Russia, Stalin must have killed most of his Generals by now, Huge Army no leaders, what a fool!”

Hitler, “Thank you Wilhelm, Ludwig your briefing please!”

Ludwig Beck, “Mein Führer, we currently have under construction, Three marine Division (series), Six Motorized Divisions (series), Four Aircraft Carriers (two parallel series), One Battleship, Two Carrier Air Groups, Four Fighter Geschwaders (series), Five Panzer Divisions (series) and a number of Brigades. Our biggest problem is that there is not enough industrial capacity to upgrade our forces with the latest equipment. Our research teams are developing new equipment at a prodigious rate and we can't keep up, I have prioritized the Panzer Divisions and the Luftwaffe for new equipment! But its slow in coming.”

image0377wq.jpg
Industrial Capacity Jan 1939.

Hitler, “Good! Hjalmar you have been appointed to increase industrial capacity, we would like to hear how you are doing? Your briefing please.”

Hjalmar Schacht “Mein Führer, I'm pleased to inform you that we have been able to increase Industrial Capacity by Ten Percent. This extra capacity is being used to upgrade our military with the latest equipment. We currently have under research; Direct Ground Support Doctrine (Ernst Udet), it's no good having all this new technology if the military don't know how to use it! Assembly Line Experimentation (I.G. Farben), Basic Medium Panzer (Krupp) this is the Pzkfw III and will be the main battle panzer of the Heer. Also being researched is Basic Field Artillery (Rheinmetall) and Advanced Computing Machine (Konrad Zuse).”

Hitler, “I am pleased with the progress so far. Thank you gentlemen.”

January 6th. Armament briefing. New Technology Developed, Ernst Udet has completed his research into Direct Ground Support Doctrine. Hermann Goring given the research project Logistical Strike Doctrine.

General staff briefing. Due to the sudden death of Hjalmar Schacht, Walter Funk is appointed Armaments Minister.

January 8th. Armament briefing. New Technology Developed, Rheinmetall have completed their research into basic field Artillery. MAN given the research project Early Self-propelled Artillery.

February 3rd. General Staff Briefing, Joachim Von Ribbentrop appointed Foreign Minister replacing Constantin von Neurath. This comes as a surprise to many nations and rumors abound about why he’s spending so much time in the Soviet Union!

March 10th. Intelligence briefing. Romania have had a sudden change of Government. Germany has established diplomatic relations with the New Government of Romania. This comes as a disappointment to Hitler as he was hopping that Rumania would join the Axis Alliance, but because Germany needs the Oil supplied by Rumania he chooses not to intervene. He instructs the Foreign office to test relations and see if they can persuade the new Government to join the Axis.

March 15th. The End of Czechoslovakia, Hitler agreed to install Tiso as a puppet leader in Slovakia and the rest of Czechoslovakia was annexed by Germany. Slovakia agreed to join the Axis Alliance. One Czech Light Panzer Division and two Infanterie Divisions agreed to join the German Heer, there addition was welcomed.

March 24th. Lithuania agrees to let the German dominated Province of Memel join the German Nation.

image0394lv.jpg
Germany March 24th 1939

In response to the German dismemberment of Czechoslovakia, Great Britain and France responded by guaranteeing the integrity of the Polish state.

Hitler realizing that Poland would not bend to his Demands for the return of the Posen, Upper Silesia and the Prussian Districts, ceded to Poland under the Versailles Treaty, instructed OKW to draw up Plans for the Invasion of Poland. Hitler realized that an Invasion of Poland may lead to Soviet Union Intervention, this was why he had appointed Joachin Von Ribbentrop as foreign Minister and given him the secret task of negotiating a nonaggression pact with the Soviet Union.

Thank's GhostWiter, but it's not quite historical. Germany is in an alliance with Nationalist Spain, Portugal, Hungary and Slovakia.

Germany has taken Military control over Slovakia and Hungary but not Portugal and Nationalist Spain. This has had interesting results as you will see when I do my next Post, hopefully Tonight.

Nice read. Great pictures, some of which I never saw before. :)
