For 2 months I've been away without EU3. Comming back from under the sun I see the game unchanged. No patch, not even a patch release date or a statement "We're workng on it".
Will there be another one?
I mean the stubborn AI needs to be fixed at first place and there are many other bugs which need the attention of Paradox crew

I'm not sure if there will be a 1.4...however, Paradox is hard at work on the 2.1 patch for Napoleon's Ambition, and it's well worth the money to upgrade.

There is, over at the Golden Hats forum ;)

Johan however said that this can be shared:

We have rewritten parts of the underlying colonial system.

First of all we've impemented the concept of colonial range and maximum range. Colonial range is a factor which is country specific, and depends primarily on the naval technology a country has. The Quest for the New World idea increases the colonial range with 50%. Maximum range is calculated from the closest unblockaded city you own and control. To be able to colonise a coastal province you will need to have your colonial range less than the maximum range to that province.

Secondly, for inland colonisation, you need to be adjacent to a city you own, not merely a colony. If you are colonising a province that would be adjacent to a province that is in a contigiously owned and controlled all the way back to your capital, as the Siberian Corridor for Russia, then you do not need to trace range to the closest port but can colonise.

Thirdly, the AI will no longer explore much further than it can colonise at this point in time.

What impacts does that give?

A) Unless you got ports at the Atlantic AND the qftnw you will not reach the americas until much later.
B) To reach India and the East Indies, you need ports and cities on the way.

This creates a much more historical feel to the colonial system.

In all likelyhood, no. Paradox has in the past tended to not patch up the un-expanded games. This could of course change, and I don't think I've seen anything about them not patching EU3 vanilla, but I very much doubt it. Grab NA and you get lots of fixes + future patches :)

Can anyone say how this is working? I don't really see how it changes anything. If you can still reach the Americas from Europe with QFTNW then what does it do? And if you need one of the waypoint islands, then it's easy to block everyone but Portugal (who starts with one). In the east, grab South Africa, Mauritas, Diego Garcia and keep everyone out of the Far East forever (or until naval tech expands).

Seems to me the bigger problem is that many times the historical colonizers don't want to colonize. Castille hasn't taken QFTNW in my game and France did as their second NI. 80 years into the game and England has NA and I (Venice) have the Carribean and SA.

The impression I get is that in 1453 no country will be close enough to the Americas to colonize them. Instead, they'll have to settle for Africa! But as time passes and the "range" gets longer, Castille and Portugal will be close enough to the Americas to discover nearby places like Brazil or Cuba - and once they colonize those spots, will be able to colonize the rest. As more time passes, nearer countries like Brittany, Ireland, Britain and France will get the chance to colonize North America, and eventually every country will be able to colonize.

This does hurt Asian explorers, since the Pacific is so much larger than the Atlantic...at least, in real life. It probably won't hurt them in the game, actually.

Well, it seems to be a bit unfair to me toward EU3 owners. They bought the game in a good faith that it will be supported as other Paradox titles (an important buying decision today! I will never buy any Total War game in future due to the attrocious post-release support).

However, now they are forced to pay more to get the support they hoped for (let's not kid ourselves, NA is a patch + some features rather than an expansion pack). Therefore, some may feel quite disappointed, and I don't consider this practice to be entirely kosher from Paradox.

I agree with you partially for instance blizzard makes sure they patch both original and expansion versions of their games.

Then again I dont really believe NA is so expensive as to put it out of reach of many gamers.

Many games are far more expensive than EU3 yet give far less enjoyment(time wise). While it is true that NA isnt a true expansion along the lines of blizzard games it is better than expansions for other games.

the price tag also isnt excessive so I dont feel that paradox needs to patch vanilla.

Well, the main point is not how much you have to pay, but about the methods used to pull the money from your pocket.

True, Paradox is not the worst in this case, but games are routinely released broken and buggy, and after complaining, the publisher answers: "You got what you paid for." Sorry, but that's not true! I paid for a functional product!

There should be a clearly defined standard for this.

For example, in case of EU3, it should have been stated: "With this game, you get 3/4 years of support in the form of patches, after that, you must pay extra to continue getting the support." That would be fair! But it would also affect sales, undoubtedly.

Thats news to me that spent most of this year working on NA.

It has more features & development time than all patches for eu1, eu2, eu3, hoi1, hoi2 and doomsday together, and bigger than on some games we've done.

Eu3 was released fully functional without any major bugs. Any minor issues discovered, as well as lot of new features, were done during the largest amount of not exactly profitable development time we have ever spent on a project post-release.

We've never supported games after a new version was released. When eu2 came out, no more eu1 patches, etc...

No, there won't be an 1.4 for Eu3 with more new free features. Feel free to start hating us for it, but it is a policy we've had since we released our first game.

Well, hate is a strong word, frustration is maybe more precise. Thank you for your answer, I guess from your point of view, it makes no sense to dedicate effort into that "unprofitable development time". I apologize, if what I wrote was too harsh. I value your effort, otherwise I would not buy your products.

Nah, your post was not too harsh.

Some effort should always be into "unprofitable development time", for multiple reasons, but there are limits since most employees tend to want salaries to pay for food and rent with in the long run.

England is close enough if they pick QftNW. But it will take some time because they need to get a city there before they can colonize larger parts. The new colonizing system is great and makes it a bit harder for the Ai and the player to get a large emprie before evne Columbus histroically reach the new world. With this new feature QftNW is really important for thoose who want to create a large empire. 50% longer range makes it a great idea even later in game.

No, there won't be an 1.4 for Eu3 with more new free features. Feel free to start hating us for it, but it is a policy we've had since we released our first game.

Johan, I LIKE your style. A lot.
