If I'm uploaded, why would I want to live in human cities and do human things?

Why wouldn't I use a body that lets me do other things- a body designed for deep space, for the crushing atmosphere of gas giants, etc? A networked collective of synthetic butterflies that let me dive through clouds and read a million books of poetry?

The human body is only "the most flexible" because it's the only one we've encountered with advanced intelligence- but octopi are highly adaptable too with tentacles, and birds can solve puzzles and make tools with their talons and beaks, and some ants manage agriculture with mandibles and teamwork.
So presumably you would want a body that looks different than the default synth?

Sure. So would everyone. My entire point is that having a single portrait for the synths of any species is unrealistic because half the point of uploading is that it frees you from the prison of limited biology. You could have a dozen bodies for different purposes- you could jump between them, you could fork yourself across them, you could modify and retrofit and change them out as you wanted. Your bodies could be as specialized or as generalized as you'd like.

But that's not exactly plausible to depict on an art-design level. So I have zero issue with Paradox having one portrait for all synths as shorthand for "this is an artificial, robotic POP unit" at a glance.

Let's not forget one problem with using a single graphics for all robots - if multiple empires finish synth ascention then we'll end up with multiple species looking identical.

That can already happen though. It's just rare- same as a completed Ascension Path will likely be.
Just because it's rare does not mean it should not be discouraged (in fact, there were tons of justified complaints about this before the Devs limited reusing portraits somewhat), and I don't think ascensions are going to be all that rare, especially on 1000 stars maps, as that's just 4 ascention slots, one of which can be gained via tech.
The idea of completely taking over one of the crises is even more absurd.
I'd say being able to side with a Crisis could be an interesting twist to sometimes pull off.

It would provide an interesting end-game, as while yes the bonuses are rather absurd it would quickly become you vs the entire galaxy; win or lose, the game is ending. Though it would require a way to make wars slog a bit less... specialized war goals, perhaps?

Given how fast they went through the traditions tree during the stream (even if not final numbers are not final), I wouldn't say that. There's nothing that seem to block Ascension Paths, so eventually every empire has a chance to choose one. I think it's rather safe to assume that at least 3 empires will choose the same path in a big galaxy - that's still 3 identical robotic pops. Even a bit of colour variation would be welcome.

But really... robotic fungus! Mycelium with terminator eyes! Blorgs made of friendly and adhesive meta-silicate particles! No one could escape the friendship anymore...

There are more than enough Perks that you could absolutely choose not to take the ultra-specialized Ascension Path ones- on top of which, the Ascension Paths are highly-involved event chains requiring multiple steps and many resources to complete.

I very sincerely doubt repeats of the same Path are something worth worrying about or that Paradox will bother with it- at least beyond, as you suggest, colour variations. That's easy (the "playable synth" mods already tend to include a few palette swaps). Pretty sure we wont be seeing species-specific variants though.

Strictly speaking, synth portraits don't make sense for when you're playing humanoids. Why upload if you're just gonna walk around as a metal person? Get exotic. Fork yourself. Exist in any state you can imagine.

(A single Synth portrait is convenient shorthand for "robot" and while multiple options would be neat I have no expectation of the art time wasting time working on them when they have better things to be doing)

Well that's wrong, the artists work on the portraits, so they would waste no time in the game itself. I wont be that guy, but the expansion costs 20€, few more portraits would not be out of the reach, just few humanoids and few "strange".

Do you think the artists only work on portraits? Or is it not more likely they have many art assets to be working on- event title banners, ship textures, etc?

I would however change the bulb collour of the transcended spiecies just to differenate them from regular synths.
