I have already raised this question in another thread, IMO there should be "freie reichsstädte" as they played an important role.
Yes let's make it possible to grant city privilegies so you could create free citys in newly conquered territory that lies far from you core country.

The Lombard league was also basically free cities with political ties to one another, with Milan being the most dominant.
And the HREmperor was always fighting them over something or other trying to subjugate them.
If you get elected Holy Roman Emperor, you should then be able to demand tributes from the Reichsstädte. If they refuse, you get a casus belli and can try to wrest the tributes out of them by force.
That's how it should play. BTW, what about secular holdings of the church? I want there to be lots of rivalry between the pope and the secular ruler over who gets to appoint bishops and abbots etc.

Will the king/duke that controls the papacy get to control all church states (Salzburg, Mainz and Bremen etc)?
First, a crusade must christianize the Wendisch coast (Mecklenburg, Pommerania, Pomerellen) before the Hansa is meaningful...

There won't be very many in the beginning of the game since the great schism hadn't really started though
It would be fun to try and create the Hanseatic League in the course of play as one of the Northern lands.

As the Hanseatic League had a huge influence in Northern Europe it should be implemented. How I don't know as I we haven't heard of the game mechanics yet.
Yes, I agree, but the Hanse is geographically placed at the wendisch coast line. This coast was in slavic (heathen) hands at 1066.
Maybe the Hansa creation should be a function of crusades in thea area?...
The "capital" of the Hansa was in Lübeck, definitely not in Slavic lands. However I don't know how it should be created in the game, but it definitely should. Again, becuase of lack of knowledge in the game mechanics I can't come with suggestions.
Maybe as you have in EU the 'Create vassal' button, you could have a 'Create free city' button
