So I'm discovering transliteration is a pain. Specifically what to do with semicolons in Syriac Aramaic. I found three sites sites, one a simple dictionary site where I'm cherry picking Eastern Syriac terms to the best of my ability (prefering Greek influenced rather than Turkish if possible). Its not very historical, quite frankly I'm doing this mostly because its frustrating to simply be called "King".
The other source I found is simply a concise transliteration source. Which proofed confusing until I figured out I needed to be looking from right to left...
The third source is just more phonetics.
Dictionary: http://www.assyrianlanguages.org/sureth/index.php
Romanization guide: https://www.loc.gov/catdir/cpso/romanization/syriac.pdf
Phonetics, ect.: http://www.omniglot.com/writing/syriac.htm

People are more than welcome to make sense of this. Figured since I was doing this I might as well share, unfortunately I really should have done a better job of saving my sources, but I have a few bookmarked as far as individual titles go. I used a lot of personal discretion, some things such as county didn't have a direct comparision. However, "Im'prator" was a pleasant surprise. However, Temple holding localizations don't work. Can't figure it out.

Temple holders: http://www.assyrianlanguages.org/sureth/dosearch.php?searchkey=8497&language=id
Baron: http://www.assyrianlanguages.org/sureth/dosearch.php?searchkey=719&language=id
Duchy: http://www.assyrianlanguages.org/sureth/dosearch.php?searchkey=32718&language=id

Kingdom: http://www.assyrianlanguages.org/sureth/dosearch.php?searchkey=7898&language=id
Duke: http://www.assyrianlanguages.org/sureth/dosearch.php?searchkey=3314&language=id
City: http://www.assyrianlanguages.org/sureth/dosearch.php?searchkey=7161&language=id

Possible options:
http://www.assyrianlanguages.org/sureth/dosearch.php?searchkey=768&language=id
http://www.assyrianlanguages.org/sureth/dosearch.php?searchkey=9637&language=id

In general I'm just trying to figure out how to get rid of the semicolons with phonetic transliterations.

I also played around with retinues, but was a tiny bit lazy. I based it it on ancient Assyrian shock-and-awe type deal. I was tempted to mix Horse Archers or Archers and Heavy Infantry, but I wasn't sure about weights and balance and was afraid of making things too OP. The name was just something I found early on when searching and I just rolled with it.

In general I'm just trying to figure out how to get rid of the semicolons with phonetic transliterations
The semicolons are sometimes used to express a longer vowel sound (for example in phonetics), so I would go with either a double vowel or a vowel with a macron (a: = aa = ā), I see you sometimes have used the tilde for the same ("mal'kú tã" in your list, while my transliteration effort gave "malkú tā").

I tried doing this as well a while ago. Count and Baron titles are just generic noble titles I found and so yours may be better, but I used Résh for Duke because (according to Wikipedia) the ruler of Palmyra during the Roman period was known as the Ras before it was upgraded to king, so I figured the Syriac translation for the title fit as the title a step down from king. And apparently at least one Palmyran ruler used the title King of Kings, so I used that for Emperor. Since I can't find anything on Assyrian states after that I don't know if using Greek-derived titles is more accurate for the game's time period though.

Well i'm still of the opinion that the closest we can get to the CK2 period, preferably in the actual CK2 period, the better. One of the main targets of SWMH is to fix anachronisms as you guys should be well aware of by now.

If there is none available for the given culture (because they were not rulers in the period) it is not of make or break importance that titles end up being Greek or Turkish/Arabic-derived translated into Assyrian, if it means we can give the Assyrians some well-needed flavour.

ETA: But it's good that you guys are giving me input to base the final titles on. I love it

Yeah, I used the tilde only because I couldn't find the "ā" anywhere. It refused to come up at all.

I agree, but generally I prefer native terms, especially if you can make some sort of case for them, just because it's more unique than just having a lot of these cultures be full of Douks and Emirs or whatever. Obviously it can't be helped for a lot of them (aside from king and baron all my Coptic localizations are Greek just because there's no native descriptions of any sort of state organization) but as long as you aren't calling up titles that obviously haven't been used in millennia (or won't be used for millennia) I don't think it's a problem; at the end of the day it's unfortunately fantasy and no matter what gets chosen it's 1000x more probable than the generic English localizations.

Thank you for these! I was leaning towards Greek origin ones myself.

No problem. It'd probably be easier just to use those and have some pretense of a defined hierarchy rather than just arbitrarily sorting generic titles for nobles but honestly I really prefer native language titles.

Actually would you mind sharing how you even got overlines? The tilde as I've said was a comprimise.

No problem. It'd probably be easier just to use those and have some pretense of a defined hierarchy rather than just arbitrarily sorting generic titles for nobles but honestly I really prefer native language titles.

I'd love to see your Coptic localisations too. I obviously need to add some titles for them as well.

And i'm having a bit of a problem finding workable transliteration tools for them.

I think i have a relatively settled list of titles for the Assyrians now. Just need to scoop up prince and prince_female from your list

I'm equally curious, I just spent a few hours getting localizations done for Assyrians and I'm correcting some things. XD Right now I have multiple prince/princess titles since I use Rank&File, however for my heir apparents/direct progeny I'm using Bar'maal kaa for prince and Malkthu'ní thaa for prince_female.

I couldn't find any tools either, so I just transliterated each letter. Obviously I'm a lot more confident with the Greek terms than the attempted Coptic terms.

So I ended up using a mix of Sureth, Kurdish, and Pahlavi. For many X_female I used Kurdish when possible, followed by Pahlavi if no Kurdish term was found. I did the same with both count and count_female, since I figured I'd pretend some loan words of nearby people would occur.

It looks a bit inconsistent and I had the option of using Arabic loan words that would "mesh" better. But overall I wanted to emphasize the non-Islamicized nature, hence Pahlavi rather than Parsi/Farsi. Since its a pure fantasty I'm rather happy with just having complete results.

I'm taking a look at your Coptic suggestions. I stumbled onto some Old Nubian titles (Songoj, Ouran, Ourou, Ourououn Ouran) and i figured i might as well add them to the list

It looks like there is another Coptic word for Pagarch, besides the direct transliteration. I keep running into a transliteration into English from Coptic that reads Ape

Also i keep running into a similar word for King as the Nubian one. Ouro. The nubians probably inherited the Coptic title into their vocabulary. And Queen is referred to as Tiouro

I didn't find any Coptic words for Pagarch but if that's the case it'd definitely be better than just using the Greek word.

According to wikipedia Ouro/Uro/Rro are all derived from Pharaoh, with later Coptic writers mistakenly thinking the initial part was a masculine definite marker and assumed the base word was Ouro. Tiouro is just Ouro with a feminine definite marker, so to be consistent it would probably be best to use Piouro and Tiouro or have both just be Ouro. I don't think this carries over to Nubian though.

Sorry, I meant specifically regarding the female version of the word, I know Nubian also uses Ourou for king but since the Coptic word for queen is based on Coptic grammatical articles I don't know if it would apply to Nubian, and the only time the word for queen is mentioned in that link is as Basilissa.

That makes sense, it definitely looks like it fits the "king of kings" motif.

I hadn't thought that far ahead for Nubian. For now i had just added Male titles
