I'm playing as Burgandy and I'm the HRE emperor. Lithuania took a bunch of provinces from the TO, including Osel:
willitdefect.png

At some point later, I got the event that notified me that they had decided to give up the territory - I could take it, or cede it to the TO. Stupidly, I took the territory. The trouble is, I don't want the territory. Almost immediately, some Estonian patriot rebels walked onto and occupied it, and I just let them, but the territory has been occupied for like 10 years now and it just won't defect away! It looks like the TO lost their core on the territory when I took it via that event. Will it ever defect away? Right now I can't even give it away - nobody will take it from me!

No, because the TO doesn't have Estonian culture. There isn't an Estonian nation in the game, so they are doomed to stay there forever, unless a country in their culture group, (Finland, for example), shows up.

Great, so I'm stuck with the province? It's a member of the HRE and I can't even remove it from the HRE since I'm in the HRE! Nobody will take this province off my hands.

If they don't want to buy it can't you DOW the and simply let them take t?
Good idea. I might have tried that earlier, but now I'm using the Imperial Ban to capture Livland and other HRE provinces in that area (for more Imperial Authority), so I might just build up a few provinces in that area and leave some troops there instead of abandoning it. We're only a couple of decades away from coring on Osel anyway and once I get the HRE formed, we're looking for a massive conquest which should mean that owning those provinces just helps us have as much land as possible.

Bloody annoying this kind of thing. If playing Scandinavia, I always want to give away Iceland because it is useless land and is always the first thing that war opponents take from me thus ruining my war score. Trouble is, I never have trouble selling Orkney, nobody ever wants to even take the Icelandic regions for free either

They can but it's a pain without Same culture. You have to revolt their other provinces by 51% with black stripes. The following month it will be either release a nation or province annexes to same culture group or same culture neighbor who provoked the revolt.

If you want to lose it, clear the rebels and sell it. To the TO or someone else in the region. If necessary for no money.

And Iceland is great if you ever want to colonize.

The colonies near Iceland are generally pretty awful. You're better off taking the Azores or just waiting to grab natives.

Agree with this completely.

As an update though, if you want to get rid of Iceland are already Scandinavia you can let them rebel and two years later Norway forms :)

Iceland is good for fast hopping to Canada before anyone else can even from Azores it's closer to Greenland and Eastern Canada. Also, by not stationing any troops their and during war the CPU will always try to land grab it. This can help in 3 ways 1- You can destroy their navy and/or invading troops; 2- Depletes their manpower; and 3-giveds them War Exhaustion upon lose. They'll always go to provinces with no risk for warscore. Finland is like Georgia, a big Gateway to keep the Russians at bay..especially their navy. Russian troops cannot swarm Finland by the mass becaues low supply limit and high attrition rates and it's even more worse if you keep a Merc there to Scourge the land

While I agree that Azores gives you access to good colonies faster, they're pretty hard to get as many of the more eastern (and especially northern) nations. If you get Iceland in the first 10-20 years, you can easily start colonizing ones it cores, thus making it relatively good if you want to colonize as much as possible. Just attacking natives as soon as possible would usually be the best strategy for most nations, but could be considered as cheesy.

No they aren't. Let Portugal take them as per their mission, declare war on Portugal, and seize the colony.

If you get Iceland in the first 10-20 years, you can easily start colonizing ones it cores, thus making it relatively good if you want to colonize as much as possible.
Iceland gives you access to awful gross colonies which no self-respecting colonizer should take unless they're hugely desperate (not a position you are in in the first 60 years of the game...). Unless you have some roleplaying reason to colonize that stuff (such as trying to own every province in the world), it's just bad and should be avoided.

Just attacking natives as soon as possible would usually be the best strategy for most nations, but could be considered as cheesy.
How is attacking natives cheese? Is any effective strategy synonymous with cheese now?

Nobody says you have to colonize Canada. If you don't want it, you can just go for the NA East Coast. Portugal usually takes some time to get the Azores and I think you can't conquer it unless you have already QftNW. In some cases, Portugal may also end up with stronger allies than you can fight right away (which might happen to Denmark/Norway as well, yeah).
Attacking natives isn't cheesy. Rushing QftNW and conquering stuff in America to have it core in 1470-80, giving you immediate colonizing range of basically anything you want in America could be considered that way.

If you're at war with someone you can move into their unexplored land provinces. Since you already start with the seazone surrounding the Azores explored, you can invade it immediately after Portugal colonizes it.
