I haven't played HOI3, so I'm not used to the NATO icons and I don't have a problem with the land models. However, watching WWW, the ship models seem really annoying, pretty much going around in circles and stuff. Will we have an option to turn off naval models but not land?

Well maybe they will fix it but I did see the ships floating right through peninsulas during WWW. That was annoying. Other than that, I like them but they are a bit too big. A 30% reduction in size might be nice. Maybe it's modable.

EDIT: I LOVE the planes flying around though. They are perfect.

Why does everyone hate the models so much??
Because, at a glance, its harder to see what they represent. An infantryman could represent an infantry division, a mountain division, a paratrooper division, a marine division or any number of other divisions. In contrast, a cross with a triangle below it is, unmistakably, a mountain division.

Personally, i quite like the models. I probably wont use them but that is just because its a WW2 game and it just doesn't feel right having giant people over counters in WW2 for me. If I'm not going to have giant men for this reason then why would i have ships? The same applies to planes. I also think they are quite ambiguous since they don't seem to really tell you anything - all they indicate is that there are some ships or some planes in this general area.

Why does everyone hate the models so much??

Its not everyone by any means its a vocal minority. The model packs for HoI3 sold very well apparently. Old school grognards ( of which i used to be one ) just have a hard time changing. In HoI 3 i actually used both and had models up close and counters zoomed out. Now imho the new counter system makes this unneccesary but old traditions die hard.

Yeah, would be useful to be able to shrink them a little or toggle them on and off. Same with aircraft, and, come to think of it, actually land units, too.

I don't mind the 3D models, or "flashy graphics", but when they get in the way of usability, it'd be nice to toggle them on and off. Like when I can't read the name of a province in EU4 because a 3D model is in the way, or when EU4 has that move arrow that slowly fills up to show how far a unit has moved, so that I have to wait a second to know how far an army is from reaching a province.

Easy fix: tie keyboard keys to toggling certain models. Let me hit a key to hide land units, read that province name, and hit the key again to turn them on. Saves me a lot of time.
