Personally, I'd be all for it as long as it's reasonably-priced. You can mod in new phenotypes and portraits, and awesome artists will come along as the lifespan of the game grows (we already have at least one pre-release in SC Watson), but Paradox will always have the monopoly on the best-looking artwork, and if they're willing to give us that level of quality on a whole slew of new portraits as part of a new phenotype, that's a cosmetic DLC I'm almost always buying.

I along with a fair bit of people are ok with paying for Crusader Kings 2 portraits as it helps with the immersion.

If species type comes with an average 10-15 new portraits along with building and ship design, I'm be alright with buying for $5-10.

May I ask you why you bought the galaxy edition?
I mean a week (or so) ago you asked after the stream if the game will be a bug parade despite the devs repeating that it's hot code and not representative for the final product. You even created a thread that asks if the game will flop. https://forum.paradoxplaza.com/forum/index.php?threads/what-if-stellaris-flops.923202/
I wonder why a sceptical guy like you bought the most expensive pre order edition.
And no I do not stalk you I just read threads in this forum regularly and it was something that got my attention...

Well I guess I do enjoy paying for DLCs. After all I did buy Rome 2 and that turned out pretty well.

This game will have tons of DLCs simply because they are not limited by factors like historical accuracy. Whether this will be a good or a bad thing it's still unknown though.

Couple of points:

1) PLANT and any other extra aliens could be added by patch, as a bonus, or paid DLC.

2) Whatever is added is OPTIONAL. No one is ever going to be required to purchase any DLC, especially if it's a cosmetic add.

Well the plant class was shown in previews, so it seems kind of disingenuous to say it's OPTIONAL, and having a new class of aliens isn't just cosmetic, that has real gameplay coonsequences.

Either Johan or Heinrick (my spelling is no doubt atrocious, I am sorry!) commented something that the PLANT category was actually a dummy category and not filled out with real stuff. I tried to search for the tweet, but haven't located it yet.

To OP paradox always have done plenty of DLC either cosmetic or expansion, but you don't need to buy them, they are optionnal, particulary cosmetic DLC. If you don't like them, don't buy them. I know that, i'm don't going to buy a cosmetic DLC with near-human portraits for exemple coz i hate that. You choose what to buy.

I do hope they fill it out with real portraits. I'd love to play as an Ent :)
Worst case the first Fungi Portrait looks remarkably plant like and is quite cool. There are so many cool phenotypes they could add in the future! Fish, Feathered Reptiles (Dinosaurs), Plants, Cats (they need their own phenotype! One portrait is not enough to satisfy our Cat Overlords!), and others :)

No one is FORCING anyone to buy anything.

They are very likely to release new art for the game, perhaps as separate DLC or as part of expansion packs... but no one will force you to buy them and they will not be needed to play they game and enjoy it exactly as it is.

They can't very well have everything done from the start, development of Paradox games usually continue for years after the first iteration was released, just look at EUIV and CK2 for example. They are vastly different games today from when they were initially released.

Hmmm Not sure if troll thread is trolling.... But what the heck. I'm a cheap bait date.

I'm sure someone else has pointed out that there is a good likely hood that Flags, Additional Sound Tracks, and Species types will likely be released along side of larger expansions. They have done this with their other titles. It is a model that I'd go on to say that even if the majority of their customers don't appreciate, they buy in to. I am a huge fan of the Modular approach to extra content. When I first got in to CK2 money wasn't flowing that well, so I was able to pick and choose what extra content I wished to have.

I expect with the strictly cosmetic stuff, that still cost money to make, (music, races, flags) we'll see bundled or modular DLC.

This is a great and time tested way to do things for Paradox games, and I look forward to buying many many many content packs in the future.

As for Plants? It's been said already it could very well be a place holder. The fact that it was in all caps, likely indicated that it was a planed phenotype, but as release came closer, they decided that they had enough already, and turned their focus else where. That is, of course, pure speculation.

Seeing as how PLANT is not going to be part of the game at launch, I'm guessing it's going to be released sometime in the future. But is it going to be part of a DLC? How do you feel about this?

Will we 'have to' buy these? Perhaps English is not your native language and so you are not aware that 'have to' means that we have no freedom of choice. Or, if you you understand what 'have to' means, then perhaps you are trying to foment outrage on these boards?

Simply put, we don't have to buy anything for Stellaris ever again if we are of that disposition. You will inevitably be able to get free races from the modding community although playing with them might exclude you from earning any achievements in that particular play-through. While it's not utterly impossible that we might get a plant race for free, I'm not expecting that to happen. Paradox is a business and I expect they'd like to be paid for their work. If you don't want to pay for it, nobody will force you to do it.

How do I feel about this? Absolutely delighted. Thanks for asking.

I wouldn't mind tossing a few bucks at a species DLC, depending on how much content it had vs the price. There will of course be mods as well.
