Will updates ruin my save games?

I was wondering about this, is it like in EU3 that when you update you can no longer play your old saves?

I have to play EU4 through Steam for some reason, and these are the update options I got there:

1. Always keep this game up to date

2. Only update this game when I launch it

3. High Priority - Always update this game before others

No option that says "don't update please"

So anyone knows anything about this?

Major patches often, though not always, break saves. However, you can switch to the last version of earlier major patches. Right click game in Steam -> properties -> betas. If you choose 1.7.3 it will stay in that version.

Alternatively, set Steam to only update the game when launching, and always run it directly without Steam running.

How do I set it to run directly without Steam running though? From what I can see I have to use Steam?

Run the executable directly from wherever it's installed? (I have no idea where that's by default on Windows.)

Steam features like multiplayer and ironman won't work, so in practice I recommend just running through Steam and switching to an earlier version if a patch breaks something.

it will not run without steam runing, literally.

it says it can not operate without steam. I know because my internet was down, and i couldnt play ((((((

i used the executable in my steam library...
