Quiet times

As Otto had appointed the position so wisely the following year was very quiet and he could visit the imperial court again. Emperor Heinrichs wife had meanwhile given birth to Otto von Franken, who would be the future Emperor if nothing unexpected happened and one of his not much very later to be born brothers had to take his place.
Otto was very proud, because he was sure the future Emperor was named after him, it just couldnt be a coincidence that he had visited the imperial court one year before Otto was born. The Emperor must have been quite impressed by Otto, good that a man with such good knowledge of people was reigning the Empire.

When Otto returned to Niederbayern he was immidiately approached by a group of nobles.
"Mylord, we are sent by several members of the court of Duke Otto von Nordheim. This group of people has formed to cooperate and achieve a revolt against the Duke as his unfair treatment of the counts and nobles in Bavaria can no longer stay this way. So do you want to join the Intrigue?"

Otto didnt really know what to do. On the one hand he felt that those people were wrong. Otto von Nordheim did quite a good job ruling Bavaria. But he also knew why they wanted to get rid of him. The stability he provided didnt leave any room for an expansion of power of other people in Bavaria. Otto clearly saw that he could never achieve anything in Bavaria as long as the Nordheims controlled it. But it just was not the right time to strike. Otto von Nordheim was much to powerful and most of the other counties of Bavaria controlled bei his family.
So he told the delegation:" I need some time to think this over...come back in some days and i will give you an answer."
The next day a rider was on his way to the duchal court with a message of Otto that unveiled the conspiracy.

"As long as i am not an enemy to fear for the Duke, i better keep him as a friend", Otto thought.

Ottos "honesty" made the duke trust Otto more and throughout the land he was celebrated for his loyalty.

The year 1070 should become a key year for the prosperity of Niederbayern.
The peasants could be educated to the common sense that god gave everybody his place in this world and thats where everybody has to do his best without trying to get to a better poition in society. The scholars called this "Divine Duty" and as it spread so succesfully in Niederbayern Count Otto I. was able to take away a higer percentage of the farmers production as they wouldnt complain about only having to work that the nobles can live better so much anymore.

The recently newly acquired weapon, the bow also was improved and made a little smaller and more flexible so its use in battle was simpler, the new technology was called the "Shortbow".

As Otto saw that raising the education of his people had such benefits he advised the monks in his territory to educate the people and teach them the principles of what they called "The Seven Liberal Arts".

In Ottos family there were also some things going on. Ottilo had adopted to the life with the monks so good, that he was called a bookworm by other family members. He used every free minute he had to go to the library of the monastery and study old books. Otto was very happy, that Ottilo had adopted to his new role so good.

bookworm.jpg

Meanwhile Bernhard, who still was under the tutorage of his father one day came to the count and wanted to know, why he has to try so hard his whole live when he has to die in the end anyway. While Otto himself didnt really know if his child wasnt right there, he told Bernhard that we have to achieve things in life and help others , as this is a test of good which determines if we will end up in hell or heaven. Also he told that you can gain so much already in this life that you can enjoy when you work hard.
After all Otto didnt want his most gifted son to get lazy in his young years, and it seems Bernhard understood his intensions.

wealldie.jpg

And then one day Otto had a strange dream: He was flying high above Bavaria and when he looked down he could see his county and its neighbours.
It was a nice view but then he heard something...ding...ding...ding...it was a metallic sound and suddenly virtually saw the giant hammers working all over the other counties and improving the infrastructure of all of them. And in the middle there was Niederbayern...and it was quiet and nothing was moving.
Otto didnt sleep much that night, and early the next morning he called his wife: "Haziga , we have to do something to be able to compete with the other reigns in the future...how much money do we have?"
"Well about 7 times as much as when you gave me your treasure."
"WHAT!!!! So that should easily be enough, why didnt you invest the money?"
"Well you said i should keep an eye on it, nothing else..."
"Oh you women are so dumb...well anyway...what could we build with the money, it has to be something that fits our couny perfectly, what is our county known for?"
"Well basically we only have a few farms in a big forest..."
"Thats it..the forest, we gonna build a forestry, it shall be the first step to a propsering county and make it easier to build further improvements", Otto decided.
And one year later Niederbayerns forestry started its production....

