Checking the dxdiags posted, what you could try is to update the sound drivers. I notice that they are from 2009 and updating them to the latest ones might help solving the problem.

Are other in-game sounds working correctly, and what if you 'fiddle' around with the audio sliders in the options menu? And are they back after a game restart?

The music works, and selecting armies sometimes seems fine, as does the effects when besieging a province. The biggest culprit are sounds such as the effect when clicking on a province, messing with the volume sliders doesn't seem to have any effect. They are generally working fine after the game is restarted but will mute after a short period.

A similar issue was happening to someone with HOI3 and they just resolved it by installing newer audio codecs

just be aware these are free but the installer will try and install more than just the audio codecs if you don't pay attention

Having this issue as well, probably. Sometimes for some reason the effects get quieter to the point where they are barley recognizable. Doesn't seem to affect the ingame music as far as I can tell for now, though.

I installed those codecs you have linked here and after getting the x64 components it seemed to work. However I still do notice a slight sound dampening right after clicking on the trade window, but it then goes away after about 4-5 seconds. I have been losing my mind in Crusader Kings 2 for so long about the military tab dampening my sounds, thanks.

Actually on further inspection it turns out it didn't work, and dampens/undampens after opening most of the government/trade/tech tabs.

Try the K-Lite codecs but do the mega as it has directshow filters and ffdshow codecs of the full included.
and as always make sure that the installer doesn't try to add anything "extra"

Will do, thanks. Going to update this post on the result.

Uninstalled the shark007 codecs, installed k-lite mega successfully but it didn't fix the problem, I used the default settings on the k-lite mega pack as well.

I then tried to make a mod that used those files and silenced all audio in them which I must have done my directory wrong or could have been because I used .ogg rather than the wave format that the game reads so maybe it just skipped over my mod. Being lazy rather than doing it again and keeping the files in wave format I just straight up deleted the following sound files:

Code:
tab_click
tab_diplomacy
tab_economy
tab_government
tab_ideas
tab_military
tab_missions
tab_religion_america
tab_religion_christian
tab_religion_eastern
tab_religion_india
tab_religion_muslim
tab_religion_pagan
tab_stability
tab_technology
tab_trade

Deleting this files completely(after backing them up) has at first glance fixed my problem though it's kind of like a pyrrhic victory at this point. Still though I don't need those tab sounds to function if it means that every other sound won't bug out. Just after I posted this I restarted my computer and replaced the sound files in case that was the reason why the k-light codec pack wasn't helping me, which did nothing.

Uploaded a DxDiag in case it's of any help, click the text that says "dxdiag" on it, I was confused at first.

Codecs didn't fix this for me. Here's an error log if that helps.. I also wonder what the duplicate errors are on an unrelated note.

I currently merged 2 threads about the same issue, this also could be a bug however I'll have to see if I can get more information on that. Thank you for reporting the problem and adding the logs and DxDiags + trying the different solutions. When I (or someone else) have/has more information it will be posted here.

I have the same problem, also windows 7 64 bit, but my soundcard is a different one, SB Recon 3D with actual drivers. For the first round about 30 minutes all sounds okay, after a while playin, more and more sound effects are missing, sometimes the whole game is quite (excepting the music). Also have the "[sound.cpp:255]: Sound menu_click not found." in the error log.

It looks like that higher game speed makes more sounds missing than lower game speed, but I'm not sure about this.

Complete restarting the game fixes it for the next 30 minutes.

I was going to say the same. Game speed seems to be related.

I have the exact same problem and I'm glad I'm not the only one.

Just wanted to add that this issue existed even in CK2, but much less intense. It took several hours of playing CK2 for the problem to appear there, and even then the sounds would go out in a much slower pace. That's why I didn't bother to report it back then. I use a 64-bit system too, by the way.

Like some other guy said here, this looks like a memory loading problem. I don't know, though, I'm not an expert or anything.

This was the case for me as well. It's not a HUGE deal, but it is pretty annoying. I play on a laptop that's not strictly intended for gaming, but still runs most low-end games fine. It's only a year old, and I was under the impression that the requirements for EU4 were pretty much the same as those for CK2.

Where should I start? I'm considering downloading the new codecs, though I'm not sure what exactly that would do, and am hesitant to start downloading things unless I'm reasonably confident it will fix the problem.

EDIT: I downloaded the codecs, and the problem seems to be fixed. Thanks.
