Prologue

When the Old Russian Empire collapsed in 1917 many of those Workers, Soldiers and Sailors imvolved in the uprisings were working towards building a better World. These hopes were however quickly smashed when the Bolsheviks under Lenin seized power and the last remanants of democracy were ground away in the horrors of the civil war. The Soviet Union under Lenin and Trotsky emerged victorious in 1922 despite massive foreign intervention. After the Civil war the hardship for the Russian and many ethnic people continued as the war had completely wrecked the agriculture and and so massive and widespread starvation took hold, allthough the situation was slowly improving by the end of 1923. Lenins death in 1924 once more threatened to throw the young Soviet Union into turmoil. Leon Trotsky, formerly Chief of the Red Army, and Joseph Vissarionovich Jugashvili "Stalin" both claimed to be the legitimate sucessor of Lenin at the head of the country.

Leon Trotzky

A fierce but still well-hidden Powerstruggle ensued between Trotzky who advocated a slow and semi-democratic socialism and Stalin who was aiming for an authoritatrian state centered around himself, ending with Trotzky beeing exiled to Mexico and Stalin retaining a bullet in his head. By 1927 the worst of the hardships of the great famine and the Civil War had faded and Stalin introduced several five year plans to "put the USSR onto the map of the worlds economic powers." This crash industrialization caused many problems and almost sent the Soviet Union into another great famine, and in the vast depths of Russia and western Siberia whisper began about people whishing Trotzky at the helm of their nation. Stalin brutally repressed those and yet, some of these wispers reached Trotzky in his exile, who much to his own regret could do nothing about it. The great depression of 1929 onwards convinced Stalin that the west had entered the last stage of capitalism and that the World, or at least Eastern and Northern Europe were ripe for the picking, ready to be integrated into the "Workers Paradise". The Red Army started to mass on the countrys western borders in l mid-1930 and this buildup lasted throughout 1931. The Western Powers, most prominently Britain, France and the slowly healing Germany paid great interest to this. Allthough Germany quickly dropped from this informal agreement versus the Soviet Union with hitlers rise to power in 1933 Russia was beeing watched, and when Stalin was ready to move against Finnland in 1933 Britain and France issued a joint Guarantee of Independence in respect to Finnland. Stalin, knowing that the outdated and underequipped Red Army would most likely be defeated in the multi-front war that a conflict with Britain and France would bring reluctantly backed down, voving to his inner Circle that this humiliation would be avenged one day.

He may have backed down in Finnland but was not backing down from his plan for Soviet Domination of at least Europe. In late 1935 the Red Army was once more on the move, this time towards the polish border. Stalins prestige had suffered massively and he therefore ordered Laventi Beria, the head of the NKVD to begin perparations for a massive purge throughout Soviet society. The Red Army leadership would be the first to be purged, as Stalins paranoia, some believe furthered by the bullet still lodged in his head, lead him to believe that the Generals were still loyal to Trotsky, who was becoming increasingly vocal in his criticism of Stalins Soviet Union and who had founded the Red Army at the beginning of the Civil War. The purge was to begin in January 1936.

When 1936 began, the Soviet Union looked at interesting times.

Okay. This is the next AAR, and a replacement for my UK AAR which came to an unplanned end. HOI2 DDA v1.1, modified 1936 scenarion DAIM ( no smep, this has screwed up too many of my plans in the past ) several custom events, vanilla events rewritten. This is a work in progres yadda yadda yadda, the same stuff I always say at this point. First update tomorrow.

Trekaddict, do you want critic mode on or off? It might be I have something to say about what you write since I have some knowledge of and experience with communism.

As long as it is constructive fire away. But bear in mind that this is Alternate History, so it will not always be like in RL.

Affirmitive. I don't want to be a pedant, I'll just speak when I have something of interest to say.

Well, I'll be reading this one. See how it goes and all.

And for constructive criticism and all, I might when I really feel like it.

It seems that my modding went faster than estimated ( no annoying db error whenever I start it up like with the Roosevelt event )

Mangudai No Problem.

