This was also very quickly seen when you (Wiz) were filling out the unity trees on stream, when attempting to show off the ascension perks.

What exactly is the new mechanic, is it new or is it simply full bombardment? Or is it an improved version that is more efficient/more destructive?
It is titled "Armageddon". The planet in the icon looks practically molten. Use your imagination. ;)

I hope we can send a planet back to pre-FTL tech through Armageddon bombardment.

It probably turns the planet into a Tomb World once the fortification reaches zero and/or once all pops on the surface are dead.
Wiz said destruction of planets is a thing they want in Stellaris, but don't yet have any good concepts of implementing.
Thus we can assume this new bombardment setting will NOT destroy planets (or make them barren/tomb, which is, on a gameply perspective, the same).

I'm, just gonna assume it's another, stronger, bombardment level past 'full', thus making Supremacists more able to wage offensive wars.

I WOULD have preferred a completel overhaul of bombarding/planetary invasion (like mine) instead, but eh, whatever.

I don't like creating new features that are just slight tweaks on existing mechanics. Armageddon should do more than just be a slightly better full bombardment in the same way that private colonies should do more than just let you colonize without building ships. Both things imply such intricate potential but instead its just old mechanic +1. That's boring, why even pick those traditions if that's the case.

It's not the same at all, though.

Tomb worlds can still be colonized and terraformed.

I kinda assume its a setting that destroys tiles and pops

if kept up long enough it would wipe out an entire planets population

Its not actually a way to destroy planets and how quickly it can purge a planet is probably still a big balance question

"Armageddon", plus the molten-looking graphic, implies an end-of-the-world scenario. I doubt it turns into a Barren World, for the reasons you stated, but a Tomb World would work because it's still technically habitable and can be reversed by terraforming.

So it technically it would be, instead of destroying the planet, terraforming it into a tomb world? With bombs xP

It's just a matter of the right PR/spin...

My only concern is: if this is a better version of full bombardment that everyone potentially has access to... Does it mean that a Militarist empire's unique feature becomes obsolete if they complete this tradition? Not to mention everyone else can get it too? If you watched the livestream yesterday and split-frame paused to read the tooltips you'd notice full bombardment is tied to the Militarist ethos.

So if they really want to make ethics feel more distinct, I hope it's not just a straight upgrade to "more efficient full bombardment" but rather something that has a different and more situational purpose.
