They're always working on the AI. We got some substantial AI improvements in 1.9.

There's still a long ways to go before it's at an ideal state, but the improvements are happening and are undeniable.

I like the way AI is handled now - free updates for everyone with each patch while the DLCs pay for it.

The problem with DLC locking content is you end up with multiple versions of the game that have to balanced with each other. Which is why it is fairly crucial that DLC features are modular and can be easily turned on and off. AI is something that can't be made modular, so I really hope it gets updated for everyone at the same time

Like said, AI is always being updated. Your reaching to high for it though, it won't ever get much better even if they spent 3 months on it. It's been this way since HOI1 , easy to take advantage of . Maybe in 20 more years technology will allow a smarter AI.

There's really nothing wrong with what Paradox does with the AI, every game has this problem made today. If your scripting events it doesn't always make sense , why, each game is different. How to plan for something half way there a playthrough that could never happen or it happens year 1 instead of year 4. Is the AI still relevant between the 2 years. My experience is no, world and battlefield changes and you can never cover everything that could happen and the AI itself has never been smart enough to handle it on its own.

I would also, however, maintaining TWO versions of the AI (one with DLC and one without) is never going to happen.

One area that actually does kinda deserve its own major update is Naval AI (especially the Pacific theater), since MtG was supposed to be the big naval update yet it did very little for making naval gameplay more enjoyable or worthwhile vs AI.

Despite being such a potentially major aspect of the game it remains barely worth investing in as part of a SP campaign since the AI simply doesn't know how to handle it competently and there is very little reward for carefully crafting your naval strategy. Which is a real injustice given how epic and interesting the Pacific war actually was.

If Naval combat and strategy vs AI was actually interesting and impactful, it would add a ton of new life into the game for various countries and definitely be a worthy subject for a focused update (along with various systems tweaks to naval gameplay which increase the impact and reward for focusing on it).

Maybe in 20 more years technology will allow a smarter AI.

I don't think so as it's not so much machine but rather human dependent. I mean writing well-working complex logics is extremely demanding on the human who designs them (not so much on the machine which runs them) and it is a huge effort.

As you can see some very old games like Master Of Magic or Master Of Orion had very good AI's running on weaker computers than today's standard by orders of magnitude.

Some of the AI template upgrade issues are relatively easily fixable so have good chances to see improvement with that just have to bombard the devs when the patching period of the new DLC will come around.

The factional supply calculations logic would be something totally new i think so probably that will come only with the land combat rework big DLC.