While Otto was very happy with the progress of his younger sons, Ekkehard showed more and more signs, that he just couldnt bear the responsibility that comes with being a first born son. He stilled tried to please everybody and especially his father the best he could, but as he saw that he didnt get the deserved praise for it he more and more isolated himself. You barely could see him talk to anyone, he just left his room in the morning to practice and learn and immediately closed the door behind him after his duties were over again. You never could see him laugh or even smile and his constant worries even seemed to affect him physically, as he was always seen with dark rings under his eyes.
When Ekkehard reached his 16th birthday even Otto noticed something was wrong with him.
So Otto decided there was only one way to cheer him up: He had to marry.
Perhaps a wife would manage to get him out of his shell again, and if not, well perhaps she could at least give birth to some grandchildren and keep the Wittelsbachs alive. She might even bring along some money.
So Otto briefly told Ekkehard about his plans, and as Otto had already decided not to have Ekkehard a word in this he started to look for possible brides for Ekkehard.
Thats was easier decided then done...
First he tried to find daughters of local noble families, perhaps in the distant future this would result in a heritage, that would strenghten the power of his family in Bavaria. But the reigning Nordheim family didnt have any daughters that were not married yet, and Otto saw the Nordheims more as rivals then as future parts of the family.
So Otto extended his search to the Southern parts of the Empire, called Italy. There were a lot of rich families that could have some daughters to bring in some money to Niederbayern.
But time went by and the only women he could find where all about double the age of his son. Even if that wouldnt have bothered him too much, they where only out of low noble families and he wanted his son to marry up the ladder not down...
So Otto had to look elsewhere again. But there was not much left to search for he thought. But one day he heard a rumour , that people were already making jokes of him because he wanted his son to marry into a glorious family and couldnt even find a daughter of a count for his Ekkehard.
"He wants him to marry into a palace and only has a hen cage to offer", word was on the street. Even his wife one day said: "Well perhaps we should just marry him to a local noble woman, you did it also and surely are not disappointed. We will just have to accept that we cant marry our son to a princess out of the royal family of France or England, because we are only a simple countal family."
"Thats it", Otto shouted, "France and England".
We may not get a royal wife for Ekkehard but there are surely a lot of noble women at the courts of these Kingdoms. There must be one for Ekkehard, too.
So the search continued in France and to put it short...it was not successful.
Now the last chance was the english court, but things didnt look too good there, too. Otto was so disappointed that everything was unimportant for him now, and he tried a last an very unreasonable attempt.
He offered a marriage between his son and the oldest sister of the King of England, Robert de Normandie. Her name was Gundred, and she was only 16, just as Ekkehard was.. Of course he knew there was not much chance that this marriage would have any chance of happening, but he was so desperate that he just tried it. Surely Ekkehard was only the son of a poor count who already fell into a depression at his young age, but Gundred had some issues, too.
She wasnt really a beauty as she had a genetic defect, that effected in a syndrom called "Harelip", a deformation of the upper lip. That also had the consequence, that she didnt trust other people very much as she was always in fear of being attacked by other people for her physical shortcoming.
So there was a slim chance the Wittelsbachs could bond with a royal family.

robertdenorm.jpg

And the nearly impossible happened:

marriageacc.jpg

The oldest sister of the King of England would be the new wife of Ekkehard, son of Otto I. , Count of Niederbayern.

ekkehardstressed.jpg

gundred.jpg

The celebrations that took place were enourmous (at least for a little couny like Niederbayern) as the brother of Gundred insisted to pay them. A wish Otto I. had no hesitation to grant.

Only the new couple was rarely seen at the festivities, and Otto didnt know if their issues would bond the two together in the future and help them to overcome them or if they would stumble in overcoming their problems.

If the worst case should happen, there still always was Bernhard and Ottilo as the future hope of the family, but Otto was the only one that had thoughts like that at the moment.
And these thoughts also were overwhelmed by the thought that Ekkehard had really married into a royal family. This must be sign, that the Wittelsbachs were on their way to something special.

To guarantee Ekkehard could support himself and his wife he was also appointed the new marshall of Niederbayern, as this position had been vacant.

Gundred was appointed Spy Master of Niederbayern, as Otto thought her quiet being and trusting no one would serve her very good for this position.

That of course meant that Georg now was released of all his responsibility in the county. Otto thanked him for his services and promised him to keep a spot for him at his court.

After this highlight in Wittelsbach family history Ottos focus was on his county again. In 1071 he was able to strengthen his army by buying soft leather armours for his men and improved their strenght further by letting them train ways to use a tactic that takes advantage of the terrain when attacking. A year later the wise people of Niederbayern gained a technology that allowed them to build a tile-factory and the building of this factory was immediately begun. This would help to make Niederbayern wealthier and speed up the completion of further buildings.

In 1073 Ottos 2nd and favourite son Bernhard reached the age of 16 and became eligible for a position at the court and a marriage. Before Otto could make any decision on these matters Bernhard wanted to become chancellor.
Otto was alittle shocked by this message as he wanted him to become his marshall, but he gave him the position, as he didnt want to upset him. Only days later he would of course assign him as marshall and the old marshall Ekkehard as chancellor.

bernhardchallenging.jpg

edufinishbernh.jpg

The big looser in this intrigue was Ursula. She thought she didnt deserve to be treated like that and left without a position after serving Otto so loyally.
She became very depressed and barely was to get out of her bad mood again.
Otto felt sorry for her, but he had to look for the best of his sons in the first place.

