There is a lot I like about this game, but there are 3 game killers that ruin the games for me.

1. Soviet Union is easily defeated by Germany, every time.

2. China is always conquered and puppeted by Japan, every time.

3. Japan will not attack allies or US, preferring to attack Soviet Union.

Will you devs fix these, please?

Agreed.

I think Germany is way too strong.

You can basically move in anywhere with German troops, no enemy will stop you and terrain penalties are meaningless.

In fact this game is all about who has the best troops. The effect of terrain and other modifiers are minimal. That is a shame.

On #3 I quite experienced the contrary during my few games. On the others I agree...

What's killing the pleasure is the dramatic slow down of game speed in late 48. Still better than 45 with 1.02 though. So, devs, if you could kindly push further the idea you get to lessen the load on the cpu to increase the speed, that would be greatly appreciated.

Well, i play almost every game as URSS and tbh I'm not sure that i can beat a human player playing as Ger. Is challenging in single player, but in MP...don't know. Have you played in MP as URSS? :D Can you share your experience?
I want to try soon MP, but i need some extra info :D
Thx,

1. Soviet Union is easily defeated by Germany, every time.

I agree with you. I believe that the Soviet ground defence effectiveness should be increased (and linked to the purge events, so that a human player will have a reason for choosing the non-violent option).

2. China is always conquered and puppeted by Japan, every time.

I agree. Maybe China is too weak.

3. Japan will not attack allies or US, preferring to attack Soviet Union.

In both my games (1938 scenario) as Germany, Japan Dowed the US, without the perl harbour event. Personally, i think that if Japan manages to defeat China, there is no reason for them to DOW the sleeping giant.

on the contrary, it seems quite reasonable for Japan to DOW the soviets if barbarossa is going well.

AI Soviet Union is NOT, and I repeat NOT effected by the GDE nerf. For AI it doesn't do anything, even the gearing up for war events are just there for the show. They are only for human player. I believe part of the problem regarding USSR is simply that the human wave doctrine in it's current, default state is suitable only for more experienced human player than for any AI country.

From my experience, I cannot agree completely. The Soviets smash the Germans in about 50% of my Games (except when I play the Reich ^^), It also happened some times, that the timid Germans didn't dare to invade the Soviet Union in 1941, only to be invaded by them about mid-1943 and be crushed in late 1944. So far the funniest Game I had was when Germany decided to back off in "Danzig or war" and lived in peaceful coexistence with it's neighbours.

China however, is indeed conquered by the Japanese Empire every single time, usually in late 1939. Maybe there should be an event which simulates Maos rise to power against Chiang Kai-Shek and the Kuomintang by giving bonus ressources and IC to Communist China, or via some "province X defects to Communist China" events similar to Vichy France's loss of provinces to Free France, followed up by an increase of production or fighting capability for the Chinese similar to the "Pearl Harbor" event for Japan.

I never had Japan attack the SU, even when it was ripe for the taking because of the Germans smashing the Russkies to kingdom come. Personally, I don't see the need for the Japanese, to attack the US when they already have taken China, which was always their goal. Historically, Japan in it's own recognition had no other choice than to declare war on the US after they cut off Japan with their stupid embargo. The embargo was actually intended to force the Japanese to make acknowledgements and fold to the wishes of US foreign policy. Instead it was percieved by the Japanese as a severe humiliation (bad idea!) and an attempt to cut them off their vital ressource supply, on which they relied hard, having nearly no ressources of their own.

So if Japan conquers the whole of China, there would be absolutely no need for them to declare war on the US! On the contrary, it should be far more likely that they try to get a piece of the cake that is the SU, beating an already weakened foe and aiding their German allies at the same time, instead of risking the wrath of the Allies!

I would really love to see some improvements in these discussed areas, since they are indeed crucial for the Game as a whole.

Cordial greetings,

Agin

Do you mean that the gde = 0.2 only affects human players?

Can anyone confirm this? If it is true, then the human wave doctrine is SERIOUSLY underpowered (at least for me- a rather average player- in the 1938 scenario).

I'd also throw in that Strategic AI doesn't act rationally. In fact, I'd say it is suicidally wired into the treaties.

For example.

Playing as Jugoslavia, I quickly (mid-1936) declare war on Albania. Immediately Italy declares war on me, while still engaged in Ethiopia.

Then Germany DoW Italy. Then France DoW Germany. Then USSR DoW Germany.

It is highly irrational for 1936 Germany to DoW Italy for any reason. Especially if it will bring in France/UK into the equation.

Strategic AI should look at relative army strengths, likely belligerents and possible gains. At this point it just seems to go "oh, you violated my GoI and declares war, no matter the state of its Armed Forces"

Agreed.

They survived until late 1942 in my game.

They did attack me in October 1941. Without an event.
I have been playing as the US. Twice in 36, twice in 39. All three of these happened each time, until I quit sometime in 45. I have been patched up to 1.04 each time.

I realize others have had a somewhat different experience, especially with 3, but the easy fall of the USSR and China seem quite common. These are game killers for me.

This game has so much potential, it could be a great game.
But these major bugs need fixing. There are many more problems, such as Latvia, Lithuania, and Estonia never being invaded bu Soviets or anybody else, bloodless naval combat, artillery being too overpowered, and many others that have been mentioned on this forum.

I think it's hard to judge the AI. At a certain point, an experienced human player learn to best the AI, period. Like said someone above, the game gives its full flavour when you play against a human. Try MP games, and you'll see that no country is an easy fold.

Also remember this game is not programmed to closely follow the unfolding of historical event; it's full of variable that makes it every time different.

Those are all faults within the text ai switch files rather than issues with the engine itself. You could try a mod that changes AI behavior. For example (shameless self promotion here) if you want to play as Germany and have none of those three things happen, then you could try my mod. (Although Japan still puppets China about 1/3 of the time, even though I reduced infrastructure levels in China and recoded the China ai files).
