I bought HOI2 back when it first came out but never really took the time to learn it. After getting bored with my other games (Battles in Normandy, Steel Panthers, Highway to the Reich, Flashpoint Germany, etc etc) I decided to give it another go.

I read through the manual and started to get the mechanics of the game. So I did some searching online and found EU2. I bought Crown of the North on a whim since I liked HOI2.

EU2 is a great game! I kept getting my butt kicked around for a bit but I am starting to get the hang of things. I really really wish I had a readable manual(if anyone can help me with that I would appreciate it) since the pdf is missing the odd pages. Strategy First doesnt list the game on their site anymore so there is no longer one hosted there.

I am wondering if I should pick up Victoria and Crusader Kings too. Then I would have all the games I ever needed.

You should definately get Vicky and CK as well.
I haven't played CK yet (I've had it since the day it was released) since I haven't had the time to, but it seems like a GREAT game so I'll try to soon... :)

I got the manual thanks for the link. Its a shame the one included with the game was messed up. I understand Paradox didnt do it though.

Heh I just realized I have never even installed the other game on the disc. I wonder if it is any good.

Ignore the manual whenever possible. It contains incorrect information, especially if you are playing v. 1.08. But it was incorrect even for 1.00.

There is a pretty good beginner's guide on the web from Fodoron. And the FAQ's here at this web site, if digested slowly, will help you a lot, especially the one on the economy and the one on diplomacy.

Have fun. :)

OK i know this is not on the topic of this thread but I am having a helluva time with this.

I am playing as Castile in the Grand Campaign. I made it to 1435 and completely took over Grenada back in the 1420s. I vassalized them and took their diplo relations to 200 through gifts. Now i want to Diplo Annex them but it wont give me the option. Is it because they have a permanent casus bellis on me? I know its been over 10 years and they like me enough to give me the option but....

Also I am curious as to how long it takes someone to play through this campaign. It took me almost 3 hours to make it 15 years lol.

you have to forceannex Granada completely.. ;)

You cannot dipploannex nations with whom you could not have entered into a royal marriage with...

Besides in the early game its much better for you to have Granada as a 1province vassal than to annex them....annexing them will:

- increase your stability cost by 100d *modifiers
- slightly increase your research cost since these are tied to nation size

and since Granada does not have your state culture or state religion it wont earn you that much income...(later on you will get an event to change culture, which will also enable you to convert them much easier!)

If u play using the recent betas each up to ten will also reduce your research and stability costs ....approximately "offsetting" the penalties for having low centralization.

Hell, the first years are the faster ones. Wait until you have 50 colonies, fleets and armies everywhere. :p I sometimes play a game in one month, and sometimes have several going on simultaneously. My Venetian game for the AAR in my signature has been going since November 2004, and we have only reached 1563 :D

EU2 has a lot of particular rules, and diplomacy is very confusing at first, especially diplo-annexation and diplo-vassalization. You will have to learn slowly. The economy also requires some learning to avoid being eaten by inflation and to become richer faster.

Download my guide from my signature. It is not 100% perfect but it will help you get around. Also when you are on-line you can check the EU2 Wiki. The FAQs are the best source for very precise information, but they are harder to digest.

Depending on where you live, there is a Strategy Pack 6 (It is available in North America and Australia to my knowledge). This has:
Victoria, EU2, EU2 Asia, HOI (not HOI2), Crown of the North and Two Thrones.
Pretty good value for money if you don't have a couple of these.

I once played 340 years as Russia in one night (less than 10 hours).
However, I never made it into the 19th century (always got bored by being too powerful before then) and only a few times into the 18th in the dozens of EU2 games that I have played so I can't really tell you how long it took me to play through an entire campaign.

(Similarly, I've never reached 1920 in Vicky, but I got to 1910 once :))

I don't know if the manual that you're talking about is the same one which came with my game. I picked up the Atari version, and it had an exact copy of the manual from the original EU. There's a lot of new stuff, that's just not covered (not that the original one was perfect either). It's really sad if they couldn't put togather a manual for the new game. That's a big part of what you're paying for.

Big part? Personally, i pay for the game :p

I do agree including an EU manual is bad though, even fraudulent.

However, it isn't a huge problem, as these forums are extremely useful.

So, leftie, read these forums to learn, especially the FAQ section(economy and diplomacy FAQ, as mentioned. For instance, your answer to your Granada question is in the diplomacy FAQ)

Victoria really lets you take control of a country, altering domestic migration pattern by manipulating classes and location of factories, good micromanagement. However, some people do not like the extra control.
As for CK, it is a fun, feel good game. Its full potential was not realized due to the debacle with Snowball, but it is can be exciting with its RPG elements.