To serve this he now had to look for a wife for his 2nd son. But the bride market in Europe seemed to even have gotten worse since he tried to find a wife for Ekkehard. Especially the lack of young brides provided a problem that could not be overcome by Otto. So he decided to at least get a prestigious wife for his beloved son Bernhard. He didnt completely like this as he thought Bernhard would have the best assets to bring the Wittelsbach family to future glory and therefor should at least have one son.
But when he found out that the aunt of the Duke of Saxony was looking to marry a noble man of the Empire, he asked the Duke if he would accept the marriage between her and Bernhard.
As his aunt Ida was already 41 years old, which was more than double the age of Bernhard, and surely wouldnt have much better options the Duke of Saxony accepted.

marrbernh.jpg

idabillung.jpg

This meant the Wittelsbachs very now related to the English Royal family and to one of the most prestigious duchal families in the empire.
Otto knew that the chance of getting an heir out of this relationship was quite slim because of the age of the bride, but young age of Bernhard gave him good chances for a second marriage after the death of his wife.
Also Ida had been chancellor of Saxony and Otto decided to use her experience and appointed her as chancellor of Niederbayern, leaving his oldest son Ekkehard as simple courtier. It looked like Ekkehards future got worse everyday. Otto just hoped he wouldnt end up like Ursula. Her depression ended up in Georg finding her one day hanging from the ceiling of her room. Her feeling of uselessness had driven her into suicide. Poor Ursula...

urseldies.jpg

After this shock things even got worse for the Wittelsbachs.
After some happy news that Bernhard had finished his education and now was known as one of the best knights in the whole Empire, which made Otto very proud, and the finding of a new technology that made it possible to build new roads just like the Romans did in Niederbayern before, and which seemed a task for the future, destiny struck hard again:

An evil plague was spreading in Niederbayern sine 1074 and many people were dying after having dark spots all over their body. The general life and economy of Niederbayern was hit very hard by this. People called the plague "The small pox."

pox.jpg

pox2.jpg

Otto tried to help his people but really couldnt do much even if he exhausted himself to find a cure for the plague.

Just in these horrible times Ekkehard approached Otto publicly and said he wanted to have the position as Steward, that was occupied by his mother.

Otto was upset. How dare he? The people were suffering and all Ekkehard could think of was his own well being. And then he tried to challenge his own mother, too, and didnt respect the decisions of his father...
No, Otto didnt want to take this any more. Finally admitting that he didnt think to much of his first born son he said he should leave his court and try to find a position somewhere else. If he really was that good he could prove there that he was the right heir for Niederbayern.
Ekkehard didnt expect that...but there was no way back...

ekkechallenge.jpg

His tries to get a position in another court resulted in his new nephew, the Duke of Saxony granting him a courtal spot in one of his Bishophries, the Bishopry of Bremen. While Ekkehard tried to adopt to life there he left his wife behind in Niederbayern, because she still served as Spy Master to Otto.
Ekkehard seemed to adopt very well and soon after his arrival was tipped to be successor of the Bishop by some people, but when the Bishop died only DAYS after Ekkehards arrival, he couldnt become Bishop because of his lack of ecclesial education. So when the new Bishop was chosen Ekkehard had to leave Bremen again and returned to Niederbayern. Otto seemed to have perfectly proven his point in this situation, but was a little disappointed Ekkehard couldnt come to glory elsewhere.

Meanwhile Ottos 3rd son finished his education. He had read a lot of scripts of ancient "orators" while he was learning with the monks and had become a charismatic negotiator. So he decided not to stay in the monastery but serve his father with his skills. Otto was very happy to have such a skilled person as son and appointed him the position that had been occupied by Ida Billung before: Chancellor of Niederbayern.

As Otto now had dealt with several issues of family and court he now wanted to use the stabilyity in his lands to finally prove his value as a leader of an army. He immediately got the perfect chance for this when in 1064 Emperor Heinrich declared war on Mecklenburg, to expand the Empire to the North. As the Emperor didnt call for Ottos army to take place in this war, Otto declared war on the pagan territory of Mecklenburg himself and moved his 677 men north.

After his arrival in a province held by Mecklenburg called Werle he joined forces with the imperial army and the joined forces didnt need much time to take the province and see it as part of the Empire from that time on.

WarMeck-1.jpg

battlewerle.jpg

werlevic.jpg

siegewerle.jpg

Having liberated this province Otto moved on to Rostock, which was already under Siege by an imperial army, too and fell to the attackers soon after.

