I don't think that doing better than real life Ottomans would be possible:

Ottoman_Empire_Map_1359-1856.jpg

Not that fast, at least. To do it one would have to break truces repeatedly and they would incur in huge aggressive expansion anyway, not to mention overextension.

Or what about Spain?

charlesVglobalemp.png

Not only you have to colonize and conquer all of southern and central America, but you would also have to inherit Flanders, Bourgogne, get in PU with Austria, conquer Lombardy, become HRE, several territories in North Africa, annex Naples and later get in a PU with Portugal.

The fact that I can't really follow history or do as good as they actually did is reason enough for me not to play Spain. I try to play Ottomans from time to time only to be angry when I can't annex / vassalize the Mameluks in a single war. As for Spain I don't really play them, I find it too hard. It's almost an impossible task.

In contrast, many countries are way too easy to accomplish this with, including Brandenburg and Sweden. I guess it evens out.

The Ottomans is easily doable if you set up the triggers to annex the Mamluks in one go. Spain though probaly not getting a PU over a Habsburg would require you to kill your own dynasty off whilst in marriage with Austria whilst also having enough prestige that they dont PU you. Then they would need to have no/weak heir which is more difficult over Austria as they get bonuses to heirs I think.

Native Americans?

I only tried the Inca, my expansion was slower but I managed to reach the historical extension of the Inca empire a few decades late.

Anyway even if you manage to annex the Mamluks you would still have to conquer / vassalize most of Arabia, North Africa, Hungary and Crimea in more or less a century (as well as finishing conquest of Balkans, Greece and Anatolia ofc).

Albania I don't think anyone could survive as Albania as long as they did in history without migrating across the map to somewhere else entirely.

The one thing that annoys me most is that you can't get a PU over England as a Dutch Republic.

Other then that, I think I 'slightly' outdo historical expansion (especially with Castile, but I've played that a bit too much).

The odd thing with Brandenburg is that, while it is certainly possible to do better than they did historically, it's basically impossible to do so in they way they did historically.

England. It's quite hard for them to replicate their 1821 empire.
Any small state which resisted foreign intervention during the game's period.

This is for the AI. The player can easily go above historical achievements with a decent knowledge of the game.

By 1821, perhaps. Certainly not if you try to be as fast as they were in actual history with Ottomans and Spain.

Considering that many of those were vassals, I think that a EU4 Ottoman empire in 1566 can be definitely comparable to the one in real life.

Spain requires PU luck.

Anyway even if you manage to annex the Mamluks you would still have to conquer / vassalize most of Arabia, North Africa, Hungary and Crimea in more or less a century (as well as finishing conquest of Balkans, Greece and Anatolia ofc).

Its actually a mamluk event, the triggers are roughly:
Ottomans, Mamluks, Persia all share a border
Persia owns a port province
Ottomans, Mamluks, Perisa, Venice not in a coalition
Mamluk, Persia Venice all -ve opinion of Ottomans
Year 1500-1520

The exact conditions are in the wiki but it gives you a CB to full annex the Mams in one go if you can beat them + Persia + Venice. If you win just release the Mams as a vassal an you are good to go.

Getting Burgundy is pretty much impossible (requires Burgundy to have no royal marriages with a neighbour and the HRE to be at war with Burgundy or really small), but its pretty easy to argue that Charles V despite being Emperor didn't rule Austria.

That map of America is discoveries and claims, not everywhere Spain was actually present.

Real life empires can expand very fast but very difficult to hold on to.
EU4 empires expand slowly but are ultra stable.
By end of game player controlled nations will always do better than history... So i guess that even things out.

@Oblio: It's impossible to vassalize Hungary in a single war (heck, even in two), it's probably impossible to vassalize Tunis, it's impossible to vassalize Qara Qoyunlu. And besides, you'd incur in huge aggressive expansion penalties, putting you at war with pretty much the whole world.

WIth Ottomans annexing Egypt before 1519 is not hard at all. Even with 3-4 wars it isn't that hard as long as you pay close attention. First war at about 1450, ideally you will grab the non-Mameluk Syrian core first and release Syria. You take Gaza and the other province to cut off Palestine/Syria from Egypt, use the rest of war score to either grab Jerusalem and feed provinces to Syria or just grab Alexandria even without the claim. Simply because in next war everything in Levant will be super cheap to grab as it will count as overseas. So second war is launched with conquer Egypt (in the meantime fabricate claims on Palestinian provinces because you will lose the conquer Levant mission claims if you feed anything to Syria and besides you want the conquer Egypt mission) and you return the remaining Syrian cores to your vassal, grab the claims you fabricated in Palestine (both of these should be dirt cheap in WS) and use the rest of WS to ideally get a land connection from Gaza to Alexandria by taking the Nile delta provinces. It should be doable to annex within 50 years of start without any major exploits. And 75 is easy to achieve without much stress, matching historical annexation date. You just need to plan to start wars as soon as truce timer ends and everything after the first war is trivial and mostly just waiting for sieges to complete.
