There are various kinds of strokes. And I hear tale that each appeals differently to various kinds of folks.

I guess I'm lucky in that I'm just a big sci-fi dork, I even like the bad sci-fi, so I am pleased with literally any race that they add. More anthropomorphic animals, yay! More bizarre creatures whose evolution has clearly taken them down a wildly different path, yay! They want to add a creature that's clearly based on a kind of animal, but still eschews the standard human morphology, yay! Weird humanoids that follow the Roddenberry 'just glue something on the face' method of alien creation, yay! A species pack of 8-15 different android shapes, I'll throw my money at the screen in hopes that it gets to them even faster!

Now, admittedly it's easiest to request anthropomorphic animal people. "Wolf men" is two words, but "4-armed, 4-legged athropods that vaguely resemble the earth crawdad except for having a third central eye, and a vaguely hatched skull shape that gives the effect of allowing wide peripheral vision that, because of the third eye, still has full depth perception" is an entire description. By the way, I want that crawdad race in game, even more than I want a wolf man.

I've always been a little disappointed with the whole approach to the physical aspects of species, firstly I'd have liked to see a more modular or perhaps procedural method for species generation, perhaps with player defined parameters that are then used to generate a species portrait. Clearly this would be much more difficult to implement and has little value, which brings me onto my second gripe, because the physical nature of a species affects absolutely nothing in the game. It's just a picture, the only value it has is that it makes it easier to differentiate between species.

Wait, there aren't any wolves in game? Where are the wolves? Who let the wolves out? Who? Who? Who who? Who let the wolves out? Who? Who? Who who?

But in all seriousness, wolves, bears, non-humanoid octupus men, a crawdad with four arms and four legs. All of these things are missing.

where are my lobstermen?

It's recognizable and doesn't look like crap which makes it one of my favorites. I wish they had more recognizable furries over indistinguishable generic ugly aliens. The really weird aliens are good too, but most of the avians and mammals are just hideous and I wish I could filter them out from being used in the game.
Well im sorry, but i just dont agree.

I can kinda see why space furries are so commonly requested. Everyone wants their favorite animal, and admittedly it's both easy for the person to request and the artist to draw.

I don't mind, but I'm the kind of person who leans towards the more exotic kind of aliens.

Though on the topic of animal aliens, if I could choose a nominee, I'd pick a moray eel based alien. Seeing as they are one of the animals most popularly known for having pharyngeal jaws and thus receive frequent comparisons to Ridley Scott's xenomorph, I think they would be a fine candidate.

I think there are many problems with imagening "aliens". We only know and reckognize ourselves as "intelligent spezies", we also only know life on earth. We define life as something we found on earth and still struggle to find a good definition for what is life exactly. The more something is like us, the more we think it's "intelligent". But philosophically we don't realy know what "intelligent" and "life" mean, hence we even less know how to define "intelligent life" and how it would look like if it's not from earth.

We only can think of things we know, break it down to parts and recombine these parts. To think of something truly new is beyond our abilities. The art of creativity lies in the depth we can break down the things we know and to put them back together in another way that follows rules we have learned. This can lead to very strange designs that apear "alien".
But is it realy desireable to create alien things? If we imagine something that is made of lithium, methane and dark matter and has gas-whirlwinds as something like hands.... and we even find some way to draw this concept, then how do we interact with this "creature" in a meaningful way? There is a necessity to humanize the alien, to have it in a game that is mostly played by humans.

To put an animals head on a humanoid body is simple and we like to give it traits and imagine a personality it might have, since we have something we can link this image to. If there is a semi-gaseous whirl of invisible matter... then... well... what do we do with this?

That said, i still would like more truly alien designs. And more designs that make biologically more sense than a blossom for a face. I like the artwork, but many designs do not appear to be.. biologically functional. Therefore i'd prefer space-cats and rubber-foreheads over cool but disfunctional aliens. Functional looking alien-aliens would be awesome though!

I also want more unique species that are not just animal heads, I mean I don't mind those, but we already have enough of them.
See for example the species in Mass Effect, they're clearly based on something we are familiar with, yet also unique and not butt-ugly, though maybe a bit too much on the humanoid side.

Also more cuties, please.

Actually the Turian from Mass Effect were based off of bird and reptiles, namely dinosaurs or something if I recall correctly.

But I can understand the reasons for both sides of the argument.

But we all know that there'll be more species, whether official or by modders, for us to choose from!

I will have you know, that that is not only NOT a lobsterman

but it is in-fact a Crab man, a crab man that looks like it's constantly depressed for some reason. How in any way can that compare to the frenzied might of the lobsterman? Are you saying are crustaceans look the same? that's racist... speciest? genus-ist? taxon-ist... none of these seem right...

There's one already.

Well I'd argue thats the whole point of aliens, to make something humans do not have concept of. I'd find this gaseous alien concept you came up with extremely interesting, personally.
