The whole way France is handled in EU4 is pretty bad. Historically, while France was regarded as a/the superpower from the 11th to the 17th century, it was also a very divided country, plagued by internal conflict, cultural, social and religious unrest.

In the game, this is replaced by a few vassals, an culture group that means Britons and Francomtois are considered french even in 1444, and OP religious decisions that makes the whole reformation a non-event. Ideally, France should have something like Ming's three factions.

Mind you, this is not nearly as bad as Austria being a world power in 1444. But still. I wish France had more fluff.

The culture name doesn't bother me but if they change it based on these complaints, that's fine. If anyone doesn't like the name change, could just mod it back to present name. So I don't really see an issue with either outcome. Label is just that... label.

Cosmopolitaine is not a culture name, and it's not a correct french word. The closest thing it is to in "Cosmopolitain", an awful newspaper/magazine. I don't want to be attributed to louzy glossy pages, please!

I read the 'e' on the end as a feminine adjectival ending. Perhaps Paradox is taking a dig at Parisians' manliness.

First of all, the translation for cosmopolitaine should have been cosmopolite which is the translation for cosmopolitan
which means:
2.
Having constituent elements from all over the world or from many different parts of the world
3. So sophisticated as to be at home in all parts of the world or conversant with many spheres of interest: a cosmopolitan traveler.

of course Paris was a city of many culture back in these days so was France and pretty much all major cities in europe at that time.

Paradox could have added like 20 cultures with their provinces names, all accepted in france and it would have serve the same purpose. except for the accepted culture threashold.
I think they did a good job putting the most influencial culture in each region.

Except neither the Kingdom of France, the French Republic or the Kingdom of the French accepted any other culture than Oil French.

Wikipedia lists 1st French Empire as a superpower, but not the Kingdom of France, and with leadership of Louis XIV France just grew stronger, where did you get the idea that Kingdom of France actually was weakened by rule of Louis XIV?

I didn't see the one proper reply in this thread:
"Oh, for fucks sake"
Just wait until every other separatist-nationalist is going to find out about this. You're gonna have a culture for every single region in this game.

Now seriously on-topic:
as an outsider I found "cosmopolitaine" to be pretty decent in order to represent the mix of cultures present in France by that time. I also feel that cultural differences in France were way less important than the social and religious ones. I'd rather have the Huguenots presented better in the game than this discussion. Athough..."octo-tan" sounds awesome.

In the map you shared, it looks like a picture of France in the middle of a civil war, where one side also owned England. Fortunately for England, the England-owning faction lost the French civil war, which meant England avoided becoming a subordinate appendage of a much bigger kingdom :p

I know right ?

Despite many treacherous vassal insular normandy on top, the King still managed to kick their ass.
That is what I call awesomness

Nah if the Lancaster won the nobles in England would have been forced to abandon la langue noble for English and we would all be speaking a proper language in this forum. :p

I would not call Duchy of Burgundy a civil war state, because it actually won its independence and its existence as sovereign state was just too long.

But you are missing the point, if France would have been a super power why was it losing to a great power? Unless it itself was just a great power, it isn't even first 15th century wasn't even first time that happened, before reconquest of Philip II Augustus in 12th century England owned even more of France than it does in the picture that I posted.

France was plagued by two civil war. One between the King of France and the duke of Gascogne aka King of England who try to usurp the crown for more than a hundred years leading to much strife.

The second one being between the Armagnac and the Burgundy palace faction which officialy ended in 1435 long after Charles VII was crowned and retook Paris.

By the way Burgundy has never been independent from France.

Since you like maps:

http://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Duché_de_Bourgogne#/media/File:Map_France_1477-fr.svg

Even in your map Flanders and Burgundy are represented de jure in France if you look at the borders that cut Burgundy in half.

I strongly agree on the weak colossus. There should be some way to properly represent that. I'm sure there's only to be a little patient before the devs work on this.

Also, I strongly disagree for what concerns the name ''cosmopolitaine''. Which culture group currently in game doesn't represent a mix of cultures?

Really?

Wikipedia lists 1st French Empire as a superpower, but not the Kingdom of France, and with leadership of Louis XIV France just grew stronger, where did you get the idea that Kingdom of France actually was weakened by rule of Louis XIV?

Sh*t. Can't post my reply, have to re-write it :(

So, in a few words: in this page you're refering to:

1) Please read the beginning of the sentence:
Examples of these ancient or historic superpowers include; Ancient Egypt,[11] the Persian Empire,[12] the Greek Empire of Alexander the Great,[13] the Roman Empire,[14] the Mongol Empire, the Ottoman Empire , the Portuguese Empire, the Spanish Empire,[15] and the First French Empire of Napoleon.[16]
Either it would be dishonesty.

2) Just look at this tab under this sentence on the Wikipedia page.
Check if France was not amongst the top countries for nearly every criteria.
If the answer is ''Yes'': well done, France was a power/superpower (a power being less efficient in most criteria, while still being efficient in some of them).
If the answer is ''No''. Okay, do it again.

About defeats: yes, France new lot of defeats. And survived.
The Persian empire was an evident superpower, knew defeats, and didn't survived more than 3 years after Alexander the Great landed in Anatolia. But it was a superpower, like Hittites or Assyria earlier.
Aztecs were regional superpowers for the world they knew when Spanish landed there.
USA and USSR were superpowers, even if they were ashamed by lost wars in Vietnam and Afghanistan. And one of these finished quite badly, but still was a superpower.
