The dialogue mentioned my steward calling the architect a charlatan, but I'm not getting any other feedback from the game about the architect being a fake or anything of the sort. On the other hand, no new castle seems to be building, either. Is this WAD?

As far as i know

you have to wait a meantime of 260 days then the castle will pop up

or i read 1,5 to 2 years and then it pops.

Also

You should double check your character. You probably had a "Building Castle" buff in the same spot you get things like "Holding a Fest", "Holding a Summer Fair", etc.

There are two different events for this. In one, your steward will tell you that he knows the architect and that he is trustworthy. Every single time I have agreed to build on this event the castle has been built around a year later and I even get a rebate of 100 gold because it cost less than expected.

The other event, however, has your steward telling you that he knows the man and he is NOT to be trusted. I follow his advice and decline to build the castle, so I can't tell you how this one turns out.

Either way, you don't actually see the castle being built after you accept the event. If just appears magically a while later.

If the architect is described as a charlatan, you usually have to pay a bit more for the castle later (but it's typically still less than it would normally cost).

Thanks, guys. The construction was not represented on the map, but it completed eventually after an event where I had to pay 100 more, for a total of 500. As a converted tribal I had lean counties, so it would have cost me 600, but I imagine 400-100=300 for a trustworthy architect is a really nice thing when you already have several holdings.

Now I wonder:

1. What happens if you don't have a demesne county with a spare barony slot?
2. Do tribals get this event and actually receive a castle?
3. What if I actually ordered a normal construction in the meantime and exhausted all my slots? Would I get an extra castle slot the same way the military order events may very well lead to a lot of such extra castle slots in k_Jerusalem?

I can confirm that the event doesn't check for standard restrictions regarding building type. Thus, I now have a county in which there are 3 castles and only that. One's mine from a converted tribal settlement, another is owned by a military order and finally the one from the architect.

I once had the second event (with the steard warning about the architect) end with money wasted, no castle built. I've got half my money back then. Also I think I've seen the event with trustworthy architect end with a castle built but no rebate. I suspect that there are 4 possible outcomes (castle + rebate, no castle + rebate, just the castle and nothing at all, which may be tied to both starting events)

Then why post here?

Narrow connection with the topic is overrated, IMHO. :) I feel for him. I definitely would like an option to create a city. Or a temple. Historically, rulers should have ways of commissioning a lot of temples after getting baptised or converting into a modern modern church organization.

Can you create extra holdings this way? It at least used to be possible to add an extra holding to a county when a holy order asks to let you build a castle in the last empty spot (start building a new holding before you accept the offer).

I also 'ordered' a castle, but died before it was finished and I never saw it appear. I guess it makes sense, but how do I imagine this: somewhere in Vexin, there's some half-build castle ruins that are most likely haunted?

I know I'm digging threads here, but nothing's changed since then: the event is still around and still doesn't show you anything.

Those events are character-bound via flags, so if your character dies mid-way through the chain, the flag is lost and so is the gold.

Can you create extra holdings this way? It at least used to be possible to add an extra holding to a county when a holy order asks to let you build a castle in the last empty spot (start building a new holding before you accept the offer).
I know I managed to create a third holding slot when I turned a partially tribal two-holding county into a prince-bishopric. The county had been feudal with a castle but was taken over by tribal Norse. I ended up with two free temples and the castle instead of the single temple I expected the tribal holding to become.
