Wonder if there will be some way to reward and punish vassals.

So im super hyped for overlord but there is one question that has crossed my mind. Will there be actual ways of punishing or rewards vassals? I thought of giving resources and stuff to vassals but apparently you cant do independent trade deals with your vassals.

Like all i see if you fail in your rebellion is you get put back under the overlords thumb but no real long lasting impact you just wait and try again.

Like in games like crusader kings and stuff the risk of rebellion for vassals is their entire family being put to the sword or having someone else take their place. But in stellaris that isnt possible as leaders dont really matter.

Same could be said for rewarding vassals. Like i wonder if i can like take worlds from other vassals and give them to that vassal as a reward for loyalty. Maybe Loyalty can be used to give positive effects to the vassal i dont know.

Just a bit worried vassals dont really risk anything by rebelling or gain anything by staying loyal.

Was this post inspired by the bad, naughty, disloyal Fox People in today's trailer?

Because they definitely need to be punished.

It did come to mind because the idea of playing 2 sides sounds fun to gain your independence but i feel like there needs to be a provrbial axe over your head. Like when declaring war you really got to think if you are ready to commit before doing it as you stand to lose a lot but gain a lot.

I think the restriction is you can't trade a resource that's already defined in the contract. E.g. if your vassal is contractually obligated to pay you minerals and energy, you can't make them send you more minerals and energy in a trade deal, you'd have to alter the contract. But you can have them send you consumer goods or something instead.

See, this is an example why I was rooting for an Anti-Rebellion Weapon™ (later changed to a surface-based WMD): ;)

I knew I had seen a dev reply before, but it took a while to track down.

If an Overlord-Subject Agreement has a term relating to subsidies or tithes of a given resource, then trading of that resource by normal diplomacy is blocked.

U can reward ur vassals by building overlord holdings, which are beneficial for them on their planets (and u also can punish them by building holdings which abuse them). In one dev diary i also saw a dev comment with a "lend fleet" option in the trade menue (but this one so far never was explained, so it might not make it into the release).

And not to forget - u are able to renogitiate the subject contract. So u can decide there to give the subject some of ur alloy/research/basic ressource/special ressource incomr. Or u can punish them by making the contract more unfair.
