maybe for game balancing, but i wonder why china is uncivilized.
Because it was in no way ready for an industrial revolution. Civilized in Victoria does not mean "has a long history and many interesting traditions".

EDIT: On the positive side, if Victoria is banned in China, it probably will have close to zero effect on sales as Paradox does not earn money from the Chinese pirate industry anyhow.

Maybe this isn't the apropriate place for this discussion, but wonder if the banning will effect future paradox games? They've left out swastikas and all nazi references because it's illegal in germany, and they've made note to avoid certain controversial subjects to not attract the wrath of lobby and activist groups. Will they also humour China? Or is it not a big enough market for them to care?

China is interesting market only for goods that cannot be pirated ;) Unfortunately, pc games are not of that kind...

I remember that long ago, a WW2 game Panzer General had some problems in France. I just hope, that people wil not start suiting game-developers...if you are crazy enough, you can easily find the reason
..for example: gaining prestige (thus bonus) for colonization, while it is considered to be destruction of traditional lifestile in africa (so tha game is celebrating white man superiority)..or pormoting religious intolerance in Crusader Kings (oh yes..go kill muslims)..

note: i do not agree of course...but i realize, that lots of people are *** enough to start such claims

Then "Uncivilized" and "Civilized" arent the proper word to describe this status... :p

Wasn't the reason China banned HOI was because Tibet was included as a separate nation? China said that this was counter to its view of history about Tibet.

China regarded Tibet as part of its territory during the 19th century, as well. So I'd expect Victoria to be banned for much the same reason.

I also expect that this thread will head for OT.

They also objected to the depiction of Taiwan as being under Japanese control*, the existence of Manchuko, and the depiction of western China as de facto independent of the government of Chiang Kai Shek - or something like that.

Basically, anything that does not show the territory that China claims now as part of China in 1936 appears to be against the Chinese Culture department's rules. Makes you wonder what they are taught in geography and history.

* The historical fact that China had ceded Taiwan to Japan in 1895 in the treaty of Shimonoseki and that Japan had direct control and ownership until Taiwan was lost in 1945 as a result of losing WWII appears to have been conveniently overlooked.

Hearts of Iron isn't distributed in China; it's merely pirated. So Paradox has absolutely no incentive to appease the government of the People's Republic.

They are proper for the time period of the game. It's a slur to our modern eyes, but it helps us understand the European point of view during the Victorian age.

So, your complaints are justified...but the game should remain the way it is, so that we have to think about these conflicts.

I was always wondering if someone would say somehthing about the whole uncivilized thing. It does strike me as slightly offense to those cultures that are considered uncivilezed. Can anyone tell me what an uncivilized person or culture is? Maybe unwesternized or something... lol...

Civilization is a measure of people, not of infrastructure.

Just thought I'd share those wise words.

To you, sure. To a guy living 150 years ago in England, not at all. Victoria tries to put you in the shoes of that English guy from yesteryear...

Screw that! I play as Japanese guy of yesteryear ;) That's one of the things I like about this game, I can kick western-colonialist ass.
