I'd like to put roads next to each other, because it is really possible. I mean, sometimes I can understand that this:
0F2D63D05E7A63EE3EE6CCDD98C51445F3D1400D

doesn't work cuz of reasons but.... than I try the rails and see this is impossible as well:

Kind of...odd... don't you think? So please, someone fix this!

I think your issue (at least in the road picture) is that your roads are too close together (i.e. space being occupied). It looks like the sidewalks would overlap. The roads are not exactly one square wide. Just remember, when you do get them "just" far enough apart that they are laying side-walk to sidewalk, you will not be able to upgrade the road with decorations as they make the road even wider. The resolution would be to place them just a couple of pixels wider apart. For intersections between the roads, move the roads apart slightly so you will have enough space to place a connecting road between them OR bring them together into the same intersection.

For your rails issue, it looks like this is a different issue - you are trying to connect two strands of parallel rails and the connecting piece is too short (distance too short). Your rail segment between the two strands needs to be longer. (possibly further to the right in you picture underneath the rail bridge)?

They do not overlap. 2 way roads are 2 spaces wide, you can use the grid to make roads next to eachother:

By some sort of miracle I was able to connect the roads as well. Something that usually is literally impossible, even on seemingly flat terrain!

There are a few things you can do, which also allow you to make roads like gotaname shows... but it requires playing around a little with roads.

So for instance, to make this, similar to gotaname's:

or

Draw one road using the grid.
Draw a second parallel road using the freehand tool, which will allow you to make it parallel and close enough that you barely see the join.

Now to create the points where they merge, you can't do it with the normal road most of the time, you will get space occupied messages, but there are a few tricks...The rest of the images I will put in a spoiler to keep the thread short.

Can't be done, or so it seems, although sometimes it will connect but will bulge out massively.

Using the highway ramp road piece, make the connection trying to keep the curve so it doesn't bulge outwards too much.

Next, upgrade the other road section so that is also a highway road piece

Now, upgrade the curved section back to a normal road

And finally, for some reason, you are now able to upgrade the original straight section back to a normal road:
Resulting in the first screenshot I posted.

But having a divided (for real, not the 4 lane option right now) road that also curves is basically impossible. You can draw straight ones just fine on flat terrain, but if you try it on non-flat terrain or if your road curves, good luck, you'll be all over the place and need a lot of space.

I don't disagree with it being all over the place and needing more space, but its not impossible, but not that easy either, well thats if you want no gap. If you want a space of 1 square (or 2/3) then the freeform tool is very useful for drawing the second road since it can snap to the zoneable grid squares of the first road, allowing you to trace it very easily.

I use them quite a lot myself to avoid a divide in standard avenues.
