Wisdom speaks through the knife
an Antioch AAR by Raxstones

After spending weeks lost in the wonderful and cruel world of Crusader Kings 2 and reading lots of AAR's, I wanted to write one myself. I'm new at writing stories and at posting at paradox forum, so I hope I'm acting the right way. I hope you enjoy my story and please comment on both the story and my not so native language English. For the start of this story, I was fascinated by the first crusade and the siege of Antioch. this impenetrable stronghold was seized through luck and betrayal. After the siege, an artefact called the Holy lance was found within its walls giving the crusaders the morale boost they needed to continue their quest. In my story you'll be following the 'de Holand' bloodline, an unknown family of traders from guess where, Holland, who accidentally happen to inherit the principality of Antioch trough crusade. The main character is called Noah

Prologue

15 August 1096 – somewhere in Normandy
I will always remember this day, as I woke up as a man sentenced to dead and went to bed as a free man with a noble cause. “Wake up Noah” yelled the jailer, banging on the bars of my viewless prison cell. “This is the first day of the rest of your miserable life. All your sins will be forgiven if you choose to fight in heavens army. The pope called everyone to crusade. The holy father will forgive your pity soul if you wield your blade to fight those infidels.” I didn't hesitate and took the oath as soon as they released me. Afterwards I went on my knees thanking the clever bastard who started this war in gods name, followed by the now so precious word amen.

24 February 1997 – Constantinople
As a holy warrior I served under the banner of Robert the second, duke of Normandy. During the time we set up camp outside Constantinople, I met Bohemond de Hauteville, a son of a somewhat unimportant noble family. At first sight he looked like a cocky, arrogant warmonger, but after a good drink, some laughter and a brawl, I found out he was also cruel. Those traits suit me well, thus afterwards we became friends until death would separate us.

21 October 1097 – Antioch
Today we crossed the Iron bridge, a small Muslim stronghold on a river cross, and are setting up camp near the walls of Antioch. The walls of this fortress are build to withstand a twenty thousand swords strong army. Luckily enough we have at least a thousand more men so it will probably take a few months to conquer.

3 May 1098 – Antioch
We were wrong. Those infidels do have brains and were smart enough to trick all Christians into leaving the fortress by having them dig trenches outside the walls. With them we have at least a five hundred extra mouths to feed and we barely have enough food for ourselves.

2 June1998 – Antioch
I'm writing from within the walls of Antioch as we speak. Bohemond, my dear friend and brother in arms did manage to bribe an Armenian guard named Firuz to surrender his tower. We entered the city by night with a twelve men squad and opened the eastern gate. It was a bloody massacre but it was well worth it. Due to the importance of de Hauteville his acts, he gained the title of Duke of Antioch. Tomorrow will be the official inauguration.

15 July 1999 - Antioch
Today there was news from Jerusalem that the city is finally in hands of the crusaders. This should have been a day of joy and happiness knowing the infidels have been driven from the lands that truly belongs to us. It makes me sad to write that my brother and liege has died. He didn't have any sons or daughters, so he left a testimony that says that I'm his successor. The task I have to bear will be hard, but I will do it with pride. Did I mention that the death of my friend was rather suspicious? They asked me if I by accident would have known anything about it. Of course I didn't. I would never murder my brother.

Chapter 1: conquest and counter conquest

Chapter 1, part 1: conquest and counter conquest

21 July 1099 – Antioch
This morning a female appeared in court, carrying a child. I vaguely remember her face from a wild night in one of the local taverns. That night I ended up tumbling with one of cities finest prostitutes while my brother de Hauteville ended up between the legs of a hideous dwarf. One of cities least finest. I still wonder if it was an accident or that he had an obscure fetish for tiny ladies with monstrous faces. Maybe it reminded him of home, or his own mother? “Sir Noah of Antioch, I beg you to take this child you put into me nine months ago”, begged the woman with tears in her eyes. Although I loved to see her begging, enjoying it in my own cruel way, I was determined to take the child and raise it as mine. Her name is Emma and when she comes of age I will marry her to a King, or even better, the Emperor. But first I had to find myself a wife before the pope would excommunicate me for being a sinner.

