[Win7 64] AMD Drivers Crashing

I just wanted to say that I approve of this game and I cannot play it and it makes me sad.

Might get meme heavy toward the end

So randomly during the game it freezes for 15-30 seconds coursour still working, then the screen blinks (although usually it happens several times during a short period of time; 3-12 times in a row) and then it works again for another few minutes or so.

Game rarely crashes itself although few times it just made my screen go grey and system stopped responding.

I managed to spot (through alt tabbing) that I get the message then 'video driver has crashed and has been restored'.

It is highly annoying as it takes away all the enjoyment out of the game. I mean once crash every 5-10 minutes is bearable (frankly got used to that somehow, just powering through), but its the times when it does it 10 times in a row and then 5 minutes later again.

My spec is MSI GT725 with AMD Radeon HD 4850 running on Win 7 64 bit.

I tried installing newest drivers, then newest beta drivers. then I formatted my hard drive as I thought maybe registry is messed up. I then tried to play it on old drivers that Windows finds itself, update them again. But no fix, it keeps crashing the drivers.

Installing newest drivers on fresh system did not help, so I formatted it again and currently I am on a fresh system on 2009 drivers - have not installed anything yet (as I can always install the newer ones but rolling back is a mess). Also tried playing it without the steam on, nothing.

I'm out of ideas if the format did not help and I want to play it so badly, its my favourite series (although I feel a bit uncomfortable with the idea of buying a computer only because of one game...).

Halp please, my Poland really needs me to can into space.

Well, having 2009 drivers is no good at all - so get onto the latest ones:

If that still doesn't help, you likely have a hardware fault or it's overheating.
Please report the temperatures of your CPU and video (GPU) 1/ before starting the game up and 2/ after say 20 minutes' play. If your PC's vendor has given you no way of reading temperatures, install GPU-Zand CPU-Z, or SPEEDFAN.

BTW you are on the minimum memory the game requires, 2gb, so don't load any big mods or anything. Upgrade to at least 4gb if you can, I'd suggest.

Well, I have tried it on 2013 drivers did not really help, but might just as well install them again.

About the memory - my RAM was failing Windows diagnostics tests (although I have no idea what that means), so I was my memory moduels separately, eventually took out one faulty 2GB one - but it did not help. Same thing happens when I use the both of them and sti at 4GB.

I will post the temperatures later when I get the chance to play, although I think they were reasonable.

I have actually thought that it cannot be harder because, well you know drivers, plus it is not a general problem, most things run fine (although I have problem with one other game, but it can run fine for hours and then crashes in this particular spot every time, so it seems to be a different kind of animal).
I have scheduled a hardware check at a service on Friday - well see what they will tell me.

I have the precise same thing happen, repeated crashes of the video card drivers. Mine is also a Radeon, an HD 5800-series, and also 64-bit Windows 7. I don't have this happen on any other game, actually, even on ones that seem to be way, way more graphically-intensive than EU4! It's absolutely unplayable as-is. My temperatures are also fine, my RAM is all good when checked. I've tried multiple versions of the drivers, including the one I'm on now (Catalyst 13.10 beta), all with the exact same result.

Is this a common Radeon problem?

Not that I'm aware of, no. You could check on the AMD forums or other hardware support sites I guess.

The EU games push the video card harder than almost any other game of its era. Not because of detailed graphics or high resolutions, but because it offloads as much work as possible onto the video processor, to free up the main CPU to deal with the vast amount of data the game uses to model history.
