How do you feel about this?
Most people prefer free stuff, but portraits is fluff. They'll probably be released as DLC simultaneously with a gameplay oriented DLC. Same as CK2.I'd prefere if portraits were a part of larger patches/Expansions or added continusly to the game. But I pressume that they will come in special DLCs.
If past has relevance:
Paradox will let us pay for new species if and only if there are new mechanics associated.
E. g. Sword of islam, conquest of paradise etc.
It will be never be like say total war where we have to pay a lot for "new" faction which are pretty much reskin. (Paradox sell cosmetic only packs which are cheap though)
Now, plants, if ever in the game, will surely have different mechanisms rather than just cosmetic change. Paradox is being strategic here only releasing earthlike animals at the start, allowing them opportunity and time to develop unique races in future DLC, which I will be certainly interested to buy.
Edit: fix typo and some misinfo.
Please read what you quote more carefully.Paradox DO sell cosmetic dlcs without any mechanics.
What do you think the portrait and unit packs are?
For now. When CKII came out everyone has to play generic Christian feudal lords.Species in Stellaris are nothing BUT cosmetic stuff.
None of the species have any kind of mechanic attached to them.
It is purely visual.
Yes it is an assumption, as would be kind of obvious in speculative comments, and when I said with disclaimer that I am using past as reference.Assuming that a plant species "surely" will have different mechanics, is only an assumption, and a rather odd one to boot.
They don't have to, but they can. The mere fact that they generate food for themselves (mushrooms still consume what other organisms produce) make them unique. Please explain to me why a plant catagory should work different tHan say... oh... a catagory of mushrooms.
It's quite the assumption indeed, but I can certainly see a reason for making a difference.Assuming that a plant species "surely" will have different mechanics, is only an assumption, and a rather odd one to boot.

All the other species, including mushrooms rely on digesting other species. A plant however can "eat" sunlight.
Well I did use quotations.Plants eat sunlight?
And humans eat oxygen I guess.
Well I did use quotations.
Fine they "eat" raw materials by utilizing sun energy. For the most part, nobody else does. Better?
Point is they are different. Although mechanic differences isn't a necessity, but there is an excuse for implementing some.
Well the plant class was shown in previews, so it seems kind of disingenuous to say it's OPTIONAL, and having a new class of aliens isn't just cosmetic, that has real gameplay consequences.
