What if, on the development screen where you build buildings, you could build wonders? What is was thinking is that if you own a province which historically was the home of a major landmark or important building, such as the Ca'Granda Hospital in Milan or Versailles in Ile De France, which normally show up as an event. Instead they would each have their own unique icon on the development screen, which would be grayed out unless you met the requirements to build it. On completion of a wonder (which would take several years) the builder would receive 50 or so prestige, as well as another bonus, (perhaps republican tradition or legitimacy) and a permanent buff. Canals would be placed under this mechanic. Some wonders would start the game already built, but could maybe be rebuilt if destroyed.

I guess I mean to say add the national monuments from the DLC in as buildings and have them give buffs. Maybe add a few, like the Taj Mahal.

I would love this, especially if they were to appear on the map as well. The main drawback is implementing this in way that it well spread around so that some regions don't get too big of an advantage because they have a myriad of special buildings. It'd be nice to have "generic" wonders and great projects though, in order for this remain somewhat balanced and feasible.

Like for example Grand Cathedral / Majestic Palace / Exotic Gardens, things that wouldn't look out of place in any province. So if you choose to unite Germany as Hesse and want to keep Hesse as you Capital, you could opt to build a Grand Cathedral there instead of Köln, if you like. This way it is not too railroaded and not too ahistorical, but still fun and adds variety. Let's 1 could be built of each per larger regions (Europe & Russia [including Causcasus and Siberia], Middle East & Africa, Far East, Americas). The buildings style and name would depend on culture, just so that a Grand Cathedral would be a Pagoda or whatever in China.

The idea was to use the models from the National Monuments DLC.
