[Win7] Sounds getting quieter, and eventually stop playing

I'd love a fix/more information. Updating codecs didn't help me.

For what it's worth, I just got this issue without alt-tabbling or even unpausing the game. I just loaded up my save, looked around a few map modes and clicked on tome provinces/diplomacy screens, then noticed the SFX had died on me.

Doesn't Steam automatically install DirectX when loading the game for the first time?

In any case I'm trying it now. Using this link, by the way.

Forgive my ignorance, but where do I unpack all those DirectX files?

Edit: ah, the installer is unpacked too, I see.

Thanks for all of your reports and feedback! I have hopefully resolved this in the internal version (I can't reproduce the problem so am unable to verify).

Just wanting to echo how frustrating this bug is, could we get some feedback please. What is causing this and how can it be fixed?
