What are superstacks?

Like in other PDX games, giant armies that reach the supply limit that are practically unstoppable except against other doom stacks. It won't work in Hoi3/4 because you probably can't afford in supply and combat width prevents more than 4 divisions attack from one province effectively. They get a stacking penalty if more than 4 attack.

Seems highly unlikely to me. Subs were great at harassing, not attacks on concentrated enemy forces.

Well, of course, one wouldn't expect them to defeat the super-stack in one engagement. If you're willing to lose a few subs in the process, though, you should be able to take it out over the course of a few attacks. Subs proved pretty effective in the war at killing carriers from ambush. You snipe a couple out with torpedo waves out of nowhere, and suddenly you're just dealing with a regular stack rather than a super stack.

Well besides typhoons, what could sink a carrier superstack? By that I'm talking about the eight fleet carriers or more.

Anything as long as the weather is bad enough to ground the planes or make them unusable. I think if you threw enough AAs on your ships in DH you could fare pretty well too.

IRL? A fleet with a massive amount of AA CLs could probably get close enough to do it, assuming they had enough speed.

Eh, ship AA did scratch unless you were firing 40mm Bofors at a Japanese guy trying to ram you. They'd hammer away for hours between kills. Luckily, the air-dropped ordnance was also pretty bad at killing nimble ships, so a fast fleet should be able to close down a carrier-only group and tear then apart before they take too much damage in return.

Not against superstacks they didn't.

Eh, only because they weren't used. Other carriers being nearby wouldn't really negatively impact your chances of hitting with your opening spread.

With the way the naval systems works in HoI4, scenarios like having a flotilla of commerce rading german Type VII's being forced to fight to the death against the entire british Atlantic Fleet will be very unlikely.

Based on what we know, most commerce-raiding fights might look like this:
- A sub or surface raider finds a convoy and sinks it
- A sub or surface raider finds a convoy escorted by a single or a small group of naval ships. Might run away stealthily, might be sunk, might still sink the convoy and escorts (if the raider is something like a Deutschland-class)
- A sub or surface raider finds a convoy but doesn't sink it rapidly or stay concealed, so the convoys radio in for help, aircraft and/or naval vessels patrolling the sea zone join in, see above for what happens next.

Fleets can spread out across a seazone to more easily find an enemy, or they can choose to stay concentrated, with more friends nearby but having a harder time spotting and stopping enemy naval vessels. They can also directly do convoy escorting.

Compare that to something like DH where your sub fleet is sitting where the convoys go, sinking them over time, but always in the fear of being found and nuked by the royal navy (or other naval doomstack).

The system with small ships being flottilas that actually were simulated as a single ship is gone. Now, ships are single units, no matter if they are submarines, destroyers, cruisers or battleships.

i don't think so

in the Jap WWW daniel created some pretty big fleets and i think even commented that bigger was better - it will be really interesting to see how things go in the next WWW if they continue the current Japgame - go vote for 1 :)

carriers aircraft are stacking penalized because of the tight airspace inside naval combat. Past 4 carriers worth of planes efficiency will go down a lot.
