I would however change the bulb collour of the transcended spiecies just to differenate them from regular synths.
The colours should either be selectable or based on your empire's colour. Although the latter could result in them being identical to robots/droids/synth/AI consciousness.

Rather difficult to do black bulb :)
I would rather standardise the colour (I would go "heavenly white" for that) to not confuse one with another. Other digitalised species are different story.

In the end wouldn´t we need an synth overlay for each existing portrait? So everyone know where they come from.
I can imagine they will add it, may as patch after utopia is released.

For each one is excessive man, maybe they may make one for each phenotype
I think that may be the simpliest solution. As of right now, it's still up in the air until any official word. We did get some humanoid portraits just because they felt people wanted them, so who's to say we won't ever get any other portraits.

I agree with proposal of new robot portraits for different phenotypes. Current one is basically humanoid - head, 2 arms... Logical design for Humans, Mammalians or Reptilians. But Avians should have wings for example. And I can't imagine reason why Arthropoids, Molluscoids or Fungoids whould even create something like that. Shouldn't Starfish droid looks more like his creator?

My entire point is that having a single portrait for the synths of any species is unrealistic because half the point of uploading is that it frees you from the prison of limited biology.

Nah. Or more, the prison might be your mortality, but social norms won't just go away. Even now you can radically change your body, and while it's unfair, some terrible people (who may be the majority, unfortunately) will totally judge you, impact your ability to find a job and force you into a specific social circle that may or may not be what you'd otherwise pick.

So I'd expect that any civilisation undergoing such a transformation would either be rather conservative and expect you to spend your (not necessarily monetary) wealth to look as "natural" (except perhaps "perfect", or with very perfect imperfections) as possible, or swing hard to the other point, and expect something radically different to show off how "modern" they are. But eventually there would likely be a lot of conformity. Edit: the ideal to conform to might change with time and perhaps location, being essentially fashion — and say, having members of a faction look really different would be fun — but I'd still see it as limited.

I mean, the Banks update makes it almost obligatory to point out Culture — and that's exactly a civilisation that could turn you into anything from a sentient balloon to a spaceship — but choices that ranged too wildly from a relatively narrow concept of a "standard" body would make you "weird," and plenty of people people would shun you for that (remember that protagonists of most novels were actually weirdos of their societies, though).

Well, i remember lot of asking for more synth portaits since beta, and it still not happened.
If i had to choose between uniform synth portrait for all species and not changing potrait at all i would choose the second.

Most portraits even between phenotypes are just different flavours of humanoid, though- the Synth portrait is accurate for everything except the oddballs.

Doesn't mean they can't make a few oddities, or head variations. It'd just be another layer. Like a hat.
