I dearly love CK II - I still maintain it is Paradox's best game - and have put many hours into it, but I will admit to being a fairly conservative player. I don't like map painting and I do tend to roleplay my characters to some extent, making realistic goals for them and basing event options on their traits, etc. I usually play in England, Scotland, France or Brittany - occasionally Navarre, the HRE or Scandinavia, and a couple of Byzantine games, but rarely further afield than that. I've never attempted a proper playthrough as an Indian, Steppe or Muslim character.

With CK III releasing with all cultures and religions playable by default, and with the map looking a lot more fleshed out and less skewed towards Europe, do you think you'll try playthroughs as more 'exotic' characters? Will those of you who, like me, have never played 'East of Suez' try Turkic, Persian, Indian and perhaps even Tibetan characters? I know there's a reasonably small forum community who are aficionados of some of the Jade Dragon content (the only DLC I don't own) so I'd be particularly interested to hear from them with regards to interesting characters they'd recommend.

I'm sure I'll revert to type and end up playing as Konan first, to get the hang of things, but I do hope to build myself up to playing as someone in India or Persia.

What about you?

I rarely ever played in Europe, so yes. Howver, I expect a few DLC's to flesh out the eastern realms, so I'll wait a bit. Especially with no nomads, it seems a bit weird to play in that area.
First game is going to be Ireland to learn the new mechanics. Then? Africa maybe, or Scandinavia.

Just like you I mostly play Christian feudal rulers. I have played a couple of Muslims and Tribal-pagans, but those ended always with becoming feudal and Christian. O am only now playing my first playthrough as an Eastern (Jain) ruler in India/Asia. I never played in Africa (tribal or feudal) and I also never played steppe-hordes or a republic for a long game.

I will try out Africa this time, to see if it is more interesting, immersive, this time around.

I will for sure mostly because new local inventions and the religion system being more transparent so easier to see what makes all religions unique and it also seems like CK3 is made to give more regions love.

Also it all depends on how cool local unique buildings are. Like the walls of Benin makes Benin more fun to play etc.

I have played all sort of weird things in CK2. I still find myself playing mostly in Europe, but I think that is rather natural (considering the focus of the game)
With that said, I am sure many people will be more tempted to play outside Europe in CK3 with the new features included. Reilgion alone might make it more appealing

Not really. In fact, I will appreciate it if there is an option to turn off some regions I don't want in game. Let's say, a French King might not care what Indian Rajas were doing in Medieval time.

i generally only play dynasties with unique coas, so thats got me restricted mostly to europeans. i also tend to prefer religions with, uh, mechanics, so thats basically just catholicism with some dips into paganism to shake things up

with ck3 im probably gonna kick it off with an ua brian run like everyone and his dog and then just blitz through the cheevies whenever i finish/get tired of that. how diverse my selection ends up is directly proportional to how diverse the cheevo setup ends up being

im just gonna roll as some tiny byzantine count, ideally one in the heart of the empire, and just be the cancerous growth slowly killing the empire by eating all the other counts and killing all their sons until its just my dynasty on every title

because actually *being* emperor aint all that fun

I haven't seen anything that would make we want to really play outside of Europe, personally. Perhaps when they add culture focused content packs and specialized government types that will change.

Definitely going to play as a count somewhere protected, but perhaps on the periphery of the map so I can get a grasp on what usually happens around the world.

Afraid to be in Europe and then suddenly given more land or be made a duke!

Honestly probably not - I don’t have a lot of time anymore to play games as I’d like to so I’ll probably stick to the same, easier starts to minimize the chance of “failure”

I've played at least one game in most bits of the map except Tibet and I tended to bounce off of Horde gameplay when I tried. I like... I dunno, romantic places though? Like the British islands, something about islands and druids and green and wet and standing stones and mist and stuff just does it for me. Same with the ERE but the attraction there is mostly Constantinople, but also Sicily but also murderous intrique.

Most of my CK2 games have been in Europe - Ireland, Scotland, France, Spain, and Sweden mostly. I've tried other areas such as Africa and India, but those games never really went anywhere. I prefer a place where I can start as a count and slowly gain land and rise through the ranks. In many parts of the world, you can end up being blocked as the AI around you gains levies more quickly and conquer more quickly than you can get CBs (where needed) or raise enough levies to stand a chance. At least in Europe, I've usually been able to avoid that situation. Of course, it is likely that I just picked the worst counties and that's how I ran into that situation. I'm sure there are other counties in those other parts of the world where I'd have more fun and be able to expand more easily. I've never been a "tall" player except when I have no other choice.

In CK3, I'll probably play other areas later, but will likely start somewhere in Europe. I'll have to click around and see what the counties look like to decide where I want to start. I don't have any specific area that I really want to start in over others. I love Scotland and Ireland, but dealing with the Norse invasion in 867 isn't something I enjoy and I always got tired of trying to push back England so I could take them over afterwards as they have so much strength that it just took too much time. I could try them in 1066 and might at some point, but I prefer earlier start dates. In the end, I'll probably end up somewhere in France. I definitely don't plan on playing one of the famous characters that are highlighted when you choose your start. I haven't really enjoyed any games where I start with someone that has such a scripted (whether it's scripted or not, that's how it seems to me) life set up. Obviously you can change things, but it just has too much of a controlled start that I just never liked them. Even the Leon start in the stream looks like it's almost expected that you take over and unite the kingdoms right away. That just takes the fun out of it for me when there is or seems to be an expectation that you'll do certain things or play a certain way. Even though you don't have to, that expectation ruins it for me.

Hard to answer right now. I tried a lot of characters in CK2 but there are some places I never looked back, such as India (which was terribly homogeneous) or the norse (I hated the need of raiding all the time). I'll certainly try them again and see what they have to offer this time.

I've always played a wide variety of characters. Since I never get larger than a regular size empire, it doesn't feel like the same game because you always have different neighbors and, at least in CK2, different government types which affect the AIs play style.

I did feel the non-Europe areas were very much not included in the events and decisions. So I hope the team puts more non-European culture events (and more European ones too). More all around! At least we know with the new religious system, these bastard children and adultery will have different impacts in areas where they were accepted.

Personally, the first non-European ruler I intend to play will be Burma. Because I'm so excited that at least a little bit of Southeast Asia is included for the first time.

I would love to say i'll play way more varied Characters. but i dont really think i will. i went into CK2 thinking about how many new characters i'll play compared to CK1 and all the new stuff i could do but honestly i usually gravitate towards the same characters. i am planning on trying new characters and seeing where i go.

Ironically the most varied playthroughs ive had have been in mods like GoT or Elder Kings (i've played an ungodly amount of Characters in GoT for instance) which goes to show how much mods add to replayability.

My first play through will be something small, like 1066 Duke of Anjou, or Dublin Start. Just to see how the Game plays. I certainly won't be doing anything big, or too ambitious...
