The solution for this would have been a diplo popup window: "Salzburg is plotting to attack Austria. Here are the allies who would be called. They are asking you if you would back their declaration of war. If so, they can declare war within 30 days." Player options: "Yes, I will prepare my forces! / No, the time is not right."

That way, they can go ahead and do the DoW if they want, but know that they cannot call you as an offensive ally.

But the other advantage of this is that you can prepare by setting your sliders and starting to move your troops around, rather than get caught flat-footed with all your morale at zero and your trade fleets exposed.

After all the hate for the better 1.5 AI, I'm loving this thread. The AI is all around better, and part of that is the risk taking. I do get annoyed with some of the calculations (My Brandenburg and AI Denmark/Norway should not assault Livonian Order backed by Lithuania and Muscovy). We have to be better players to work with the 1.5 AI.

The AI calls you because your kingdom is huge and can take on all those guys. Be careful with allying OPMs, as I'd avoid it. Unless you're gonna vassalize them and feed them.

Or you're like me, and you intentionally burden yourself with weak allies to keep things difficult.
Nothing like helping a weak AI OPM become a regional superpower, then have them rival and break alliance...

The biggest error Salzburg ever made was thinking that a human would join their war. If I have only 2k manpower, I'm certainly not going to bother with a pointless OPM war. Actually, even if I had full manpower, I'm not sure I would help them either. But that raises the question why I didn't just guarantee them instead ;)

I do think that AI should be a bit more considerate of their allies' - human or not - manpower when it comes to declaring a war where reliance on allies is absolute. Honestly, I'm not even sure if it was reasonable to honor that call to arms even if the OP was Italy given their manpower depletion.

@ OP

Bit*h please. As if you've never used strong allies to declare war on someone you can't take on yourself.

And the fact you're arguing that "he's too small, but I helped Bavaria cause they were bigger" is simply stupid. They're both your allies and would help you against bigger foes than their own military can handle. If you don't want/aren't prepared to help your allies in a vice versa situation, then play a vassal game...

I frankly do not see the problem here.

Salzburg thought you would honor the alliance and they went declaring war. I'm sure if you (Italy) was controlled by the AI, that alliance would have been honored.

This.

Its just that the AI thought higher of its Ally, then being an untrustworthy treatybreaker...

I was recently asked to join Lithuania's offensive war against Muscovy, despite their not wanting to join my war on Muscovy which ended just a year before. I thought they would only ask humans in situations where the AI would join, and I have never seen an AI break a truce.

There's no issue here. By agreeing to an Alliance they assumed they could count on your help, and they happened to trust you to honour it. If you weren't prepared to honour it you should have guaranteed them instead of allying them.

While I do see what the other posters are saying and I've used big nations to my advantage myself, I've got to agree with OP. The AI should know that a human can't be relied on like another AI. They should atleast consider what'll happen if the one that they want to fight for them doesn't honor the CTA.

And the problem with this is you now have the ai playing by different rules based on who the player is. I don't mind the ai treating the player the same as a human, I do think, however, that the ai should be a bit smarter about declaring wars based on their allies' strength only whether the allies are human or ai. If your strength is more than 80-90% based on allies you probably shouldn't go after anything bigger than yourself. The worst example of this I've seen in a game was Hungary, with 2k men and 120 manpower, declaring on a start-sized Bohemia that was allied with France with a blobby Austria as HRE. When I added up the troop count that got dragged in from all the vassals, PUs, and allies his 2k were attacking ~265k; since I was Russia the net result would have been about equal on troop count if I had been silly enough to accept (troop quality would have been a problem since France, being France, was a tech or two ahead of me plus ideas).

I don't mind fighting wars for my allies when they do some contributing but when they can make no notable contribution I'm much more reluctant, especially in an aggressive war like that.

OPMs do seem to be acting more "suicidally" but this is more them refusing to take inevitable defeat lying down. I have seen them take enormous all-or-nothing gambles to try and secure the future viability of their independent nation, especially in situations like this. Before, OPMs were unrealistically passive.

It's stupid to completely rely on your ally. I would never declare a war on an enemy 50x times my size just because I have 1 strong ally. The AI shouldn't do something this stupid. Now Salzburg is a vassal of Austria. Good job!

tahts what austria did in ww1 ^^ knowing germany will back them up xD

OPM made the mistake to trust a human. AI should never trust a humans word. never.
AI shouldn't have allied with the human at all. That was already a mistake. Humans can't be trusted!

j/k, op and opm made everything right. opm for trusting it's allies. OP for beeing backstabing its ally. Every human player doesn't play like a real leader of a country. If the AI would be aware of that, they wouldn't ally any human.

Is the AI really this stupid? Why does OPM Salzburg declare war on Austria, Brunswick, Burgundy, Cologne, Münster, Mantua, The Papal State and The Hansa? Seriously this suicidal AI behaving needs to stop. Now.

I think you shouldn't have allied him. You should have proclaimed guarantee.

Actually EU4 indeed has poor alliance system, EU4-alliance means that you are equal partners, but in fact, you wanted another kind of alliance, kind of union with you as head as Bavaria in Catholic League at Thirty Years' War times.

It's stupid to completely rely on your ally. I would never declare a war on an enemy 50x times my size just because I have 1 strong ally. The AI shouldn't do something this stupid. Now Salzburg is a vassal of Austria. Good job!

You haven't played as the Byzzies apparently :)

While I do see what the other posters are saying and I've used big nations to my advantage myself, I've got to agree with OP. The AI should know that a human can't be relied on like another AI. They should atleast consider what'll happen if the one that they want to fight for them doesn't honor the CTA.

By that reasoning the only alliances the AI should be forming are desperate ones, since the human is completely untrustworthy....

The problem is that AI's cannot tell if a human player will join the war before they declare, while humans CAN tell, by hovering the cursor over "call willing allies".

I think paradox should allow AIs to ask a player if he/she wants to join before declaring, and if the human refuses, the AI will have to re-evaluate the war.