Some minor battles followed in which Otto or the imperial army easily defeated the enemy.

werlevic3.jpg

As Otto saw that the Emperor would easily win this war now and he didnt have any interest of claiming some land in the North himself he allowed his troops to leave his army and made peace with Mecklenburg.
Soon after the Emperor reached a peace agreement too, which saw the newly conquered lands go to the Duke of Saxony. Of course Otto was very happy his new family member could strenghten his power.
Things looked even brighter when Otto returned to Niederbayern and saw that immidiately after he had left the pox were forced back, as with over 700 men serving in the army out of Niederbayern it was easier to isolate the sick people.

Sad to see mental illness affecting the Wittlesbach's this early on, hopefully they can shake it off. Glad you did an AAR with them, and I like that you don't try to conquer the world in the first half-century.

Terrible thing to have good courtiers die off in game events... Too bad there aren't more positions.

Nice AAR though. Keep up the good work, as well as the usage of pictures and descriptions for your technological advances.

Having seen such victories in war and liking it much more than the daily work in his county , Otto didnt feel very comfortable and always had an inner wish of leaving all the work behind and fight again. So he didnt feel good anymore and the daily work became more and more of a burden and stress for him.

Meanwhile his son Bernhard, while being out hunting encountered a giant boar and brave as he was, the Niederbayern marshall attacked it immidiately and killed it. From this day on this heroic was told again and again throughout the county and beyond and gave Bernhard some reputation among other nobles which from this day on saw him as reckless and brave soldier and hunter.

His oldest brother Ekkehard finished his education by that time and the psychological problems he had resulted in him being a trained Knight without any other strenghts that were important for a future Count. People in Niederbayern called him the "misguided warrior".

Count Otto also was introduced into a new way of building churches which the engineers called "Basilican structures." He surely would look into this as soon as he could afford the building of a church.

Let's hope its Barnard for the succession- I just had a misguided warrior inherit in my games. His stats are 8/0/3/2 His brothers are 20/8/6/10 I could've changed the succession law, but it felt so unfair. Good luck!

As things in Niederbayern were very quiet again Otto decided to begin the search for a bride for Ottilo, his youngest son. After an education with monks he had decided not to follow the way of the Lord and so now was eligible for a marriage.
Otto already knew how hard it was to find good wifes for his children, and it surely wouldnt be easy with the son who was only 3rd in the line of succesion. So with his other sons still having no kids he decided that Ottilo should get a wife that was still young and so had the potential to carry the name Wittelsbach into another generation. Immediately he thought of a young lady he met while he was at the newly formed court in Rostock.
She was a clever women and still very young, everything he could wish for, and as she was out of a minor noble family not much effort was needed to have her elders agree to the marriage.
Heilwiwa von Steutzlingen now was the new wife of Ottilo and her cleverness immediately let Otto appoint her as spymaster, taking the position from Gundred.

In a short period of time Heilwiwa gave birth to 3 children which Otto was very proud of, the only problem was they were all girls and no potential successors for the House of Wittelsbach.

The biggest tragedy was that Heilwiwa also expected another child, which Otto thought surely would be the long expected heir but the boy was born dead.

Shortly after Ottilos marriage another decision concerning the family bonds had to be made as there still was no heir born and more options became available when Bernhards wife Ida died. So the short connection with the Billung family wasnt very successfull.

But Otto just couldnt find a wife that rose up to his expectations, which wasnt much of a wonder as he approached women like the Duchess of Toskana and the daughter of the Duke of Bourgougne. Somehow Otto seemed to want to much to soon and as he finally married Bernhard to Emilia von Franken, which was the former stewart of the HRE and Aunt of the Emperor Heinrich von Franken he surely had served his ambitions to marry his sons into great families, but at the price of having his son married with a 58 year old, but surely wouldnt do much to keep the Wittelsbachs themselves alive.

In the same year , it was 1077 after the death of our Lord, the pope finally decided to liberate the Holy land from the heathens and called out a crusade to Antioch, which should be the first step to liberating all of the places Jesus and the first christians had left their mark on.

This was the chance Otto had been waiting for so long. He saw himself as a christian leader through and through and didnt hesitate a day to put together an army and fulfill his holy duty. He could raise nearly a thousand men and began his march to the Holy Land, which was basically a march to the southeast as he had heard somewhere there it should be.
After some weeks of marching he got more and more information about where Antioch was and even managed to find out that the Byzantine empire really existed. One day he arrive in the capital of this great Empire and even managed to meet the Emperor, who could give him detailed information where Antioach was. Otto also was very happy that the Byzantine Emperor also was in a war with the heathens.

Also news from the HRE had arrived that the vast majority of German rulers also joined the crusade. Otto was sure that the heathens would be taught their final lesson now and marched on to the East.

The crusade is quite the opportunity for the Wwittlesbach's to rise in the ranks of the nobility. They realy must find an heir though.
