Windows 8.1 "Failed to Create Graphics Device"

So, while I was sleeping last night, Windows forced me to update to Windows 8.1. Crusader King 2 has always worked more or less for me but, now when I try to boot it up, it says, "Failed to create a graphics device. Exiting." How do I fix this?

Please try a full clean re-install:

- move any valued save games elsewhere
- "delete local content" in Steam-CK2
- opt into the 2.2.0.4 beta in the Steam beta tab
- manually delete all files and folders left under Steam/CK2 AND Documents/Paradox/CK2
- re-install game in Steam, run a Steam Verify when done.

If that doesn't help, Please post a dxdiag.txt (you can delete everything after the end of the "Sound devices" section for brevity) and your Documents/CK2/settings.txt. From your Documents/Paradox/CK2/logs/ directory, post system.log . Open setup.log in notepad and search for 'checksum', post that line only here too please.

Thanks for trying to help, but after CK2 didn't work, I found out none of my games do.

I've had the same problem for just my paradox games for the last two days. I'm trying the re install but if that doesn't work I will send you the errors

i could not find the setting.txt file or my checksum this might have something to do with the re install but heres the other stuff

I've had the same problem

To clarify, you do also get a "Failed to create graphics device" error ?

I'd suggest a reinstall of directx from within the game folder.
Might be Win8.1 has trouble identifiying an old install of directx 9.0c, but wait with that until AndrewT has returned and has given his opinion.

edit: or a reinstallation of your graphics driver, but i don't know.

It could also be helpful to post the specific name of your HP comp, as searching for an HP ENVY TS 15 i7-4700MQ with 2.4GHz and HD Graphics 4600 didn't let me find
a product on the HP support page. Also hard to find by that.

edit2: Also check if Windows update has installed updates for NET and such.

Please go to C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\crusader kings ii\DX\ and run dxsetup.exe

If that doesn't help, please try installing:

First: http://www.microsoft.com/download/en/details.aspx?id=8328

Then: http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=35

(If that doesn't do anything then http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=8109 )

Then: visit the Windows Update site and allow it to apply all .NET updates/patches it wants to, for all .NET versions.

Ya i get a "failed to create a graphics device. exiting" error. I have tried all the driver updates and just tried everything andrew said to do.

My computer is a Product name: HP ENVY TS 15 Notebook PC

Ah , you have a NVIDIA GeForce GT 740M as well as your Intel in this machine, and its driver is out of date. Please update it

Then make sure the game is running on that card, not the Intel. This is done in the nVidia Control Panel, 3D settings area.

thanks guys it worked i thought i upgrade my nvidia graphics card recently but that was the issue

Oh, i just learned something new. I expected the nvidia card to be mentioned at some place in the dxdiag report, even if the driver is not updated.
Seems i was wrong. Should have mentioned it.