15 August 1099
A Month ago at the funeral of my dearest friend, a family of Sicilian nobles attended. They were loyal friends to the house of de Hauteville and arrived in the holy lands to mourn Bo and secure a continuous friendship though me as Bohemonds' heir. And there, on that funeral, I met her, my future wife. A sixteen year old girl, light skin, dark of hair. After the funeral I approached her during the banquet. Barely two hours later we were full faced liplocked to each other, so hornified as we were. She's the best thing that ever happened to me. Three weeks ago I proposed to her and her family agreed. Her name is Umfreda...

4 August 1100
Last twelve months we started preparing our defenses against an inevitable Sunni invasion. Building an archery and strengthening the nearby city of Latakia with some proper walls. Our efforts didn't pass by unnoticed. The pope did sent his support in converting the local population to the one and true faith. And I did my part, by violently repression the Sunni rebellions. They call me 'the cruel' behind my back, thinking I will never find out. Tomorrow some Sunni heads are gonna roll. I promise you!

Today god thanked me, for converting the populace, by granting me a son. The priests tried to convince me that I should name him William. “Christ no”, I said. “I'm not going to give him the name of some holy English sissy. His name will be Geoffrey, a proper masculine name for our future leader.”

14 October 1100
I always liked women, but this girl in particular. Her name is Mabel and she recently joined my court. She isn't beautiful nor young, but she has something. Something I can't describe with words. I'm craving for her and nothing can stop me from wanting her. Tonight when my wife sleeps, I'll sneak into her living quarters.

12 January 1102 – Alexandretta
As I was inspecting my stronghold in Alexandretta, a messenger approached me. “My liege, I just returned from the mountainous area of Kartli. They are currently rebelling against their liege, the duchy of Aleppo, our neighboring infidel country.” As I was already planning to invade the county of Archa, a Aleppan province, I decided that this would be the right moment to raise my levies. I also did send out an official declaration of war this afternoon, sending a horse with the heads of fifteen Sunni infidels with a note attached to them saying that the number of heads I'm sending represent the number of times I will stab my sword through the Beylerbey of Aleppo. With regards of course.

6 may 1102
My second son is finally born and will stand at the side of his brother and future liege Geoffrey. My second son will be known as Noffrey. Although he'll always be in the shadow of his big brother, he's going to be a man with great ambitions. I'll make sure of that!

12 June 1102 - Antioch
The Swiss company, a fearsome band of mercenaries finally arrived to join our De Jure war over Archa. With over three thousand warriors at my side I can smell victory. Tomorrow we will leave Antioch for the infidel lands under my superior leadership.

19 August 1102 – Hama (Aleppo)
After a march of eleven days we arrived at the gates of Archa. We left a small part of our army there to prepare for the siege while the rest of us marched towards Hama, a neighboring province. Rumors said that the grand army of the Beylerbey will rendezvous there, so this will be the chance to destroy and scatter them.

At last our to grand armies met on the plains of Hama. Three thousand of my man against a two thousand swords strong infidel army. I will lead my men into victory and banish those infidels the the inner circles of hell. We will charge tonight!

Are you going to remain the Duke of Antioch for the entirety of the game? I ask because, even more than usual, a Christian in the Holy Land needs to be King fast. Holy Orders are Duchy-level titles, so you can't have them as vassals unless you crown yourself King.

The main goal is to keep the title of Duke of Antioch. The rest depends on the nature of the main character. Is he ambitious he will try to become king of Syria. Is he zealous, Sunni heads are gonna roll or perhaps he takes on the orthodox church. But with all the islamic countries on the border there is a chance he will be driven out of Antioch, and what will happen then? Normally I have big goals, that take generations of planning. This time the main goal can change depending on the protagonist. For me there is no point in writing if I already know the end beforehand(I play while I write). I like suprises
