My PC shuts off suddenly while playing EU4(and Crusader Kings 2, with the exact same issues/timeframes), but only when playing those games. It has yet to shut off playing any other game(Starcraft 2 and Left4Dead 2, but as far as I know those aren't as stressful on the GPU/CPU), or doing anything else. I understand that this may be a hardware issue, but am at a loss as to what, specifically, is the problem.

Initially I could only open the program, start a new game, and within 5 minutes the PC would turn itself off. I tried various troubleshooting attempts(checking all connections, airflow, etc), the only significant change I did was remove a cooling fan from the system, and was able to run the game for ~35 minutes before the PC shut down(left it paused after starting a new game for 30 minutes watching the temps, and then 5 minutes after I started actively playing, the PC shut down). The only constant that I've seen, is that the PC will not shut down if it was "idling" during the game(paused with no clicking/scrolling/mouse movement of any kind). Or if I selected a window other than the program itself(the game ran unpaused for 15 minutes before I made it the "active" window and the PC turned off, again within 5 minutes).

I thought it might be a temperature issue, but my CPU never goes higher than 50C while my GPU never goes above 60C(I've been running in windowed mode to watch the temps in Open Hardware Monitor). I stress-tested my GPU and CPU(using Furmark and Prime95) and both seemed to check out fine, and I'm not overclocking either(that I know of, I don't know how to do either, so I'm not sure how to check and verify that I'm not). I've tested the RAM and the sticks seem to check out as well.

The PSU I have is brand new(literally: purchased last week), and am willing to entertain that it's defective, but I don't want to go through the warranty hassle until I'm sure it's not something else(Here's a link to the one I purchased, if it helps: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817153173).

While my PC isn't new, I did recently acquire it from family because it fit the recommended requirements to play Paradox Interactive games(it just needed a PSU). I'm at a loss as to what the specific problem could be, and would appreciate any help with it, since the whole reason I "upgraded" was to play these two games, and find myself still unable to do so.

It reads exactly like an overheating issue, despite what you saw with the temps. PDS games push the video card harder than almost any other games of their era. Not because of detailed graphics or high resolutions, but because it offloads as much work as possible onto the video processor, to free up the main CPU to deal with the vast amount of data the game uses to model history. You might try a couple of other programs like GPU-Zand CPU-Z, or SPEEDFAN.

Except for this bit:
the only significant change I did was remove a cooling fan from the system, and was able to run the game for ~35 minutes before the PC shut down
Are you saying it ran longer with less cooling? It's hard to see how that's possible, unless that fan was faulty. Were those temps taken while or immediately after it crashed?

I'm not sure what it means, just reporting what happened to see if I can get help with the problem... I had three fans in the case, removed the exhaust fan and flipped one of the intake fans around to make it an exhaust fan. The old exhaust fan achieved a higher rpm rate than either of the two intake fans so hot air isn't leaving the system as fast, so i suppose there is less cooling...

But yes, prior to removing the fan I couldn't get the game to run longer than 10 minutes regardless of what I tried, after removing it I managed to get the game to run for 30+ minutes. Though that could be a power management issue: All the exhaust fans were plugged into the same 12v cable on the PSU and after I removed a fan, I ended up having the remaining two plugged into different cables(though I've never seem that cause a problem before unless the PSU was faulty).

As for the temps themselves, I'm currently using Open Hardware Monitor to check temps, and I have been checking the temps in windowed mode, so I can see the GPU/CPU temps rise as the game runs. It's not exact, because I've never been looking right at the temps as the PC turns off, but within the range of 3 minutes prior the temp of the GPU was 58C and the CPU was 47C. And that was after 25 minutes of EU4 being active(but not actually doing anything during the pause of the game start).

I'll get those programs you've recommended and check the temps while playing EU4. I'll also see if I can record the temps just as the PC turns off on a phone or something, so I can get an exact temperature.

You might also look into whether your power supply is up the job. This game is probably making your video card draw more power than normal.

I recorded the shutdown, and the temps was 54C for the GPU, and 42C for the CPU(39 for core 1, 42 for core 2), so temperatures are within normal ranges for the system. It doesn't seem to be a temperature problem.

You might also look into whether your power supply is up the job. This game is probably making your video card draw more power than normal.

My PSU should be up for the job of powering my PC. My Graphic Card(GeForce GT 430) is plugged into the PCI-E slot, and there are no additional power connections to it. I assume this means it's just powered by the motherboard and that it can't draw extra power from the PSU. According to the specs, it requires 300W of system power(and caps at 45W of graphics power), and my 650W PSU should cover that unless it's defective. But if it didn't cover that, It shouldn't be able to power the graphics card, or PC, at all, right?

I'm going to verify my ram works using memtest86 after posting this. Any other suggestions on what my problem might be? Or if I'm wrong about my above assumptions on the PSU/motherboard?

Yes your GPU gets it's power from the motherboard, but it in turn gets it from the PSU. I'm speculating that your PSU provides enough power for you machine when the GPU is idling, but not at full blast.

I dont know of a way of testing your PSUs power output, but you could take it to a PC shop for testing.

Try this: open up the case and pull the video card out, dust it and reseat it in the slot. Dust out the whole machine while you're in there - use compressed air for this.
