My wife and I both got Europa Universalis IV and are loving it. There is one catch, however, and it has to do with the terrain. With identical videocards and similar set ups we somehow have completely different terrain detail.

Terrain in her EU IV game is incredibly detailed--you can see individual marshes!

Terrain in mine is not only blurry and lame, but I can also see the seams between what seems to be square tiles of textures. Country names on her map are crisp and clear, while mine are slightly pixelated and blah. You can see examples of this in the pictures I included in this thread. I also included a dxdiag.

We both have our detail settings to max(default), and I updated my graphics drivers again just in case. No difference. No settings on my ATI Catalyst software should be making a difference either.

So now what do I do?

Hi RabbitMan,

Try deleting the settings.txt and \gfx\ directory in the My Documents\Paradox Interactive\Europa Universalis IV so the game can regenerate these.

If that did not work, try full clean reinstall.

  • Important: Go to '..\Documents\Paradox Interactive\Europa Universalis IV\save games\' and copy all the save games you want to keep outside the folder.
  • Go to your Steam Games library, right click on "Europa Universalis IV" and select "Delete content".
  • Go to the steam installation folder at '..\Steam\SteamApps\common\', and check if the Europa Universalis IV folder is removed. If not, delete the entire folder.
  • Go to '..\My Documents\Paradox Interactive\' and remove the entire Europa Universalis IV folder.
  • Install the game, make sure you install the game outside the 'C:\Program Files\' or 'C:\Program Files (x86)\' folders, as it can cause issues with permissions.

Update:

None of this worked. I checked the 'settings.doc' and noticed some odd things though.

1. 'force_pow2_textures=no' Is that important?
2. 'shadows=no' but 'shadowSize=2048'. Is that supposed to be that way?
3. 'draw_hires_terrain=no' I thought that might be the culprit, but switched to 'yes' turned all of the countries pitch black and caused other irregularities in the game.

UPDATE 2:

I just noticed blurry textures in another game, googled the issue for my graphics card--It was an AMD driver issue. Uninstalled, and the game is here in all of its glory!

Thanks for trying to help!