KiMaSa Maybe, but remember, this is Uncle Joe we are talking about, and this one is even crazier than the RL one.

RGB Hopefully better than the last time. As for constructive critizism: In my previous AARs I took a great deal from that without offering any acknowledgement. From now on people will recive it when/if I use some of their ideas.

Deus Eversor Foresight is good, but nobody foresaw 1991 :/ ;)

Chapter 1

The Soviet Union of January 1936 was a troubleled Nation. Stalin was ruling with an Iron fist, but still could not quell the rumblings in the countless little villages that dotted the Soviet Countryside. The ailing Kalinin, nominally Stalins co-ruler was not fons of the man, but for the sake of his own skind remained silent.

Stalin was realist enough to see that the Red Army was by no means up to what Stalin was planning for the country. He "encouraged" Tuchatjevskij who was Head of STAVKA at the time to begin reforms towards turning the Red Army, which consisted entirely of conscripts into a more professional Army ( ironically Trotzky had been arguing for this during the struggle with Stalin ).
Another step towards Soviet surpremacy was the reaglinment of the Soviet Unions industrial production. The horribly outdated equipment the Red Army, especially its Infantry Divisions, and the Red Air Force used and the severe manpower shortages in many units made it necesary to put the construction of new units on hold. Allmost all industrial capacity was allocated in a way to change the situation. Stalin also authorized the increased production of consumer goods that would serve to bolster Stalins popularity among the Soviet population. (AN: 15% start dissent) He also ordered an increased research into various technologies.

The foreign situation was worsening for the Soviet Union. Poland and Romania had entered an alliance, and Finnland was moving towards the Allied Powers. So whichever path Stalin took it would surely lead to war with at least two enemies at the same time. If he attacked Poland Romania and maybe even teh Allies would come to their aid. If he attacked Romania then Poland would surely attack the Soviet Union, and by now Finnland was so close with the Allied Powers that any attack on the small but defiant Scandinavian country would probably promt an Allied response in the form of formal entry of Finnland into the Allied Alliance. Helsinki knew this and therefore soundly rebuffed all Soviet maneuvers.

The usual setup event.

This SU is unusually belligerent, the RL counterpart being decidedly inward-looking and only expanding once a truly golden opportunity presented itself.

War with allies is rather unwinnable; they can't hurt you, you sure as hell can't hurt them...

Not neccesarily, I have seen Soviet Sea Lions before...

Yeah. But that's couple of years from now. Now, there is no way Red Navy could land in Britain (short of exploit by stationing TP right next to British beaches and invading immediately after DOW)

How's Hitler? Btw, be careful about calling RL Stalin crazy and unrealistic. I agree that he was pragmatic, ruthless, sneaky, and ambitious, but not those two. At least not as anything but exceptions (like his imprisonment of Jewish doctors in his last moments of reign). His complete lack of typical moral standards and sometimes mysterious and impulsive acts make him seem like something of a loose cannon, though. :D

How did he get that bullet in his brain? Tsaritsyn?

I haven't got any ideas for what strategy to use. It's kind of a minefield in Europe, and not many easy and none-gamey targets anywhere else. Give me couple of updates and we'll see. ;)

4th Dimension Yes, but I want to see these awesoem SKIF Naval Icons for thr Soviet Union in action.

rcduggan Thanks.

th3freakie Glad to have you aboard comrade.

DarkReborn AH stands for Alternate History. As for who will rise.... I will not tell. Yet. :D

Mangudai Hitler is alive and as well as he can be. He will be dealt with though.

Stalin was a loose cannon all right, but his actions can be seen as somewhat crazy. :D

As for the bullet: I will explain it in greater detail at some point, but ATM I can say that Trotzky might have somethng to do with it.

As for targets: Thats why I made it like this.

So far, so mostly standard.

Interesting the Soviet's choosing Standing Amy though. Surely Hawk Lobby or Interventionism would suit Stalin's expansive foreign policy?

Fernando Torres Thank you.

El Pip It won't stay like that.

I used standing Army because of the org and gearing.
