Okay, it's probably because of MY character traits, but it irks me no end, that a vassal will NOT build an improvement, even after I've given him more than enough Gold, and the improvement (Road) is the ONLY thing he can build! Even after 3 months, he still will not build it.

Just to ease my frustration, i routinely (at early part of the game especially) go in under the Count, just to build an improvement. (Cheating, i know, but GRRRR). lol

Is there no way to mod it, so i can direct a vassal to build something? Heck, i don't mind if it's tied in to their loyalty (the same way raising their troops directly has to be over 80%). Before i go around the bend, and turn into a RL Kinslayer.

j/k about the Kinslayer before you all call the cops on me. :)

I think it's somewhat random. Whenever I give my vassals money they'll usually spend it on building stuff.

Perhaps yours is just lazy?

Are you sure it is the only thing he can build? if he needs only the gold to build a small castle he will wait until he has enough money, it seems fortifications have the priority.

Yep, I'm sure, i even double-checked when i went in under his save.

And gosh, i sure hope I don't also have to worry about what their traits are, if they'll build stuff. lol

I do notice that my Bishops (who i obviously can't nudge) will build church stuff before economic (and after defensive stuff).

Addendem: Nope, he's not Lazy. ;) (Tho I'm pretty sure you were just kidding me). lol

It's definitely not random. The AI follows a set pattern in his building (might depend on terrain type and possibly ruler religion), which unfortunately also includes castles.
Often when you see the AI doing nothing, it is because he is saving up for a castle/fort.

As far as I am aware, the order in which the AI builds is not exposed to modders.

Which province is it ?

There is one special province (Atholl in Scotland) where previously the AI didn't built anything. They have fixed that by adding events just for this province so that improvements will be built.

If it is another province then is just some weird AI-behaviour, not much you can do about it. Well you could save the game, reload as that vassal, start the built, save and reload as your previous ruler again.

In my games vassals never build training camps. If I conquer a province that hasn't this improvement I always have to start building by myself before creating a county.

I hate this!

The real question here is weather u have modified game in any way? To be more specific, did u mess with db/provinceimprovements.txt or something like that. If u have make sure u didnt delete or decrease "additional_return_on_investment =" values. If u didnt do this, then in same text file find road network improvement and increase the 0. part in "additional_return_on_investment = 0.01" just bellow road. If u put it to something like 0.09 im sure AI WILL build it.

... it seems that if an improvement costs 100, the Ai wont build it until he gets 120. can anyone else verify, or am I just making things up again? :D

105 seems to be the breaking point in my observations, before the AI will build an economic building. Sometimes, 100 isn't really 100, it's actually rounded up so it could be 99.99 gold.

More observations: If the count is rebellious, he won't build, he saves his gold. Have one right now, with over 1000 in gold (and I REALLY want him to rebel, hehehe), and he hasn't built the only improvement available to him, the Moneylenders. There's nothing else showing up that he could be saving for. Empire is at peace and he doesn't have any epidemics in his county.

Since moneylender have many nasty events tied to them I might think the ai files for catholics say dont build with regards to moneylenders....this is pure speculation however, Veld probably knows

I was under the impresion that a build always take the amount of time it would have taken when the building started regardles of what horrible things might happen?

Yep, that's my understanding also. Build started in normal times, plague hits, build continues at pre-plague schedule. Build started after plague, takes 999,999,999 months (grins), plague ends, build continues at the plague time.

Also, i thought the AI wouldn't start builds during plagues.

would mucking around with this file change the AI build order? in other words, what I would like the AI to do is build cheaper structures (like useful $100 tile factories, quicker build times) before they save up for $400 roadnets and $500 castles?

in DV... in CK they will build during a plague.

Yeah, I remember good old CK during the plague era. You conquer a land and notice that the structure won't be finished for another 800 months or so. No wonder that province had so much money on hand when you conquered it.
